  • Declutter with me. If you need some decluttering inspiration/motivation, this video is for you. I am decluttering a few books, talking about why I am keeping the ones I'm keeping and how my whole "minimalism vs. book journey" went along...
    MINIMALISM WITH BOOKS
    The number of books in my life kept changing constantly over the last years. When we moved to our current apartment, I got rid of many of my books, but it has taken me a while, even though I started out as an extreme minimalist with zero books in my first apartment.
    I also think that books will always be my one exception (books and my old closet, which is very very practical) to extreme minimalism. I might just want one pair of pants or shoes, but books... Hm. No. The books are there for a reason and I am not decluttering all of my books.
    However, my kid put a lot of books in the shelf, so I wanted to give her some more space (and myself too). It got pretty messy and the I just needed to declutter the bookshelf. So I thought, why not film it, right? Because, hey... UA-cam! Here we go!
    DECLUTTER WITH ME
    This video is made so you can declutter with me. Maybe you want some motivation or "company" :-) Comment below, if you watched this while decluttering, and how it went! Love to hear all about it.
    If you'd like more minimalism tips / decluttering tips and inspiration, you can follow my channel. I am making a lot of minimalism and extreme minimalism videos.

    I really enjoyed this video. I am not a minimalist or aim to be one, but I am decluttering and wondering what I should do with my books, I have over fourhundred of them, it's the hardest for me to declutter, but this gave me some inspiration ;D

      Nice to hear that. Yes, books are really the hardest... Right after memorabilia. It helps me to think about what the exact value of a book is to me. Why I like to look at it or have it at hand.

    This video is fantastic. It is exactly what I needed, and how I think, and almost the same book topics I’m interested in. You started out with the same amount of books I have and minimized down to the goal I have. And your explanations of why you like your books sound like something I would say. Thank you for this video. We’re book twins! 😂❤

    Undine ~ thank you for sharing your enthusiasm and love for your books. It felt like I was sitting with you and I could feel the positive feelings reading them brought you. Positive feelings are so important during this time. It is good to review our items but remember not to be hard on ourselves for ‘keeping’ :-)
    You reminded me of visiting Hannibal, Missouri US as a child. Mark Twain grew up there and the fun we had seeing places mentioned in the book. 📚🌱

    wow, you have a lot of books! I have only several books that I love so much that I want to carry them with me when I move - The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, for example. All the rest I gave away and gifted (books are expensive, so it's a good gift I think). No I buy e-books and read them from my phone - I know, I'm a monster, but I really don't mind the small screen :)

    No e-mail address? Heh! We’re disappointed. As for books we’re completely with you as far as books are concerned. They are very important to have and as you say outside of minimalism. I am a serious bibliophile and much always limit myself as to collecting books. Not helped by our doing the tiny house thing at the moment. My wife and I would like an opportunity to write occasionally. Not often we come across a book lover in your age group. We only do UA-cam and e-mail though.

    I love the Marx and Lenin, I’m am a communist, I’m a minimalist my husband collects communist literature but we lend books to people and also reference them often. And they aren’t typically available at libraries or audio books. He loves his books so that is a compromise. I’d love to hear more about growing up in the GDR

    • @UndineAlmani
      @UndineAlmani  3 роки тому +3

      That is a very good point. I always enjoyed this aspect of my books as well. Being able to share them with others.
      Oh, the GDR.... I'm not sure that's a topic I can talk about so much... It is hard to talk about. I remember a lot, and it did not change so fast after the wall came down, so I have a lot of memories and images in my head from that time. The overall feel was fear though and being afraid of saying something wrong. Even as a kid, at least if you were not part of the mainstream, you'd be afraid. Just the idea of having neighbors spy on you is super creepy. And when it finally makes sense, as in if you are old enough to understand what that means, it is completely saddening and frustrating. The idea of not being able to leave a country also felt horrible. But there were also a lot of positive aspects. Friendships were deeper, things had to be repaired instead of thrown away, people were more creative in their everyday lives... Things like that ;-)

    I am such a book worm and truly feel joy from many of my books! Lol I have a dream of having my own home library, but I don’t have the space…
    I feel I probably could afford to donate many of them that are just good books but not a total “i loved it” book. How?!!!

    • @UndineAlmani
      @UndineAlmani  2 роки тому

      I find that if you want to sell books, doing it online with a resales service is the most convenient solution. If you want it more personal, you probably have to organize some sort of yard sale or go to a flea market. Either way, it's more work. I find that this is only really possible in cities, where you have public book boxes/book-shelfs. Can't really recommend anything, I think it's very country-specific.

      @@kurlykaitlyn Well, then keep them. You could also weigh it against other things. But that works better when buying stuff, I find. As in "Would I rather go on a nice vacation than owning this?" It doesn't have to be realistic, just a reminder of how some things have permanent value (like unique memories) and others don't. For me, after having read a book, it's really more of an intellectual show-off value. Except the textbooks. Those are the reminders of all the long nights I have studied and I will not give them away.

    Catcher in the Rye, one of the greatest novels of the 20th century. Great Gatsby being the greatest of them all. What is it about Herman Hesse that seems to appeal almost exclusively to teenage girls! Didn’t k ow you were Jewish, great news. Hope husband and child are doing well and haven’t been de-cluttered! You needed to be tougher on the book declutter, old textbooks, come on now. We only do e-mail and UA-cam, we’d love to correspond if you have an e-mail address, and if you’re interested of course.

      Maybe I'll do another round when we move again. But tbh it does not change anything. To reduce things just for the sake of reducing is not me. It has to add some value. Right now, I only have this bookshelf. And it would look incredibly stupid without books in it. Also: my textbooks are not old and I still need them. I'm 100% unwilling to use an electricity-dependent little piece of technology to read huge PDF files. 98% of my books are completely unavailable on a reader. It just doesn't make any sense ;-)
      Great Gatsby is also one of my favorites. I think, to read Hesse you just need to be really young and probably also drunk. It's all very romantic.
      No one got decluttered. Also: Better not assume ppl's religion based on 1 book in their bookshelf. Also got a Quran and Bible (ok I actually decluttered the latter...). ;-D
