    Times when it's bad to ask for heals (a non-comprehensive list):
    - When they're dead
    - When you're dead
    - When you are either someplace or in a situation where you cannot be healed safely
    - If you're spamming it
    - If you are missing 5 hp and you can see that they are on a critical teammate
    - If they have just finished calling that they're being dove and you have no intention of peeling for them
    Times when it's good to ask for heals (a non-comprehensive list):
    - When you are on a different plane or are behind them (i.e. widowmaker or someone up a wall)
    - When you can see they are distracted by a non-critical teammate or the teamfight in general (or suspect they could be) and need heal
    - If you need a top-up and are not in the middle of a teamfight
    - You just realized you accidentally have taken literally all the aggro and will shortly be falling over
    - You are the other support or a self-healing hero and will need help because you are out of cooldowns/taking consistent damage that's preventing self heal etc when they may not expect it

      part of improving at overwatch is learning to slow down the game as you're playing it so you see opportunities to make plays and also see your mistakes as soon as you make them. this takes time to develop! and the only way it starts to happen is by getting in the habit of watching your vods because that's how you train yourself to understand your mistakes and then you'll start to see yourself making them in game. overwatch is a real commitment when you want to improve, so don't be discouraged! stuff takes time, and asking for help like you did by submitting your vod is the first step to learning to see your blind spots!

    The bigger problem I have, is that a LONE Genji or some other diver will go DEEP in my backline, COMPLETELY disrupt ALL FOUR of my team, and I'm wondering, am I supposed to keep holding the charging tank and three other enemies at bay, or am I supposed to run back and try to rescue them form ONE diver? Neither option seems to work....
    Sometimes it's the enemy tank even, which I can see is more dangerous, but it's a classic example of feeding. I figure I cut off the supports and my team will shred the overextended tank, but NO! The guy will wipe everyone out while hardly taking any damage! But if I turn my back on the enemy I will DEFINITELY get shredded instantly. What's the deal???

    • @jordyn.
      @jordyn. 7 місяців тому +7

      if you have cooldowns, sigma shield/grasp, dva defense matrix etc, along with having the healthpool to hold the enemy team off, do it. if you walk back to peel for the enemy diving your team, you are giving up all of that space that you were holding while turning your back to the enemy team, when your 2-3 teammates could've easily just dealt with the genji while you keep holding the space. it's situational, obviously as for instance if it's just a genji, it's probably fine, but if they for example use something like a blade then it could be worth peeling and trying to stun/deny them.

    • @shioramenrabbit
      @shioramenrabbit 7 місяців тому +13

      Too many variables to say. You might just think it's the one hero, but if they're getting the support of their team (both healing, bubbles, another DPS shooting their targets etc) it's essentially not a 1v4 it might be anything up to a 4v4 happening behind you. Unless you're running brawl, remember that the things impacting a won or lost teamfight don't geographicaly have to be located beside the diver. A classic example would be a Winston diving your backline with an Ana and/or Zen healing them at range, and say a genji not in but pressuring an off-angle behind you.
      It's like the pocketed hitscan conundrum where people are like "it's just a sojourn, it was a 1v1" but if they have a Mercy on them it's a 2v1. You should expect to lose that most of the time.
      Anyways, yeah it's tough. Sometimes you just fall over, but more consistently just don't feed, don't run back and leave yourself vulnerable (although do disengage if you're on a hero where you can do so easily), play conservatively but keep forward pressure, make yourself hard to kill long enough for your backline to deal with the problem. This goes into the bucket of why even tanks should always position with an eye to there being cover somewhere nearby

    • @DarthSpock1
      @DarthSpock1 7 місяців тому +1

      @@jordyn. Thanks for that. That's what I tended to think, just many times I do that, after hearing the Genji behind me, I then hear a death sound or two behind me and the line collapses right after. Just bad luck in those cases I guess! Switching to Winston/Rein and trying to keep the team closer helps, but not always! And the tank change usually has other consequences.
      This usually happens on defense playing Ramattra. I get in a comfy groove holding a point, few kills but the cart doesn't move, so I'm happy. Then that happens and breaks the stale mate I was maintaining, lather-rinse-repeat.

    • @Kahnthelongshot

      As a low rank support main, also keep in mind that in some cases that lone genji is a Smurf who lives for destroying metal backlines. Our mechanics aren't there yet, help if can lol. If you can't reasonable players like me understand.
      But you right. The other 9 times, we shld be able to handle lone flankers as long as they don't have a pocket somewhere in the cut.

