It is not as simple as changing row spacing alone. Yes the correct hybrid is critical. Leafs that point upright do well for me. I wish that seed companies would add that to their description list. Also when you bump your population up 12% bump up your fertilizer 12% or more. Also on really good land I found that row spacing doesn't change much. Surprisingly the marginal land is where I found the biggest yield bump with narrow rows.

Thanks for the comment. I agree that row width has multiple facets that need addressed for success. I agree the leaf architecture is important as we increase seeding rates. It also allows heat to come out of the canopy in evenings. That's one problem of "umbrella" type leaf architectures.
As for fertility, we continue to monitor if higher pops need higher fertility. My hope is that it does not, but that's just me hoping to keep costs down. Moral of the story though is that we have to feed the entire crop.
As for soil type, I agree with your statement. My main ambition with narrow row corn has been on marginal soils. My thought was less plant to plant competition which would lead to less drought stress. The addition of "short" corn will be interesting to watch as it comes to the market.

Why do you feel like 20" rows at the same pop. as 30" did poorer? Seems like more room per plant would be benefitial.

Good question! At the PTI Farm we run the same study for several years to compare data and make sure results are consistent. In this case, later years showed the additional room provided by 20" rows was helpful. In 2020 and 2021, our 30" vs 20" Corn Study showed 20" rows at 36K population outperforming 30" rows at 36K by +2.7 Bu/A. in 2020 and +2.90 Bu/A. in 2021. Your local Precision Dealer can provide the full results for this and all the studies we run at PTI. Find them here bit.ly/3BQndxI
