Why didn’t he stay in Germany. The man went back to Russia after 5 months of recovery? He gets arrested as soon as his plane lands. Now he’s in an arctic prison for a 20 year prison term. "Humans"? They're not , there's not one human bone in their bodies.
It's "Polar Owl" named for the statue in the prison courtyard. To the north and west you have the Urals, to the east and south endless Taiga. and if you somehow manage to sneak to the North-East you end up at the Yamal peninsula an enormous boreal tundra washed by the Arctic Ocean. The nearest railway station is in the town of Labytnangi 36Km away on a dirt road, and I am pretty sure it's the only way to get to Kharp other than a direct helicopter flight. And yes the prison is beyond the Arctic Circle, the only place worse would be the Vorkuta prison mining colony in Komi, which used to be part of the GULAG system but it is closed nowadays... I think. Furthermore Polar Owl is not even the worst Russian prison, that distinction goes to Black Dolphin, near the border with Kazakhstan.
