This was the second best opera I ever saw. I feel so privileged to have seen David Hobson in Melbourne's 1993 La Boheme - that's when his voice was at it's apex.
I never tire of watching this scene. It is brilliant theatre. Puccini and his librettists at their best.The setting dosen't matter too much- it could be set on Mars and it would still be good.The tenor in this one is perhaps a bit shrill but I'm being "picky"
Non capisco la mania di alcuni Registi di voler ambientare alcune opere in epoca moderna, è inevitabile che fanno perdere quel sapore dato dall'autore. Niente da dire sulle voci e sull'interpretazione, sulla scenografia ho fortissime perplessità
sono del parere che quando un lavoro come questo viene creato è perchè ambientato in un'epoca precisa e anche i dialoghi sono fatti per quest'epoca. Nel 1950 già non si usava più un linguaggio come quello di Bohéme; comunque ribadisco che queste ambientazioni fuori tempo sono ridicole e senza senso, create più per stupire che per altri scopi e in ogni caso tendono a sminuire la vera essenza del lavoro, sarebbe come far mangiare gli spaghetti in un film ambientato nell'antica Roma.

Beautiful, youthful rendition. The modern setting in this performance "works" All the performers are equal vocally. Very shrewd casting and direction.

If you want to introduce opera to young people, this production of La Boheme is a good place to start.

I agree you can go to far in modernising a classic but I think this version works very well,after all to some people the 1950's are ancient times!
