Murder in Tralee, August 1579

  • On 1 August 1579 two senior English officials were killed in Tralee. These shocking murders caused huge outrage at the time. They were of great political significance and the fallout from them helped push the Earl of Desmond into rebellion. We know who did it - John of Desmond, brother of the Earl. What is more difficult is finding out why he did this. Furthermore, the disappearance of medieval Tralee is really striking . The dominant structures of early modern and medieval Tralee no longer exist: the Dominican Abbey, the castle, and even the house where the murders were carried out. Also long gone is the Earldom of Desmond. All obliterated. While it is natural that political dynasties rise and fall, such a blatant disappearance of all traces of a long historical period is remarkable.

Yes, very unusual for so much fabric from the past to have been so comprehensively swept away which is a great shame.

It really is. It is depressing that a medieval town could be so totally removed

Thanks my friend. I must do so... and the Butlers of course. (There are - or were - Kerry Butlers. Not sure of the details, but they were in South Kerry in the 19th century, maybe before. )

@@ruadhbutler9143 yes there. I think a Butler invented Waterville, probably due to the fishing, but also in Portmagee there is a large mansion which belonged to Butlers

Surprised Varadkar hasn't tried to reopen the investigation into the killings under some sort of anti- foreigner crime.

Ive been to every town in Ireland especially towns with history Tralee is a fine big town with loads to do ill just list a few for you for starters the local town park is called the green a huge town park wirh the remains of an ols castle beautiful park with loads of different roses statues lovely water fountain with the names of every rose that enrered the famous rose of tralee this town park is well worth a visit one of the nicest park in the country there is there are 4 parks in tralee another park is called the lakelands where you have a lake with boats and big plastic balls for kids to climb into and have fun on the lake and and a fantastic cafe beside the lake wirh load of stuff in the lakelands for families and kid's then you have pearse park axross from the big town park a small park but very nice and then you have the canal it goes on for around 2 and a half miles fantastic place for a run or walk and half way along the canal you can see blenerville windwill the oldest on the west coast of ireland you also have the greenway from tralee town center all the way back to fenir Harbour beautiful walk fenit a few miles from tralee is a port village with a long peir to do some fishing and theres a huge statue of st Brendan pointing towards America across the atlantic a fantastic view of the atlantic ocean then a few miles outside tralee on the dingle road you come to a little village called stradvally where you have glountanassic there are 2 lakes surrounded by wooded mountains with boats for fishing on the lakes well worth a visit from the centre of tralee its surrounded with beautiful beaches on either side of the town one called banna the other called shore acre sandy beaches as you drive along the canal road you have a fantastic view of tralee bay with mountains and beautiful views of the bay also on tralee bay you have a lot of water sports going right back to fenit peir and 2 miles outside tralee you have ballyseede Castle hotel one of a couple of castle hotels in the country there's loads of family things to do there the Acau dome an indoor swimming pool with huge slides for kids there are two rivers wich flow trough tralee with walks along both rivers really nice just outside the town you have a huge shopping centre called manor park retail centre with all the big name brands also tralee town it self is one of the nicest towns ive seen in ireland lovely Georgian streets all paved and very fiew shops empty and full of cafes pubs and big name shops so ya i can say with truth tralee is far one of the nicest towns ive seen in ireland yes it has a reputation of been a rough town but whar big town hasent tralee has a lot going for it and why it dosent show case the canals and mountains lakes parks i dont no but surely if they dud they would bring in lots more tourists i also found that its far more cheaper than killarney and the town it self is far nicer than killarney killarney is a smaller town with around 3 or 4 streets its your bang avarage irish town where the prices are double what you pay in tralee example a coffee and toastie is 15 euros while the same food in tralee is only 6 euros but also the price of hotels in killarney are crazy but in tralee its half the price theres nor much to do in killarney unles you want to have a ride around
the park in killarney on a horse and cart but again the price is ridiculous a small fortune and also in killarney the price of a pint is the highest ive seen in my travels all over ireland and one thing i diddent like while staying in killarney was the way they talked about tralee and north kerry every bar and hotel owner had nothing nice to say about tralee and north kerry saying to us when we told them we were going to see tralee and north kerry they told us not to go near tralee saying its full of crime and drugs and very rough and ugly but i like to make my own mind up about a place and in all honesty Tralee was a far bigger better shops better cafes lpubs and beautiful parks canals and even freindly people more down to earth si in my opinion tralee is the place to visit especially wirh a young family lots more to do in every aspect and a lot lot cheaper where people genuinely want to talk to you and not like killarney where they just want you to spend your money one thing i forgot to say in north kerry not far from listowel and ballyduff theres a beautiful old round tower well worth a visit so i will say one more thing to the people over tourism in tralee is to show case what you have you have 3 gems that any other town in ireland would only dream of and there are the atlantic ocean the canals and the beautiful beaches you need to advertise these and let more people no what tralee has on its doorstep ill sum up by saying if you are thinking of going to kerry make sure you visit the capitol town Tralee and the north kerry way and you will be glad you did sorry for my spelling not the best thank you for reading my opinion on Tralee and north kerry so to the tourist board of kerry open your eyes and go visit tralee north kerry

Actually you didn't mention one of my favourite places in Tralee, the amazing secondhand bookshop on Rock Street!
