  • Darling, it's better down where it's wetter here at Breakfast All Day. We have an early review of "The Little Mermaid," the latest live-action remake of a Disney animated classic, and we have differing takes on whether it works or is even necessary. But we agree that Halle Bailey is tremendous in the title role, with a rendition of "Part of Your World" that will blow you away. Directed by Rob Marshall ("Chicago"), written by David Magee. Co-starring Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay. In theaters Friday, May 26.

Literally her singing was the only thing good about this movie.. so her being a singer tracks.. but it was slow paced and boring.. the cgi was terrible.. they changed basically the whole story... scuttle was in my opinion a horrible choice to go in the direction they went.. this dude in the video said it's hard to make disney princes "interesting" so to really make the prince less interesting ariel saves him.. what part of any of this is good.. even trying to give a good review made it seem bad😂

Ariel has been my fave bc I identify with curiosity and wanting more out of life. So I was scared to see this genuinely. But I absolutely loved it and was surprised I did. I hated the CGI & loved the updates to storyline; it felt more meaningful to Ariel's story and the romance. Even the piece with her Father at end was all quite touching. Very pleasantly surprised Disney fan!!!

Rewatched the original lately and was surprised by how perfect the movie was... until Ariel loses her voice and she becomes an extra in her own film. Yeah, the original has problems. You know who else has problems? The people that criticize this movie for casting black actors then get upset that you call them racist because apparently its worse to call someone a racist than to actually be racist.

Christy, I agree the underwater scenes are often inorganic and lean toward the uncanny. However, in regards to how they animated Ariel's hair? They did exactly what us fans wanted, needed and expected! They were being faithful to the original's animation of Ariel's gloriously malleable and voluminous locks. When did you last see the original? Ariel's hair, the way it constantly undulates and bounces, flowingly shifting with her every move, is part of what makes Ariel Ariel. To so many of us, it's iconic ;)

Tbh, im afraid that it will be unfairly review bombed on Rotten Tomatoes.
But for like 1 negative review, ive seen like 8-9 positive reviews afterwards.
As a fan of the original movie, I know thr animation is a loose adaptation of an original work. I don't think the live action will be bad either.

I was lucky enough to be born at the inception of the Disney Renaissance. As a wee toddler when "The Little Mermaid" was released, I was immediately enamored. It spoke to me as it still does. It was the first VHS I ever owned! A gift from my parents for my 4th birthday. I adore all the films from that era and Beauty and the Beast is a strong runner up, but, even from early childhood, and, however inexplicable at the time, the fabulosity of Ursula and dazzling handsomeness of Eric, with his perfectly-contrasting raven hair and crystal blue eyes, stirred my seedling gay soul. So, I am so happy this remake is as good as it is. Aside from the atrocious "Scuttlebutt," the film is a success. And, while all the players are great in their own right, I want to give a shout-out to Javier Bardem. He showcases such a deep well of emotion, often with just his eyes. This helps him deliver a believably profound growth of character within the relative brevity of his scenes.
P.s. I agree with Alonso about Melissa McCarthy's Ursula. She is straight up channeling Pat Carroll. She does so with aplomb and so, one could argue, why deviate from perfection? But, there ARE a few flashes of McCarthy's signature wit that peek through her facsimile of Carroll and they are darn funny. So, again, Alonso is right when he says she should have given herself more artistic freedom.

Ariel saw a boy who never spoke to her and defiantly told her dad she’s in love, then left without telling anyone who loves her and then Eric was uninteresting, her and Eric’s romance was so abrupt. let’s be real the original plot is flat when you think about it. I saw it in 3D and it was Excellent. I loved the movie. The children that are going to see it will see a beautiful story, beautiful under water scenes and funny moments with a beautiful Disney Princess. Adults, who are reviewer or People who was against it are going to see the movie differently because they are going into dissect every thing. What I have seen is that everyone that saw the movie gave Halle Bailey praise for her performance and for that I felt proud. Many were against her, but her revenge was giving a spectacular performance. I give it a 100 out of 10, for the performance and for all the negative chatter said because she was a Black girl playing a mermaid. 🎉

Nice to hear that this was good. I wish that Disney had done more to make The Lion King different in the same way as opposed to literally being a near shot-for-shot remake minus the removal of one of the films best/most iconic songs; Be Prepared. (A silly and flabbergasting decision seeing as how Edris Elba IS A RAPPER/SINGER IN REAL LIFE AND COULD HAVE EASILY CARRIED THAT SONG.)

