Thanks Dan , just found your channel and as a beginner I find your explanations very easy to understand. My question is I have a 5WT rod & use A 5WT Line, fish mainly trout , what size leaders & tippets should I be using ? Thanks and have a lot of catching up to do , watching your videos
@@johnsamothrakis4621 awesome - I’m very happy you discovered my channel! Thank you for that support. I use generally 4X 9’ tapered leaders year round. It’s strong enough to handle the bigger fish and light in diameter so as not to spook the fish. Hope that helps!
That’s awesome and thank you for the comments! I’m glad you found it helpful - one of the biggest challenges since starting my channel is just that - discoverability. Common UA-cam - give me a hand! :)). Seriously though - I appreciate your support!
just brought a wildwater combo off amazon, 5/6 wt 9'. Never made a cast yet. I have watch several of your vid. Hoping to make my first cast this weekend.
Sweet!! Happy to hear that! Have patience when you first start out - remember to wait just a bit longer on your back cast before bringing it forward - nice easy cadence. You got this! :))
Hey mate just getting started into fly fishing and I have just bought a 9ft 5wt rod and was wondering if all these leaders will suit that size fly line? I was also wondering if you ever use flouro carbon? Awesome video mate and cheers from Australia 🤙 stay safe
Awesome - welcome to the sport! Yes - you will regularly use 5x, 4x and 3x leaders and tippet - these sizes are ideal for trout and other small game fish. I have used fluorocarbon for salt water fishing...it doesn't have the same stretch, but great for toothy fish. I hope that helps - Cheers!
@@FlyFishDan Hi i just checked my Fulling Mill tapered leader is OX 12lb breaking strain at the butt end.I was looking into getting OX tippet for when i need to repair my Tippet. On the fulling mill website it says 1x Tippet is 12.21lb-5.5kg and OX Tippet is 13.14lb-5.96kg.Which of the 2 should I buy to repair my OX leader wud you know?
That’s actually a good point - yes, if you used the 5x all the way up to the thicker portion, you certainly could. The only challenge is if you go too far up and get into the thicker portion...you lose knot strength. Thick and thin line is tough to tie together securely - doesn’t seat right most of the time.
I do the same as you but some people say that you divide the size of the fly by 3 and that would be the size of the tippet. So if you had a size 12 fly you would use 4x. I just go by what size tippet fits in the fly.( because I'm lazy).
What size would you recommend for panfish or smaller trout? And what’s the difference between a tipper and leader? So new to the sport learning as much as I can thank you!!
@@Anthony-eg7pw the tippet size won’t effect casting - the length however will. I would use either a 4X 9 foot tapered leader (the taper helps the fly roll over during a cast) or a 3x 9 foot. Anything longer can be more challenging to cast. Welcome to the sport!! Good to have you here on the channel.
After all the years I've fly fishing, I've just gone with 5x, 4x and 3x....0x for bass. That has always worked well for me...if the line fits in the eye of the hook then you are good!
Hey Dan. Great videos. When nymphing, are you using this same set up (mono) or are using fluorocarbon leaders and tippet? Beginner here and wondering if I'll have more luck nymphing with a fluorocarbon setup.
Thank you! Typically when I’m nymphing - I use tapered monofilament leaders. Only in specialty cases, when I need a light fly to sink quickly or super toothy fish will I move to using fluorocarbon. Fluorocarbon doesn’t have the stretchability factor and knots can sometimes work loose. Hope that helps and welcome to the sport!
Tie a tippet ring on the end of the leader and then tie tippet to the tippet ring. That way when you have a bust off or need to replace your tippet, you are not shortening the leader with another knot.
I hope and pray your still reply to your comments I am new fly fisherman like I haven’t even got to use my rod yet but I can’t find the answer to my question I am buying stuff I’ll need for trout this year and I noticed my line I think it’s called tippet one side is big and the other side is little my weight floating line is 6 weight I need to know where to buy the tippet it at where it’s big on one side and small on the other I ordered some trout sos before I looked at this tippet it’s 6lb line I’m so confused thank you
I would look for tippet sizes: 5x, 4x and 3x (they come in rolls). What I believe you are describing are called a tapered leaders (fat on one end…smaller on the other). You’ll want to pick up 5x, 4x and 3x 9 foot long tapered leaders - regular monofilament will be just fine. I would Google your local fly shop, Bass pro and Cabela’s has them as well. Hope that helps!
@@FlyFishDan ok one more question can I tie them together like say a 4-3 and make it to where they fit on the fly or since my backing is 6weight do I need a three or does it matter I have all dry flys yes tapered leaders I think it’s what it’s called it’s the clear line I have fished for many year but vary new to fly fishing I live in no where’sville No local fly fishers are here and is RS a good brand and btw you got a new sub thank you once again
Yes, you can tie them together. Typically, you would tie on 4x to 3x...or 5x on 4x...when tying on tippet, you should always size down. Hope that helps! Cheers!
Is there any reason why I wouldn't just go get for a roll of fishing leader and use that as my tippit since it's cheaper than paying $20 for a roll of 5x Rio fluoro tippet for example? The price likely only makes a difference if you're fishing a lot I guess.
Often times it’s the diameter of the line that makes a difference when trying to tie on flies. Typically the cheaper fishing leader is a lot thicker for the same pound rating.
good information Dan...thanks
You are most welcome! Hopefully you can get out and fish this extended weekend - cheers!

Couldn’t you tie 3x tippet to the 5x leader as long as you cut up to the matching diameter on the leader?
