  • The MultiMachine is a Do It Yourself machine tool set designed for use in the developing world. Able to be built from basic materials available worldwide, and designed to serve as a lathe and milling machine, the MultiMachine and related projects (including the Concrete Lathe) can help an artisan build and repair agricultural equipment or even serve as the backbone of a small factory. This video accompanies the written (open source) instructions for building a MultiMachine.
The project is open source, as are others from Pat Delany and his MultiMachine Working Group. For more about the open source machine tools project, please go to www.opensourcemachinetools.com

I know this video is old, but I wanted to say thank you very much for providing it. I can tell that a lot of hard work and thought went into planning and building this machine. A traditional lathe is way out of my reach financially, but an old engine block and some scrap steel cirtainly is not. This video is exactly what I've been looking for. Thanks very much 👍

"Easy to build! - note: your definition of easy may vary". In all seriousness though, kudos on the brilliant work and thank you for sharing it with the world. I may have a PhD but it isn't in engineering, machining or computer science so I feel extremely lost. I am still able to appreciate the amount of time and expertise that went into designing this machine. I am jealous.

You can tell the conventional thinkers in the comments, they are the ones that say it can't be done. Look up some of David Gingery's work. If you need a new idea, look at an old book. Substitute brains for money. You can get .001" tolerance with a file and sandpaper, I've done it. It was required in the school I went to.Ways on lathes and mills are routinely resurfaced using hand scraping. Granite surface plates are resurfaced on site, by hand.
All this take a LONG TIME. And patience, and brains enough to think unconventionally, to come up with solutions other than taking it to someone or buying something.
David Gingery wrote "If you don't want to do a project just write down the first dozen or so thoughts that come to your mind and you will have at least a half dozen good excuses."
Don't let conventional "wisdom" get in the way of doing something unconventional.

Interesting observing some potential methods also that can improve performance I'm thinking. Maybe heat treating some of the parts (I guess the grinder attachment got me wondering about if having a tight tolerance cross slide added), tapered head higher quality screws, using some rebar maybe and epoxy to fill in some of the hollow cavities?
Gives me an idea for a better bed to mount accurate ways, rack and mounts for lead screw, feed rod(s), etc. for the wood lathe I have since the head stock and spindle is heavy duty though the bed and ways are just ~1" steel rod. Interesting method to consider if ever get to that scale need. Neat, thanks... never ever though about using cast engine blocks or heads for anything else.

First of all cool video very interesting use of materials. Having said that this is not a machine you could build in the back woods of Africa and you will most defiantly need more skills to build this than a simple bicycle mechanic. Funny thing here is you need one of these machines to build one of these machines kinda catch 22 i think.
Best thing if you want a good lathe that has the potential to become a multi-machine is to build the Gingery model lathe. I would however beef up the unit just a little to allow for larger stock to be turned on it. Straight from the book i think it is a 6x14 or something along those lines. I beefed up mine to be a 9x20 and then poured lead into the voids in the bottom of the bed ways. Im not finished with mine yet but i believe with the extra added weight it will be a much better and more accurate machine.

Very interesting as far as ingenuity. Lot of thought went into this. I'm afraid to tell you tho, it definitely can't machine with any precision. One can see the wobble in the stock even after being machined. Precision machining requires precision equipment. A+ for ingenuity.

This may seem complicated but it really is not. If he had showed a full video showing the entire machine in operation it would have been easier to understand how everything works. Regardless if you were to attempt something similar you just have to be patient and look over everything until you figure it out eventually you will understand it and it will be so easy to you.

You are better off having an engine lathe and a metal planer which are the two basic machine tools that started the machine tool age and thus started the industrial age. The lathe is used to create a metal planer which in turn is used to create A BIGGER AND MORE PRECISE engine lathe which in turn is used to create A BIGGER AND MORE PRECISE metal planer and so forth and so on until they are of enormous sizes and at the same time were used to create the jigs, tool holders, positioners, aligners, extenders KNOWN AS MODULAR AND SCALABLE JIG EXTENDERS used to hold a much wider and longer and thicker and higher working block needed to be machined, bolt lockers, rulers, protractors, micrometers, and all kinds of machinists measuring devices, gadgets, instruments with preciion bolt lockers in them. From them came the vertical mill which is one of the few machine tools that can mechanically reproduce themselves. Then came the shapers, the millers, drill press, benders, stampers, grinders, drill-mill, the works!

Even as a skilled mechanic this seems like a lot of complicated hard thinking work. I could probably do it, but the whole 'low budget thing' goes out the window when you have to start factoring in using machine shops in the first place.

very ingenious setup but the precision is not there , usually, to machine to thou precision, the machine itself must be machined to 1/10 of a thou in general precision
Steel is not used in machine tool main framing because it spread instead dampen vibration as cast iron do successfully

    • @clanravencub
      @clanravencub 5 років тому +1

Jacques Poirier it uses proven WW2 era tech or concrete and steel to limit the vibrations. And car engines are machined to extreme tolerances, that's where the precision for this comes from

I really like this idea--I would try it, but see some obstacles. The problem with this presentation is a lack of clear plans, drawings, etc. An overall layout oif an example machine, with labeled parrts as you would see in any machine tool owners manual. There is none of this in any of the material presented her, u8nless I am missing something. (Yes I did download the PDF). There is no explanation of what each part does; for example, what is the exact function of the steel plate and slide assembly that apparently joins the two engine blocks? Equivalent to the vertical slide of a milling machine, I presume? It woould be easy to state this in the plans somewhere, a bit frustrating that a lot of explicit info is not given. This critique is given in the spirit of improvement, not condemnation...