    • @windstorm7686
      @windstorm7686 7 місяців тому +4

      Not immediately, let your supps cook. Most of the support line up can easily win a 1v1 against a genji. But as a tank you have to be aware of how they are faring and at the very least back up if they are getting disrupted as you say. You can't hold space without support so just reset, play closer to your backline, and turn quickly if you're gonna turn on a dive.

      it's always good to keep in mind that you can't control what your teammates do. I'm sure there are games where you are objectively being abandoned by your supports or the support who should primarily focus on you forgets you exist. I'm in diamond and plat lobbies and this still happens sometimes. this won't be every game but I'm sure this does happen from time to time, and you can't control whether it does happen. but you can control whether you give your supports the opportunity to keep you alive by always playing around cover. they might not always use that opportunity to actually keep you alive lol but you've done your part as a teammate by giving them the chance.
      and most supports WILL make the most of the opportunity you give them. nobody's perfect, of course, and they're in gold, too, but most of them are trying their best to help you. so by helping them help you, you are also giving yourself a better opportunity to get things done!

    At the expense of getting bullied off the internet, I wanted to ask a question that hopefully can get answered. Do you guys think having game sense/mechanical skill actually determines rank?
    Background: I have an account since OW 1 back in 2016, never been able to climb higher than Silver 3 on supp, or gold 4 on tank (usually bronze 1-2 for both). Just before season 9 started, after a 3 week losing streak, I did the unthinkable and I bought a diamond 4 supp account and haven't looked back. I know I've definitely learned a lot since 2016, from mechanics to game sense, but it never felt like it mattered at the lowest ranks. Not only did I do the stupid thing by buying an account, I also did it right before the hard reset in competitive. So I ended up testing my skills on both accounts- I felt I played the same way (played same characters, playstyle, same time of day, with similar amounts of stress levels coming from my life, etc.), but in my old account I was placed in Bronze 2, but in the bought account I was Diamond 2. Over the course of season 9, going between accounts I stayed in bronze on my 2016 account, and stayed in Diamond in the bought account. When I watch my games back to learn improvements, it seems to me my skills (as support, being versatile in kit/keeping people alive, as tank, making space/protecting supps) don't actually contribute to the game and that whether we win or lose is dependent on the rest of my team. Does this mean that I have to carry more in my bronze games to make a difference, or does this mean that ranked is not actually a measure of your skill? I hope emongg can answer this in a future video, but of course happy to hear y'alls comments too.

    • @Wulfereene
      @Wulfereene 7 місяців тому +4

      First, you need both to a degree. There are gm mains for every hero, you can rank up with mechanics, headshot everyone. Or with Game sense for example playing Winston or rein. But there are also players with great aim that don't rank high because they fail at game sense and when position and timing is off, you end up feeding when you don't group up and always play 1v5.
      About the two accounts, someone did the math and you need around 100 games to gain or lose a full rank, that means gold to plat for example. Very roughly speaking. So if you played both accounts for 300 games each, just one role, you might see them move closer together in rank. But there might be some truth to it, there was this streamer doing unranked to gm lifeweaver and he got stuck. Unranked to gm works when you are still in calibration and rise quickly. But when you have many losses and your rank settles, it seems that even a gm could not escape elo hell in short time at least. He made a new account and went gm there. It was all about not having too many losses. And life weaver is a hero that has limited carry power .
      The main question is, does one of your accounts have more fun games? Because i see bad games from bronze to masters, with people making really bad plays and mistakes. I don't care about ranking about because it doesn't get better. It's not more fun, not less toxic. Just more stressful when you always have to play top performance. Matchmaking tries to find balanced games so you should win half and lose half. It doesn't matter if silver or diamond, when you are at your rank you lose half of your games, statistically. Only question is if the matches feel better maybe because of more team play or communication.

    • @TheK126
      @TheK126 7 місяців тому +2

      Yeah I think at some point should consider what reason you play- sure feels good to have bragging rights that you’re a high rank, but if you’re not having fun (which it sounds like you want considering you’ve been playing since 2016) what’s the point? If you’re having fun while not cheating I think you should play whatever gives more fun. @wulfereene gives a good point that it takes a loooooooooooong time to rank up, so if you’re not spending days worth of trying to rank up, you’ll likely stay within the same rank with your history of playing aka 8 years vs 3 months serving as the basis of your rank

