We may be strong but are lacking the physique that can be translated from our strength. These videos have saved my commutes to uni for this whole year! Thanks for all your effort into making this community this big and strong! You are what we really needed.
I remember those times where people thought I can easily bench in the 315 range but in actuality I was 1 rep maxing not even 225, just because my chest was well developed from all the isolation work. On the other hand I was relatively strong in triceps overhead extensions and ez bar curls just from taking them very seriously. Bodybuilding is just way more than just lifting x amount of weights, mind muscle connection is a real thing especially on isolations. Nice conversation, much love to you guys!
Basement bodybuilding is becoming my favorite channel along with alpha destiny . It is saving me mad time by not pursuing something I don't want..... and keeping me in check with fitness goals

I'm freaking loving these videos, Alex. There are so many gems of information we can learn from sprinkled throughout the entire video. I felt very identified with some of the topics you two discussed (plateaus, lagging parts, minimalism, powerbuilding, bias, etc). Mistakes are never a bad thing if you learn from them. Nobody started their lifting journey knowing all there is to it (let's be honest, that's not even possible), but the main takeaway is that we persevere despite the stumbles, poor decisions and narrow mindedness. It is the process of overcoming our own misconceptions and lack of knowledge that makes us mentally strong FIRST and physically strong SECOND. Props to every natural lifter who's been working in the trenches for years. Your body is a reflection of your mental fortitude and resiliency. Be proud of what you've earned! Greetings from Spain 💪🦵

as a powerlifting coach these podcast type videos have been helpful with me learning how to program for hypertrophy. good stuff as always alex
This feels like my lifting journey. I loved training when I first started and I did movements I enjoyed. I eventually started looking into a bunch of powerlifting and strength training guys. I ended up have injury after injury from dogmatic training. Now I’m in my 30s and honestly training at home with the equipment I love I’m starting to fall in love with it again. I’m making great gains. Slow progress as far as adding weight but I feel great. Love the volume training and love the no judgment aspect of training at home.
Technically I've been doing some "basement bodybuilding" after my 3-4 months of long Covid and being stuck doing college at home. This was a good collab 🙏
Watching these interviews and finding golden nuggets of information makes me proud to be part of the natty lifting community. Thanks Alex and Basement Bodybuilding! 💪

Highly agree that mindset plays a big role in bodybuilding. While it is true that you need to get stronger to get bigger, the strength should not come at the cost of form and technique.

Thank you for introducing me to this guy Alex, will totally check out his stuff! Wanted to return the favor. Not sure if you know who Barkage is but he has some super useful information regarding calisthenics. He is also quite funny imo I would highly recommend his channel.
This speaks to my soul. I don’t have elite numbers or measurements by any means, but there was a phase where I was frustrated my arms weren’t growing. Took me a long time to realize I was focusing on the deadlift and bench and squat too much.
Best thing I incorporated was decline skullcrushers I saw from a Bugenhagen clip. That shit blew up my arms about half an inch within a year, I guess my triceps never had that much solid stimulation until then.
Now I’m at a home gym setup and I made sure to have a stable bench that could decline so I could keep doing it

Absolutely love learning from you guys, as a 75kg, 179cm 18yr male (trained seriously for 2+ years), I'm not very strong but i have a decent amount of muscle mass. Both your videos have helped my training and maturity so thank you. I was just going to ask your opinions on adding an arm day (start off low volume) when doing an LULU program. I only have 3 sets of bicep curls and 7 sets of tricep work in my current program so I was thinking of adding a small home gym arm day on one rest day. Obviously, I'd have to experiment with volume and recovery. Thanks again :)

For the sake of diminishing confusion remember everyone, “powerlifting” is not “strength training”. Powerlifting is a sport of specializing in the big 3 where they may even use tricks to put more more weight on the bar. You can’t specialize in everything at once whether the lifts are the big 3, big 5, or literally anything. And remember that 90% of strength for naturals come from gaining muscle. You will never neuroadapt your way from 315 to 405-500 the way PED users do
I'd still say it's strength training but definitely hyperspecialized and you're right that most of our strength comes from gaining actual muscle.
@@AlexLeonidas Yeah I just separate the terms because I see people start getting the idea that unless they’re a “powerlifter” they aren’t strength training. Overspecializing forever like a lot of people do wouldn’t even be ideal for maxing strength potential on the big 3 because they’re neglecting muscles that heavily contribute to the lifts

Honestly I think it’s very possible that the “primary movers” in the pressing movements is the triceps! Just look at Julius Maddox(the strongest bencher of all time) he credits his big bench to his triceps and often isolates them with doing AMRAP sets of pushdowns with a full stack at the end of his workouts.

