What a fantastic song ! My mother love this song always.
She thinks that song is at the beginning of World War II in the Pacific. She thinks that song is at the beginning of World War II in the Pacific. But both my mother and my father are now deceased. My father and my mother had to endure this second war. A Great Honor to my dearest parents. May they rest forever in the house of God.

A beautiful song. Sadly, it's reputation suffers from the fallout of Japan's bloody attempted expansion into Manchuria in 1931.

    • @T3nMiDGET5711
      @T3nMiDGET5711 2 роки тому +4

You mean Bloody attempted expansion into China in 1937. Because the invasion of Manchuria was a success The Japanese kicked out the war lords and set up a puppet state under Emperor Puyi that lasted until 1945.
Also sidenote because I’m not sure if this is true but I think this song was written from the perspective of a Japanese soldier stationed in China

Well, you’re right technically.. to me, I was a little girl, my dad fought in Korea.. before I was born. A bloody day, his sgt. Killed himself in front of my dad. My dad was 22. They were under attack, and his sgt freaked out. My dad was put in command. He helped carry five men out of a mine field, mosey riverbank. My dad was 5’10”.. a golden gloves boxer.. very fit. He was going on adrenaline. I read about this story in this magazine my dad got from veterans services.. anyway.. he never talked much about Korea. But he told me, when he was in the middle of it… he ducked his head and prayed to God, “if you get me out of here safely Lord, I will be the best man I know how to be for the rest of my life”. He got out. He lived up to his promise. A cop after the military, we knew he was there. I was afraid of him sometimes. He was a brave, strong, funny witty, smart man. I wish he were still around, that’s for sure. He was the word master! He wrote a poem for me when I was 11. I still have it in my box of treasures! I was lucky to have him as a dad. He sang this song to me..(to everyone). And when we were transferred to Japan later on in the sixties, early seventies, I was eight.. and learned Japanese so fast! He gave me a beautiful jewelry box that played “shinano yoru”

Japanese song "China Night" (中国之夜 or 支那の夜)
Admittedly, this is a beautiful Japanese song with a graceful melody, but many people, including the Chinese, might not know the sinister background of this otherwise touching song.
In a nutshell, in the late 30s and early 40s, a series of movies were made by a Japanese-funded company 满洲映画 based in then Manchukuo in what is now Northeast China. One of the most famous films produced was China Night (支那の夜). As expected, these movies were produced by the Japanese with an aim to propagate their imperialistic and aggressive intentions. Therefore, most older Chinese who know the history and background of this song China Night aka 中国之夜 aka 支那の夜, would take the song with a pinch of salt !
But evidently, from the contents of the posts, most if not all of those non-Chinese veterans of the Korean War did not seem to be aware of this background of the song.

Thank you for sharing this very interesting information. I love this song and did wonder why a Japanese would write about China. My historical knowledge about these two countries is limited to High School History. What I remember of the few paragraphs in the history books was more about conflict and aggressive invasion. Your information has enlightened me and I can still enjoy the music knowing the truth. It's still a beautiful song.

I've made a better translation of this song for those interested. It is difficult to translate, but I think this captures the meaning better:
That night in China, that night in China
In the purple night, the harbor lights
Reveal a dream-like junk sailing out
Ah ah…ah ah, I can’t forget the sound of her bowed lute
That night in China, now a night of dreams…
That night in China, that night in China
A lantern swaying in a narrow window
Appears my Chinese girl, like a red-caged bird
Ah ah…ah ah, she sings a song, an inconsolable love song
That night in China, now a night of dreams…
That night in China, that night in China
In the evening at the harbor wall, through sheets of rain I was watching you go
Your rouge running like the falling of red flower pedals
Ah ah…ah ah, though we are apart I will never forget
That night in China, now a night of dreams…

The original singer was hamako watanabe, who sang the song in 1938. yoshiko yamaguchi (李香兰 aka Shirley Yamaguchi) sang it when she was staring in the controversial 1940 movie China Night.

Can anyone name the music played on xylophone (? I think). It began at :18, before the beginning of the actual music. I have heard this bit of music in other Chinese music, and played in several movies over the last century. I would love to know the name, the origin, and the meaning... if there is one. This is the first piece of Asian music that I remember from a childhood that was so long ago.

There is no Chinese version. It is a Japanese song made for a Japanese movie, or you can say the Japanese movie was inspired by this Japanese song.