      @Wulfereene 7 місяців тому +3

      @@its-tinyavocado when a silver Support can hold himself in diamond, that is 3 tiers higher, over a longer period, that would indicate that rank is somewhat complicated. By the percentages how players are distributed, silver is below average, and diamond is strongly above. If old numbers still apply, gold was the majority of the player base and diamond would be roughly top 15% or so. If rank assesses skill, a silver player should slowly rank down. He won't lose all games, just more than half. But matchmaking and match randomness have more impact on short term data. You need to have hundreds of games to see your own statistical effect. Everyone had his 5 games win or loss streak. That doesn't mean much. The question is how many out of 300 or so do you win

      you're focusing on stats and not your impact. that's the problem. you're preventing yourself from even seeing the main issues because you're mistaking numbers for value.
      for example, we've all had that obnoxious dps player who's like "wtf are you guys doing, I got two!" but they fail to realize they got two when the rest of their team was back in spawn and thus, the enemy team still had the numbers advantage and the two picks didn't matter. that dps player is ignoring the overall picture.
      damage stats don't matter if, for instance, you ran it down mid trying to kill the enemy Orisa who never fell over while the enemy dps wiped out your backline. elims don't matter if you don't anchor point when you need to or help keep your team alive so there's enough people to capitalize on the elims you're getting.
      the team who captures the objectives and pushes cart - and prevents the enemy from doing those things - is the team who wins the game, not the team with the best stats. there MAY be correlation there in many games, but the good stats do not CAUSE the victory. completing the objectives does.
      I can't tell you what your biggest obstacles are, but I can say with absolute certainty that you're never going to give yourself an opportunity to identify those obstacles if you use stats as a metric of the value you're contributing.

      @@sethescope as tank, if I'm doing all that damage and getting all those kills, that means I'm right there up front and making space. Numbers don't tell the whole story sure but it does tell a lot of it.

      @@RantKid you don't have to believe me, but you will keep losing more than you think you should until you are willing to understand that you are both the problem and the solution. it's not easy to hold yourself accountable, but it's the only way to improve and eventually get to a higher rank.

    I think the orisa loss rate is probably due to "ok we're losing, I'll go orisa" thinking it's an "I win" button, but they still get rolled because they don't know how to play orisa or that orisa has been played so much people figured out how to counter her.

    • @sethescope
      @sethescope 7 місяців тому

      i won't lie and say swapping isn't more important on tank than it is on other roles because it's true. BUT. that doesn't mean you should be playing counter watch just because you're on tank. if you are fixating on the tank 1v1, you're missing so much of the bigger picture. it's not about swapping necessarily. it's about knowing how to play your chosen hero with the heroes you have on your team and against the heroes on the enemy team.
      for example, you can successfully play dva into zarya IF you understand (1) why zarya is good against dva on paper and (2) how to prevent the zarya from benefiting from that theoretical, on paper advantage.
      you can also swap to Winston, for example, if they go Zarya in response to your dva. that is absolutely a choice you can make and will sometimes be the right choice. but sometimes Winston will be the wrong choice against the other four people on the enemy team.
      in order to enjoy playing tank and also improve if that's what you're interested in doing, you have to see the bigger picture and understand strengths and weaknesses and you have to work on good decisionmaking

    As someone who's never really played a "ranked" video game in my life, or anything competitive, and just got into overwatch heavily... Season 9 is garbage for new players. I was in gold for a bit in season 8 and then season 9 hit and I slid right down to silver 4... i left it ONE time to silver 3 and then went right back to silver 4 and have not been able to budge since. I just wanted to hit gold 4 and I wasn't even good enough to do that. Also, there have just as many times when my positioning was pretty good and Im literally 3 feet from both supports but they only heal.. each other? Fricking Zen and Moira players need to stop playing as a DPS character, like okay I get it you're trigger happy, play dps if you want to get 20 elims in a game next time. To say healers aren't the problem at least 33% of the time has to be cap, but I see tons of people in the chat defending healers throughout this video. Healers are not infalliable. I've lost dozens of games simply because Mercy kept reviving me when A) the reason I died is because she refused to heal and only damage boosted, and B) I was actively trying to switch off my character and she kept reviving me 3, 4, sometimes 5 times in a row, therefore locking me down.

      I wouldn’t say blame it all on the support because as a gold 2 support which I shouldn’t be honestly smh trust me I get frustrated when I’m being the only healer but then when I’m getting dived on and focused I constantly have to switch to another character the dps or tank gets upset they aren’t getting heals but aren’t helping me….we cannot heal y’all when we’re getting dived on 🤷🏽‍♀️ sometimes like Emongg said there are people who have bad positioning and there are others who just focus support but if the supports are healing each other it’s possibly because they’re either 1. getting rolled on or 2. Having bad positioning and they’re getting heavily focused

      Lol.... diamond tank here.... I would 100% of the time prefer my mercy to damage boost a TON more than heal... also if you need that much healing your positing is terrible and you have zero idea where the health packs are.... figure out where the health packs are and literally pay around them.... if you have 2 supports heal botting and the enemy supports are doing damage your are literally fighting a 3 v 5

    • @Lappmogel
      @Lappmogel 7 місяців тому +1

      No shit you're supports are bad, they're in the same rank as you lol. Just one trick a tank with their own self sustain until you're in diamond or higher. Its that easy.
