The funny thing is that when she her top off and he cups her breast, which the director told him to do without informing Bancroft, and she nonchalantly starts rubbing her top and seems to not to react at all, Dustin felt like he was going to bust out laughing so just as he is about to lose it he walks away and bangs his head off the wall and tells himself to stop laughing, get it together but Bancroft continues with the scene so he returns and finishes the dialogue. Pure accident....pure genius.
I have seen this movie so many times, and EVERY TIME this scene has me in hysterics. It's just brilliant. It's shot SO seriously, with such chic dryness, and against that energy the humor is just fantastic. Mrs. R's waiting to blow out her mouthful of smoke...the way she focuses on rubbing the stain off her collar...Ben's head-banging...it's SO GREAT! Not to mention how cleverly Mrs. R goads Ben into doing what she wants. ;)
one of my favortie movies I love just how Dustin Hoffmans character is just so nervious like a kid looking through a key hole at a naked girl one of his best roles
A classic film with a classic example of simplistic reverse psychology. Hoffman thought he couldn't act and was miscast. He was a nervous wreck making this film. Luckily his character was equally insecure so his on-camera meltdown was hailed by critics as great acting.
funny thing is hoffman was 30 and bankroft was 35! but somehow he plays a young man and she's the older woman. hoffman stated this himself on inside the actors studio!
I can't stop watching this scene, especially that the part from 1:42 - 2:00 was unscripted. It amazes me how they carried of this scene without laughing, especially Anne Bancroft. They're awesome and so is the entire movie.
Interesting fact: Dustin Hoffman could not stop cracking up during this scene, and the walking away and banging his head on the wall was ad-libbed, because he could not stop laughing, and smiling. interesting how things work out.
@@WoWCasuist Brilliant Anne Bancroft ad libbed the gesture of rubbing out the stain on her clothes, while Ben is trying to seduce her. Dustin Hoffman later said, she stole the show. And she did!
Anne Bancroft- what a tremendous actress! She could do no wrong. I had read that the hand-on-breast move was indeed unplanned; Mike Nichols told Hoffman to do it without any warning to Bancroft. The head-banging was NOT part of the plan..it was simply Hoffman working off his embarrasment of not having the ploy "work". Nichols absolutely loved the scene, so much that he began laughing hysterically. So fo him, it worked...as it does for most of us as well!
"Benjamin, do you not find me desirable?" "Oh no, Mrs. Robinson, you are the most desirable of all my parents' friends." It was the summer of love and I was only twelve years of age but in my mind I was Benjamin Braddock!
Absolutely excellent film making techniques. Love it how Benjamin kisses her before she exhales her smoke. And how she asks him for a hanger, he pulls it out of the closet and hands it to her, only to have her put her coat right back in the closet. Love how he just places his hand on her breast. Love how she shames him into making love by calling him inadequate... and love the last vision we have his the look on her face right as he slams the door, obviously enjoying her victory. Heh!
The funny thing is that the brast part and him hammering his head on the wall wasn´t in the script. He went to the wall and hammered his head on it because he thought he screwed up ^^
And your statement shows the difference between the crass speech of today and the classic, classy and understated cinema of yesteryear. Dustin Hoffman said "Don't move". You said "bitch, where are you going? I'm hitting that!!" That's why the remakes of today will never touch the originals.
It is funny. When this first aired I was a kid and she seemed old. Now, she seems to be one of the most attractive women ever on screen. She was only in her late 30s here but they tried to make her look a little older. Anyway, at 59 (me) now she is seems young at that time--life is so funny. RIP Anne Bancroft.
At 1:44, the touching of her bra wasn't scripted, and Dustin Hoffman just went for it. Anne Bancroft's lack of reaction was just something he couldn't handle, and when he walks back to slam his head on the wall, he's actually trying not to crack up. Watch his body language closely there and you'll see it.
Yeah, me too. Is it just me or are older women typically a lot more mature, chill and overall more fun to be around? These younger women have weird depression issues and lots of annoying baggage.
@reedunculous If I am not mistaken, Dustin thought this out himself..and the beating the head was just a reaction not to laugh or sth like that - is that correct? Question to you who saw the bonus to The Graduate.
i just watched this for the first time at age 30, the film is amazing! very good film, love the dialogue, the way the scenes move around, and the soundtrack is really cool. After seeing this I can see where waynes world 2 got a couple ideas from and also where risky business got a large part of it's influence from lol. Really good stuff
The character is the crux that Dustin realizes he now is in. He was brought up without knowing anything of the sort and the new opppurtunity is testing him. He realizes something in his moral fiber that he is in the wrong place.
Both Hoffman and Bancroft are amazing... watch "Dustin Hoffman salutes Mike Nichols" on youtube for some info about when he bangs his head on the wall... nice little story :)
What I had to suspend disbelief about was that his parents were very Aryan, blonde and tall, and yet he was short, swarthy, and Jewish. I understand that in the novel he was also tall and blond and the filmmakers actually had Robert Redford in mind, which would've made sense, though both actors at 30 were still too old for the part.
Ms Robinson: "Do you find me undesirable?" Benjamin: "Oh no, Ms Robinson. I think--I think you're the most attractive of all my parents' friends." HA HA HA, one of my favorite movie lines of all-time.
@cinerama62 I kinda did but it never went *that* far. It's how Mr. Robinson unwittingly describes the very struggle of "fighting them off" while at the same time he believes a man in his 20s should start "sowing his wild oats".
Totally agree! Anne was a knockout so sexy and hot, i just want to slap Ben dead in the face lmao. I mean come on! man she was just one sexy woman. I can say i do dig older woman too anyway but damn lol. Anne really had it
Anne's disinterest when Dustin handles her breast is absolute cinematic perfection. She owned this movie.
Anne had a great classic look. Her hair and clothes are amazing stylish without being dated.
The last frame with that look on Bancroft's face is like: "got you"
The funny thing is that when she her top off and he cups her breast, which the director told him to do without informing Bancroft, and she nonchalantly starts rubbing her top and seems to not to react at all, Dustin felt like he was going to bust out laughing so just as he is about to lose it he walks away and bangs his head off the wall and tells himself to stop laughing, get it together but Bancroft continues with the scene so he returns and finishes the dialogue. Everything about this scene is so incredibly clever.

