    Here in the states,,some marinas require a lockable discharge valve ....so they can put their lock on to guarantee no one accidentally has a discharge .

    Ricky I saw that the vent pipe was looped downwards, if it gets water in it it won’t be able to vent.

    I was watching The Laura Dekker solo circumnavigation. She stopped in PE, November 2011, a few yachts down was Dorado, all shiny Blue and white. How cool is that.

    Can't believe your new hose already broke. I hope the new stuff is better. Cheers.

      It wasn't a new hose. It was the existing toilet hose that we reinstalled.

    Great job Ricky. Plumbing is the one job I hate and I only work in houses. It looks ten time harder on board a boat. On thing is the same though-you spend more time getting parts than installing the plumbing. Take care, stay well and thank you for the fun video.

    That is exactly how i plumbed in my holding tank,works flawlessly and no smells,the discharge and skin fitting is 50mm/2" so little chance of a blockage. just be careful to never over fill yours as the breather should also act as an overflow,but your no smell filter might block liquids,and a burst holding tank is something you never want to experience!
    watch out for a build up of barnacles in the skin fitting,we had a crew blow up a holding tank when it got blocked!

    Heads up guys, salt water flush and urine react together to deposit a hard silica lining slowly slowly to the toilet discharge pipe unless you regularly add proprietary chemical. Just bought a saltwater boat where the 1.5in discharge hose was blocked to 1/4in dia.

    • @livingwiththemaias
      @livingwiththemaias  3 роки тому

      Yeah. We already experienced this 🤣 We flush it out though with acid.

    I've had to make repairs on the toilet, holding tank system on my boat, and that is one task I can't stand. I never get seasick, but just thinking about working on it turns my stomach. I usually throw up at least twice per job. I'm usually game to help other boaters with repairs, and installations, however not for love nor money if poo related.

    Sad at the loss of real estate in the shower. Good to have ample space in the shower. (6’3” me) Ricky you put a lot of thought in this project and glad it came through.

    Mine used to always run through the tank and was gravity drained. I changed to a diverter valve, as that allows urine to be sent overboard even in an anchorage, and more solids (not really solid with the macerator) to be held for dumping offshore. This stretches the capacity of the tank a little.

    Quick question what keep water from flowing up thru the bottom of the tank and the thru hole?

  • @ryanh4889
    @ryanh4889 4 роки тому +1

    Another well done episode! I was worried the bottom of the holding tank was lower than the waterline! Also with the droop in the vent line you should never overflow your tank because the vent line would have liquid in it and not be able to 'vent' overboard.

    all Im thinking is
    .......... better him than me
    what I have is a homemade composting toilet and the urine side going to a holding tank plumbed like yours, not because I thought about it kind of came to be.
    in this way I never have to empty the holding tank at a dock, just when the boat is the legal distance out, and its without the ethical or environmental issues of number two. If you were wondering the composting side is without issue, it has no plumbing, no complications, it just works and is issue free. But it needs a design that keeps number one and number two separate with complete certainty. Most ppl with composting heads end up carrying the jug of number one around the marina to empty it out in their toilets every two weeks or so. Mines 20 gallon storage so it never really gets full, it just goes over the side whenever Im out at sea. All that said the carbon vent is a great idea coz even number one will smell, I was thinking a stick on aquarium temperature gauge would probably indicate how full the tank is. The simpler the better, the less things to go wrong the less they will, you did the right thing.

    No..No..No....not through tank only, you will regret it half way across the Atlantic Rickie. Always the shortest route at sea. Love you guys, watched you since the 1st episode. Originally from Walker...Prospect Ave. Fair Winds and enjoy the journey from Uk.

    If you put a swimming pool chlorine tablet in the holding tank it will kill the bacteria and keep the spell down we use them at work on the charter boats a y valve is a good idea also incase the holding tank blocks good luck with it all Richo

    Maserator on overboard discharge ?

    • @z_actual
      @z_actual 4 роки тому

      As I understand it, it all goes to the holding tank. The bottom of the tank is the thru hull. Close the valve and it stays in the tank, open the valve and it goes over the side from the tank.

    Great episode, and interesting how you managed to fix it in. You make it look so easy. What happens to your other excess water from the shower, sinks etc when you are at dock. Are these allowed to be discharged even when you are in a marina?

    • @livingwiththemaias
      @livingwiththemaias  4 роки тому

      Thanks. Some marinas don't mind and others do. Here we go take a shower at the marina facilities. Most marinas cater for you to shower etc..

  • @dlavarco

    Pardon my ignorance but if you are only using the tank while at a dock or anchored near a marina, what happens to the waste when you're at sea? Does it go right in the ocean?

    I really like your videos, but this time I have to critizie something. Why did you put the gauge into the structure, instead of putting it into the door, not weakening the structure for no reason?
    The door might had been a very good choice also for readability when passing by, instead of having the instrument on the side. You might not open that door all the time anyways.
    I feel pity for that choice you made for the instrument installed on the side!
    p.s. But still a thumbs up as usual of course! And my best wishes to South Africa from Berlin, Germany!

    Hello there Ricky and Simone, just love watching All your Project vidclips .... Always good to see someone that is really proficient and methodical in their approach and finish .... Be an 'Engineer' myself I can 'Appreciate' your Doco's.
    Question :- Your Poop-Line looks so small ???? I know that it has gone thru' the Macerator Pump, But still .... :-) :-) :-) . The Outlet .... Is this above or below the Waterline ???? ... If Below, is there an outlet fitting that has a 'Venturi' Effect sothat it will Draw the contents out while underway ?????. To get below the Waterline you could 'Tip' the hull with an inflatable 'Flotation Bag' ..... Sorry for all the questions, I am just living your 'Situations' vicariously thru' You Guys ..... Just Love it !!!! :-) :-) :-) ... Lekker bly, geniet die Mooi Kaap .... Cheers from Christchurch, New Zealand
