So what do I think of the 'new 62MAS'? Well, apart from being nothing like the 62MAS I like it. But do I like it enough to tempt me away from the delights of Switzerland? Cheers, Jody

    Jody is a Horological Icon, Pure Class. His bespoke watch reviews are hand crafted, using the softest Tuscan leather, by skilled artisans. Five generations of my family can personally recommend Jody when it comes to reviews of affordable luxury timepieces. Anyway, that's enough from me. Let's flip the camera and go back to the studio 😁

    I have the SBDC055, which is the PADI version of this watch. This watch is slimmer and thinner than most of my other dive watches, so I thought perhaps it might look like a bit of a toy on my wrist, but....nope. It's awesome. Really, really comfortable and an absolutely gorgeous watch you won't regret buying.

    I have the SBDC051, been calling it my “modern mas”. Wear it in the summer on an Uncle Seiko waffle strap. Feel it has lots of wrist presence. Super legible, at my age that means something. Love your channel and reviewing format. Nice little dig wrt Philly reference

      I just dived in for the sbdc085. had it on wrist for 3 days only, still in the honeymoon period. no chapter ring mis~alignment, applied indices are fine without over spilled lume or uneven surface. it's looking great so far, this is my first proper seiko diver btw.
      I can totally see people find it expensive with the 6R. I had a cocktail with the 6R, absolutely hated it. hate feeling rotar rattling, inaccurate... you know the rest. BUT.... for some reasons this 6R doesnt have all those issues, muted rotar, couldnt feel it even when flick it on purpose and it's pretty accurate so far ~ +3sec per day.
      which makes me wonder, is the JDM version really far superior than others 🤔 sbdc085 is a japan only special edition. and dont ask how much I paid for it....🤦‍♂️

    I don't mind at all , the unsigned crown, in fact I love the simplicity of crowns and cases which are not covered with trademark engravings, other then the case back . This doesn't go for all watches ,some high-end brands just have the perfect trademark symbol for a crown . The case is just beautiful! To me a signed crown would just cheapen it , less is best w/ these classic renditions , no need for a signed crown, when the case screams classic SIEKOSHAAA....!

    Thanks Jody. I have one, bought secondhand in Japan for ¥38,000, so around AUD$400. Fortunately it had hardly been used. I use it for swimming and other activities (gardening !). It has had a few knocks but there are no scratches on it so it does seem to be tough. It keeps quite good time, maybe around a minute or two a month ! It is certainly a stunner to look at. My swimming colleagues are somewhat jealous. All the best.

    I have two of the fifty four homages that I know you put poop on. They're closer to the dimensions of the original than anything anyone even Seiko themselves have put out for us envious folk. Both run within 5secs a day plus or minus. My son bought a real 62mas that he lent to me for a couple of days before it went to the watchmaker. As far as I was concerned he could have left it as it was, apart from a service. But he's having it restored at a big price. Youth.... Anyway great channel Jody!

    I wish they didn't make the 62MAS reissue so damned expensive; I'd have loved one with a 6r15 at about the price of this watch. It's a gorgeous watch, but $6k is just way waaaaay too much money.

  • @HarryFlashmanVC
    @HarryFlashmanVC 2 роки тому +1

    OK, just bought one of these. How does it stand up vs Christopher Ward Trident, Oris and Longlines? I think it beats them all. The dial is similar to the Mk2 Trident but the case is so much more and the vintage feel gives class without over the top period idiosyncrasies like yoh get on the Oris 65 and the Yema Skin Diver (both lovely watches) this makes the Seiko just a bit more versatile.
    I think this is almost a perfect one watch collection. It's understated, classy, and just sits so bloody well on the wrist. My one was an absolute bargain at £480 with a strap code Oyster and a Strap code Jubilee included. It looks spectacular on the bracelets.
    I'm seriously thinking about cutting the collection down to this, my SKX, my Alpinist, my Elliott Brown Holton Professional and my G Shock and getting rid of a dozen others.
    If anyone wants a: Smiths Everest Expedition, a Speedbird III, a Hamilton Cooper, an Elliot Brown Bloxworth Chronograph, an Elliot Brown Canford, a Yes World Watch V7, let me know!

    which watch are you wearing in this video?