I'd love to see both of you talk with Jason Gallant from Natural Gallant Bodybuilding. It would be a very intersting conversation. Your man Phil from P.G. Coaching talked with him a few years ago. Jason's a very inciteful natural bodybuilder with over 20 years of experience and great advice. He's a lifter that goes against the grain, rather going on instinct and what feels right and what works for him over time. He's a huge proponent of tailoring your training to you and not doing something just because an influencer says you should.

That mindset of getting more mass to perform better instead of the opposite is exactly what I've been doing intuitively since day one, and I think it's because I've never been contaminated by the powerlifting mindset, since I don't really give a fuck about the "big three" (nomination that I don't agree with) in terms of raising them for the sake of getting better at them with no real purpose. I can do 4 sets of 6 with a hundred pounds on the barbell curl and I train it like twice a month at most (2 years of training), and that's when I have access to a commercial gym. Getting stronger on various lifts for each muscle group is the way to go to have the most complete physique you can.

1:21:15 I actually got into lifting because my legs were so skinny and my main goal hypertrophy wise is still mainly tree trunk legs. Obviously I'm not only training legs but its definitely my main priority. Also 1:26:00 I love doing a full body 6-7/days a week split, getting in and out in 45 min
Same, used to run cross country and was known as the skinny kid. Now, my legs are actually the most developed part of my physique. How do you usually structure a 6 day a week full body program? I’ve seen examples like Jeff Nippards, but curious to learn some more

I hate biceps training so much but I added 1 bicep exercise into both of my push days. Eventually I'll add 2. I only hate them due to wrist pain.

Hypertrophy first, relative strength follows and can be super impressive
I typically calculate my 1RM from my AMRAPs or working sets (8-10 reps) and then test it out every few months, that’s worked well for me. It feels like the perfect balance of hypertrophic training/volume, but I still get to enjoy testing out my strength and feeling like a powerlifter 😅.

My training is on point... BUT I CANT EAT. I am not talking like a litle. I can go a day or to without food, np! I tried bulking many times but cant stick to the volume oif food for more than a few weeks... eaven if I it calorie dense foods... Thinking of jumping on mk 667 for the apetite, have no idea what else to do! Progressing on this apetite seems impossible or very slow. I ashived alot, 17 insh lean arms etc... but I cant seem to get futher without a good bulk

It's no coincidence that deadlifting guys, who have incorporated deadlift in their routine for power or hypertrophy, look yoked in the traps/neck. Regular BB or DB shrugs do the trick too

I’m only dead lifting 405 lb and haven’t even lifted that exact weight for six months because I’ve been doing more volume on the dead lift
For example 3 sets of three or four sets of four or three sets of six
My workout to take 90 minutes and I would honestly say 30/40 minutes of that all the deadlifts the hypertrophy literally takes 45 minutes
With some rehab work at the end
Building towards one rep max it’s highly overrated unless you are competing if it’s just for the game of life and hypertrophy stick to the lower reps
I’m not gonna go into the “get bigger to get stronger” rabbit hole again as if getting stronger is an easy thing to do. I did that and stalled for an entire year following NH’s methods.
I’m just gonna keep things simple and get stronger on bicep/tricep isolation barbell work using powerlifting methods instead of overcomplicating things and trying to “do a bunch of lifts that will get me bigger” because that approach would surely lead me to spinning my wheels.

Since when did squat, bench and DL get put into its own category? Movements we have all been doing for years, when did it all become complicated? Put the weight on the bar and lift it
I agree, in the last year or so Iv reduced how much “fitness” shit I watch drastically because people just over complicate the fuck out of it. Lift and do it with intensity and add weight over time..Boom. Literally that simple lmao.
