This was extremely difficult for a Tuesday, well done for persevering through it.

"He was hauled up in front of the judge" .. common expression.

As someone trying to get into crosswords, it was really nice watching this! I had no chance finishing the whole thing, so it was a lot more fun when comparing with your thoughts as well

We've hung a bell on a string from the doorknob in the area where my dog lives, so that she can get our attention if she wants to go out. One of my friends, upon hearing the clatter from upstairs, said "I can't remember your dog's name." So I added, "But her face rings a bell."

I had the same thing at my last house. I swear it trained me better than it trained him. By the time I realized the bell rang, I was already up and halfway to the door.

Eartha Kitt had a very sultry voice; she sang the Christmas song "Santa Baby."

obviously everybody thinks differently and what works for me might not for you, but if you’re willing to branch out a little bit in terms of strategy, my usual is to go through every single clue, filling in what i know and skipping what i don’t (you can press tab to advance through clues in order which helps immensely, it’ll also go from across to down for you) and using intersecting words to confirm them (i.e. if a certain down fits with 2 acrosses that are already filled then i would assume those acrosses are right) and then from there i start with your strategy of taking it in basically a 3x3 grid of mini crosswords, but with a number of almost certainly correct words seeded throughout the puzzle, it makes life a lot easier.

Ignoring the crossing clues just doesn't sit right with me. Once you get a word, it makes sense to use that information to fill in the surrounding area, rather than completely ignoring it and going to a different part of the puzzle. Those clues will still be there when I get around to them, and it's not like a clue on the bottom right will help me find the answers to the clues on the top left.

This was hard. The top left corner was super difficult. I knew Eartha (if you don't know Eartha Kitt, you don't know jazz). But I didn't know a random old Republican politician (and I don't want to) but there's a city in California's Central Valley with the same name.
At the one-hour mark, I had to use checks.
But Cher is a classic though, and that corner was not that hard.

Interesting. You misread 1A at least three times. 0:16 2:55 and 23:55 . "like" was not in the clue.

I think word insertion/deletion or misreading is very common, it's just most people don't record themselves doing it and have others scrutinize.
