I have such fond memories of this game. I got it when it came out on the SNES and it was one of my favourites. This was also the game that got my mum into games. She bought us the Nintendo but she never paid much attention I remember, until we got this one and she kept saying "oh that looks fun, I like the music", so we showed her how to play it, and to this day she still plays games. How many people can say that their mum can beat them at Age of Empires 2? I've got this to thank for that.
I like how Raphael the Raven just has gravity control as a power and never uses it again after getting to the moon. He really gave 100% for that fight.

This game really did have some of the most unique and diverse enemies bosses in any Nintendo game. Including some that you don't find in most other games (such as The Potted Ghost and Sluggy the Unshaven). Don't get me wrong, I love the Super Mario series, but fighting Koopalings all the damn time got kinda old fast. Raphael the Raven and Baby Bowser were some of the most fun boss battles!
I love all the yoshi's island bosses, such a super creativity in all them, when Yoshi was fighting tap tap, I kinda felt sorry for him when he was drowning in the lava
11:25 what's sad is that it's officially implied that Sluggy doesn't mean any harm and actually slithers forward because he's happy to see you and wants to give you a hug, but you have to break his heart since he'll end up accidentally pushing you off the stage if you don't. Poor Sluggy :( Edit: okay I can’t actually remember where I got this from and also the manual implies Sluggy wants to leave Yoshi out in the cold, so I’m not sure now
My headcanon is that Sluggy realized the situation they were both put under and that he forgives Yoshi for having to do what he did. He still wishes to be friends.
This game was so ahead of its time. The backgrounds, the art, the mechanics and most of all the fun/play-ability. Just an amazing game. I am loading up my SNES Classic right not. I also LOVE how Kamek talks both sounds and what he says. I forgot how most of the shit he says is so witty.
Of all the entrances of the bosses when they changed, Navel Piranha had the best one. Especially with the way they gave it the full boss music to time as it came in.

Looking back, this game was overlooked because PlayStation and 64 were looming over the horizon. Seeing it now, it makes me feel like a kid again. It taps into this childlike wonder that many modern/adult games sadly lack.
The other boss battle theme is better imo (castle, not fort, though the fort theme is so silly and cheerful that it somehow sounds so great too). It's a bit more fast-paced and energetic (especially with the extended intro when fighting Naval Piranha and Raphael the Raven) and really highlights the heightened anxiety during those boss battles. But both themes are some of the best of that era for sure!

One thing I wished the original Yoshi's Island did was change which Yoshi fought the bosses. It was always Yellow Yoshi fighting the mid-boss, with Blue Yoshi doing the World Bosses, except for Green Yoshi, who fought Baby Bowser.

I like how all the mid bosses have a weird gimmick to them in order to defeat them and it's not even hard. Then there's the final boss that threatens you directly with ways you suddenly hurt you.
I didn't realize how creative this game's bosses were when I first played it 30 years ago. Actually, I think even then I realized how creative it was fighting the inside of the frog. I remember the commercial called the technology in the game "morphmation" that caused the great growing and shrinking effects. I think it had a FX2 chip that other SNES games used as a selling point.
If you manage to hit the piranha plant with an egg without moving any closer to it, you can actually skip fighting navel piranha and move on to the next world.
It’s so cool how naval piranha plant and Raphael the raven get their own extended boss music to help add suspense. Such a neat little touch
I imagine an enhanced Zeus Guy boss having that same feel.

The bosses in this game were all rather easy (when I was _8_ I only remember dying to giant Bowser from the pits), but they are also all very fun.

One thing I wished the original Yoshi's Island did was change which Yoshi fought the bosses. It was always Yellow Yoshi fighting the mid-boss, with Blue Yoshi doing the World Bosses, except for Green Yoshi, who fought Baby Bowser.

I like how all the mid bosses have a weird gimmick to them in order to defeat them and it's not even hard. Then there's the final boss that threatens you directly with ways you suddenly hurt you.

I didn't realize how creative this game's bosses were when I first played it 30 years ago. Actually, I think even then I realized how creative it was fighting the inside of the frog. I remember the commercial called the technology in the game "morphmation" that caused the great growing and shrinking effects. I think it had a FX2 chip that other SNES games used as a selling point.