Anne Bancroft was the greatest American born actress. Her range of characterizations was incomparable.
Can never ever get tired of watching this movie or listening to the soundtrack.
"Do you find me undesirable?...OH no Mrs. Robinson I think you're the most attractive of all my parent's friends" that line gets me everytime lmao!
A brilliant and beautiful actress. One of the top 2 or 3 actresses ever in American film.
A classic film with a classic example of simplistic reverse psychology. Hoffman thought he couldn't act and was miscast. He was a nervous wreck making this film. Luckily his character was equally insecure so his on-camera meltdown was hailed by critics as great acting.
She WAS. Anne Bancroft died in 2005. Even shortly before her death, she still looked beautiful, classy, and italian.

She was incredible...period!

Anne Bancroft was one hot lady. She played the part for Mrs. Robinson perfectly. RIP.
I am 73 now. Anne Bancroft is my favourite actress. So sad to hear she died of cancer.
@socialmoo Great interview! Funny how the "banging his head" was also impromptu. Thanks so much for that link!
I don’t know why but I find this movie hilarious. The way Ben talks is just funny to me.

Same here. My husband hates awkward humor, but it's my favorite.

Hi
Anne was amazing, still is.
She's die.
But

One of the greatest movies of all time. No CGI - sheer talent!

Absolutely…wow…give me more films…like this.
super/fantastic performances.
“Benjamin wound this be easier for you in the dark!” 🤣
Ben: "Wood or wire, they have both."
Joan: "No Wire Hangers EVER!!!!!!!!"
The bit in this scene I love is just before he shuts the door watch her face it's a brief moment but says it all I GOT YA it's brillant
She is beautiful and classy. An Italian too.
Anne was 36 in this movie and Dustin was 30.
One of the best movies ever 👌

R.I.P Anne Bancroft 🙏🏾

That's pretty hilarious actually... I wonder how the scene was originally supposed to play out. :P
Typical.

Don't worry about it, I was 20 when I lost mine. If it's the right girl, she'll be grateful you trust her enough to tell her and she'll help. :)
makes it even funnier! thanks for the anecdote :)

How on earth did Mel Brooks get this babe to marry him? Mos' props, Sir!
Laughter
He met her on a talk show and got the name of the restaurant she was eating at later on, then went there to chat her up, I read.
I cant believe she was only 35 in this!!
just five years older than Dustin Hoffman. That's great acting!
2:50 that's a laugh hu hu LOL!!
Great movie. Times have sure changed since the 60s but then again...the more things change the more they remain the same.

Anne Bancroft was also fabulous in the Helen Keller story.