I grew up on the original, it’s one of the first movies I remember seeing and I still love it to this day. I can’t imagine preferring this new version to it, but I’m glad neither of you thought it was a total disaster - that’s encouraging! I always thought it was unfair the way people would write Ariel off as having nothing going on beyond wanting to get the guy. Even in the first movie I feel like it’s clear that she’s had a fascination with life beyond her kingdom and her father’s rules before she ever saw Eric. Growing up there was always this debate about who was the better role model, Ariel or Belle and detractors of TLM would always reduce it to “Ariel gave everything up for a man!” But if we’re gonna take these things that seriously then there’s also an argument to made about Beauty and Beast basically being an ode to Stockholm Syndrome and perpetuating the idea that you can love an abusive man into changing his ways. Anyway, I’m really excited for Halle Bailey if nothing else. That woman is a star.

@@BreakfastAllDay Apparently, when Prince Eric is asking the voiceless Ariel what her name is, he first guesses Diana, only to receive a shake of the head. He then guesses Catherine, receiving a vehemently negative response. In the original, the negative reaction was to the name Mildred, a name much less likely to be currently popular. Some are interpreting juxtaposing the names Diana and Catherine and Ariel's highly negative reaction to the name Catherine as a dig at Princess Catherine. Could be a coincidence or could be someone involved in the script who either doesn't like the royal family in general or sides with the Sussexes in the family drama. Many people - and even the film reviewers among them - forget/overlook how for a Disney princess character from 1989, Ariel was a novelty, and many steps up from what came before her. While at the same time the filmmakers purposely wanted to stay very much *inside* the Disney fairytale framework. Ariel had initiative, interests/hobbies, a charming rebelliousness, rashness while being innocent (an apt characteristic of a teenager), and curiosity towards the world. In this review all that is left of that is a joke about her being a hoarder. I mean, that’s one way to look at it, I guess... a shallow and not very kind way (joke and all), if you are indeed looking for *some* character traits in her.
As for me - as the intended audience at the time - I just fell in love with the original film, and got out with ecstatic feelings of magic. And that I think was the main aim of the filmmakers (the creatives, that is). Don’t see a point in this adaptation, other than being a cash grab, like most of them. I’m from the camp that believes that you should just show the originals to today’s kids.🤷‍♀If people in general, and kids in particular, do enjoy it that’s cool though.

  • @anthonylaudati
    @anthonylaudati Рік тому

Halle Bailey is just fantastic as Ariel, but the weak point of the film is making Prince Eric just the same bland, whitebread prince we've seen in all the old Disney movies (Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc.). He is clearly out of place with the rest of the other characters. It would have been better if they extended the diversity to the revamping of the prince character as well. Also, as a minor point, when I watched the movie with my friends, their six-year-old daughter whispered to me, "That's not Ariel. Ariel has red hair." Just to maintain a little consistency, it would been nice if Halle Bailey's hair was a vibrant red as it was with the original cartoon Ariel.

I was given the original words as books - they indeed are horror but at least to me their were source of fun and learnt multiple things.
I have no idea why especially Americans think that children need 'funny' light drama. Children actually need horror imo.

I do think the prince is given much more to do but the actor comes across with goofball vibes and his song performance was cringe. So I loved it lol.

Just having seen the most recent commercials for it, I’m shocked at those numbers. The underwater stuff looks SO badly done, I’m left wanting to scratch my eyes out. I saw it in the first trailer when Triton first chastises Ariel, and it has only looked worse with every clip or TV spot I’ve seen. Part of me wonders how much of the positive reception it’s getting is unconsciously to do with critics understandably feeling the need to push back against the racist vitriol with which the film has been saddled.