  • @LouisWinthorpe622
    @LouisWinthorpe622 5 років тому +11

    I do like mine and wear it often but I started thinking that it has loads of 'buts' and wondering whether to flip.
    I wish it was 39 or 40mm.
    I bought it cos, like, in the Watchuseek thread of the same name 'I liked that so I bought this instead'. Seiko could have easily made the 62mas reissue this price with a 6R15 movement, instead of making both watches. But doing it the way they did let them exploit the 'limited edition' cash cow, I suppose. Much more work must have gone into making these cases, than the SLA's, though (?). I wish people wouldn't encourage them by paying the grossly inflated prices for their limited editions.
    I would love a 62mas dial, hands and bezel insert on it (or just hands, at least) but it is far too expensive a watch to mod IMO. (Which is more a measure of one's level of disposable income, I suppose. If I was totally 'rolling in it', I would do it myself or get it done by somebody else).
    I keep wondering whether I should just have bought a Sharkey or JLM 62mas homage AND a turtle, samurai or monster, or put the money towards a Ball, combat sub or other low key, attainable grail.
    The depreciation of flipping one of these is going to be massive, thanks in part to that TGV review, I think. I'm sure I noticed the resale values on eBay taking a little nosedive soon after I saw it, actually. Which is sad. He's ok but I don't think he merits the level of adoration or influence he seems to receive (I could go on about that but not really the time or place).
    So I'm going to hang on to it and keep wearing it. Make it a permanent part of the collection / rotation, at least for the foreseeable future. It's just not a 100% decisive, forever, definite keeper keeper. Owning it niggles a bit, I have to say.
    I had plenty of time to write so I thought I would share my owners opinions with the group, ha.
    Your channel is one of my favourites on this subject.

    Cool vid. Subscribed. I own this watch but I sprung for the Seiko bracelet from the sbdc051. Two comments I have are first, I actually like an unsigned crown. I work with my hands daily and will get the crown blemished occasionally no matter how careful I am. It’s the only part of a watch I repeatedly hit. When it’s plain, it is easily polished. Second, Seiko bracelets have a wide range of price to go with their wide range of quality. While the 220$ one doesn’t quite compete with the bracelet on my GS Snowflake, it is IMO, a bracelet that is not only well worth the money but punches well above its weight. I own more expensive Swiss divers (1500$-3500$) that have bracelets ‘in the same class’. My opinion to be sure, but I have compared them extensively. Did it again while writing this comment because I’m neurotic. Btw, is it safe to wear that Celts shirt outside in philly?

    So I have owned Yema, Chris Ward Tridents, Longlines and Oris divers and I have just pulled the trigger on one of these.. why? Because whilst those are all excellent watches there is an element of 'laddering' I.e. even with Chris Ward who appear to have turned their backs on affordable value for people not especially bothered by brand. Laddering... the ladder to Submariner...
    Whereas personally, I love the relative anonymity of Seiko, that some are £50 and some £5k. Its a watch that isn't about knob waving.

    The anti-magnetic resistance is, like in all Seiko Prospex divers, the minimum ISO required 4800 A/m, or about 60 Gauss. That's the strength of a decent fridge-magnet. Not a Millgauss by any means...

      @@ricchrono5907 I'll try to keep it short: mobiles and (modern) laptops themselves are barely magnetic. It's the rare earth magnets in cases, handbags, laptop-lids etc. thata are culprits, as well as plugged-in chargers to some (low) degree. Magnetic strength, like gravity, is inversely proportional to distance squared. Keeping 1 meter distance from domestic appliances (for longer periods of time, no watch is magnetised instantly), should do the trick. The influences of magnetism are above all unpredictable. They are in most cases however cumulative over time. There is no way of telling a watch is magnetised just by looking at it. Heavily magnetised objects will attract compass needles. So if your watch is always north, best to have it degaussed. If you have a degausser (they can be cheap): movements should be degaussed separatley from the case. Degaussing them assembled is less efficient, but does no harm either. If you don't work around high voltages and powerlines all day, the chances of getting your watch magnetised are, with some caution, actually rather slim.

    Another great review Jody. Since I’m a Seikophile, as you say, I automatically have an affinity for it. However, I don’t know what the hell they’re doing with the hands. Those are essentially Samurai hands but with a long black tail added to both the hour AND the minute hand and for no good reason. The tail of the minute even obscures part of the hour hand when it sweeps over it. Major design fail if you ask me. The rest of it is beautiful though, but the lug to lug length is too long. I have no problem with diameter, but if you have below a 7” wrist, it’s getting harder to wear comfortably. And this is coming from someone who has a 6-1/2” wrist and has no problem wearing the current Samurai all day, everyday. But I don’t think this one would work for me unfortunately. BTW, I’ve never seen any Seiko movement with that kind of amplitude, and I have a couple 6R15 / NE15 movements myself. That’s crazy. Oh well, guess I’ll save my shekels for another SKX mod. 😁 Cheers.

    lacquered bezel, sapphire crystal? Buying this would feel like cheating without having to mod it to get those touches. Still I've gotta wonder how long before I'd rip it open, drop that dial and movement into another case, and then drop a different dial and movement into that case.
