  • Green Stuff World released a line of 24 paints called Dipping Inks. They're very close to what a contrast would be so I bought myself one with my own money so that I can give my honest opinion on it. I did a series of tests for different ways to use it to see how useful It'd be as a tool in my tool box, and break down how it stacks up in use and cost to the competition.

The idea behind this review seems to be based off a majorly fallacious assumption that I think is probably Army Painter's fault. Army Painter's speedpaints, are actually shockingly consistent in consistency across the line. Contrast, even before the line expanded and they added new "contrast" paints that don't behave at all like the previous ones (Bad Moon Yellow is fantastic for giving an all-over yellow with no darkening of the recesses in one coat over white), is a line of paints with a ton of variance from color to color in terms of thickness, coverage, flow, etc. It's hard to compare anything to contrast paints because they're a moving target.
All that to say, I think it's a bad idea to try to review the whole line of dipping inks off a single bottle without a ton of concurrence that they all behave similarly.
Hope that didn't come off too negative! I really like your videos, I just think this specific one has a major conceptual issue.

I also really liked the video and your balanced review. I agree with @brendan that it's hard to review the entire line if you only have one color. To add to this, based on other reviews I've watched of both GW contrast line and AP Speed Paints, it looks to me like these dipping inks are somewhere in between. They seem generally more consistent across the entire paint range than GW Contrast Paints (notable exceptions are Hulky Green and Misted Yellow which exhibit almost zero contrast effects) and less consistent than AP Speed Paints.
I will likely pick some of these up, especially the colors that I tend to use in 'bulk', like browns and darker colors in general.

Golden Rhino Games in the US carries the whole line. I ordered 10 bottles and the shipping was very fast

Thank you for this in depth review. I really do appreciate all the information you share with your viewers and how well you explain everything from your tutorials to your reviews.
The only critique I have for this video is two or three colors would have allowed for a more accurate review of their entire line up, especially since you did this review with a yellow color which we all know had a tendency to be on the weaker side.
Aside from that, it's still a very enlightening review.

Ya I probably should have thrown a couple more in my order, but I didn't even plan on doing this video in the first place oddly enough, I just wanted to try it for myself but then got a sudden spur of the moment desire to film it. So I tried to fairly review it based on the fact it was only one colour. I probably could have left out test number 1 in that case, so lesson learned.

@@PaintmanJourneying still enjoyed the review, not saying what you did was bad, just not totally conclusive. Maybe if you order more, you could revisit and do another review.

the real deciding factor will have to be whether they figured out how to do Red. just because their other red "inks" or washes are kinda bottom of the proverbial barrel. I do like a lot of their paints and auxiliaries, but red thus far has been their Achilles heel.

Where did you get that color chart behind you?
That is great idea for people trying to blend colors together. I tried going from payne's gray to a olive skin tone with a pinkish mid-tone in between and having a hard time of it.

I made it. Basically got a canvas from dollarama, primed it black and Grey, made a grid and mixed every color from my scale colour artist line together. I think at some point I might do another one with my jo Sonja paints, but ya just good old fashioned hard work got me that.

Wow I'm blind. I didn't see the "S" in GSW and thought this was about something GW related. Felt weird with the GSW bottle on the thumbnail.

Wow, the local prices here for GSW are expensive. The place which has them doesn't have a large collection, but the price is still 2.5x what it is on GSW's site.

That might have something to do with when they got them. There was a recent crash of the euro that put it more on par with the US dollar, but they may have payed that extra 40% when stocking it from conversion before that crash. Unless the local store you're talking about is euros...then I've got no explanation XD

Testing one color against other colors that aren't even close to the same color proves absolutely nothing, especially when one of those colors is one of the darkest in the contrast line while you're testing one of the lightest colors of the dipping ink line These are designed to act as contrast paints, meaning they are designed to go over a zenithal highlight. What didn't you do with them? You didn't try them over a zenithal. The few reviews I have found that do try them over a zenithal they have come out absolutely amazing. Huge review fail my friend.
Also, the name is just that, a name, they aren't designed to be a dip, if they were designed to be a dip they wouldn't be in dropper bottles. They name is just a joke poking fun at the "dip" process some people used to, and maybe still do, to speed shade armies. Want proof, go watch all the dipping ink videos from GSW, find one where they "dip" a model.

As mentioned in the video, cost was a huge factor for even being able to do this. I did try and get the closest colour to the contrast I did have but I could only use their website pictures as a reference. When it came is when I found out it was significantly more yellow than expected. Would I have loved to try more colours, absolutely, but shipping jacking up the price to 10 euros a bottle just wasn't economical for me to do so on a video I knew would only get a few thousand views at most.
Even the original Dip method where people would dip into a vat of finish, not everyone dipped models in, some would just use a large brush to paint it on. Thus "dip" has become more synonymous with "Overall wash in a single colour" which I think these would absolutely be able to do as well thinned out a bit.
"These are designed to act as contrast paints, meaning they are designed to go over a zenithal highlight." GW never designed contrast to go over a zenithal, maybe at the back of their head they did, but every promo and tutorial shows them going over a white or beige primer. However I said multiple times in the video that I think they would do really well over a zenithal, and even did have footage of me doing so in my final thoughts. So I don't disagree at all, they would be fantastic for zenithal, even better for colour zenithals.
Also I wanted to do some different things with them for my video then just painting them as intended because most other videos would have done that already, and I like to experiment and not do things as intended. It's why only the first test was done as the intended way while the others tested things like how it covers over colours, how well it thins and how well it glazes and airbrushes, things where the colour didn't matter that much, and when it did, I took it into account.

@@PaintmanJourneying If you understand the colors are completely on opposite ranges of the spectrum why bother comparing them and then coming to some conclusion on it that anyone with a functioning brain knows is complete crap because your comparison is so wrong you can't possibly draw a conclusion from it? I'm not trying to be mean here, but as far as a review video goes this is probably the single worst review video for a painting product I have ever seen.
Your cost excuse for not having a contrast paint to compare it to by color is also super bad. You couldn't go to your local hobby shop and buy a contrast paint closer to the proper color? Give me a break. If you are that poor you need to rethink this as a hobby, and with the equipment you need to make these videos I am pretty sure you aren't that poor.
But I like there being no excuse for not trying them for their actual purpose, going over a zenithal highlight. Except for the red, every other color in the range I have seen go on over a zenithal covers and looks exactly like a contrast paint. And that should have been your first test because honestly, comparing the colors to a different lines colors means nothing. The only test that matters is whether they act as contrast paints, which they absolutely do, and do quite well from the properly done reviews I have seen.
Again, I realize my words sound harsh, but bro, I'm just being honest unlike the rest of the responders. Or I am just smarter than them and see the obvious flaw in methodology. I don't believe in placating people, especially when those people are making a video that could financially effect a company and it's employees.
