Pickin' & Trimmin' in a Down-Home North Carolina Barbershop - Short Film

- Pickin' & Trimmin' is a documentary short film from 2008 profiling "The Barbershop" in Drexel, North Carolina, where Lawrence Anthony and David Shirley have barbered for decades, and where bluegrass musicians have jammed in the back room every weekend. Directed by Matt Morris, the award-winning film showcases the people and atmosphere of a small community in rural America, perhaps better than anything you've seen before. And the music played in the back room is simply wonderful.

I grew up in East Tennessee and now live in Memphis. This video captures the obvious beauty of the music and even the camaraderie. When you move away from Appalachia and revisit, its easy to miss the underappreciated art of storytelling which is also represented well in this video. I appreciate storytellers like David Shirley as an artist. Perhaps he added more to this video and he's not playing an instrument.
Get off exit 107 Drexel I-40. Take right and stay straight thru the intersection at O'Reillys. It'll be around 1.5 - 2miles on left. Beside railroad tracks.
Gotta love this small town haha
I was fortunate enough to visit the barber shop yesterday with my wife and grandson. I don't think I've ever been treated more like family anywhere. The bond these musicians have is a sight to behold. At this very moment, my 2 year old grandson is pretending to pick a guitar. We'll be back... Often, I hope.
The bald mans brush, wonderful - I could listen to those old guys all days long, storytelling at it's best - 10/10
This is the honest simple reason why I became a Barber, and I am blessed with my trade. I tip my hat and say thank you to these fine gentleman for keeping the trade pure!!
I can almost smell that sweet mountain air. Thank you for bringing these folk into my home.
I learned to speak english in a little town called Belmont, N.C.
Watching these incredible guys playing bluegrass and living a beautiful life makes me realize that they are a lot smarter than me.
It´s not a matter of money, it´s all about happiness.
What a great old place - somewhere for the oldtimers to hang out...sadly these old school barbershops are few & far between; let's hope for a revival!
Man oh man….nothing wrong with a place like that!!!Thank ya Jesus for Country Folks!!!
My dad Joe Patton picks a banjo Saturday's. He's 78 and still can make it ring. My favorite place to hear bluegrass. Great people .
I just met the coolest dude tonight at the store. He had a badass hotrodded dunebuggy. He referred me to this awesome video & I am incredibly stoked to go hit this place up real soon. I’m so glad I live close enough to be able to go check this little gem of a musical barber shop out.
Come on by and bring your instrument. My dad is the banjo picker playing in the video. 83 years young. Thanks for your support.
“Listen to that ole banjo ring!” 😊
@@FilosophicalPharmer Yeah boy
Spent 2 1/2 hours today listening to that old white haired man in the thumbnail. “They just don’t make’em like they used to!” ☺️👍🏼🪕
What an American treasure this is! So glad I discovered the Drexel Barber Shop.
What an excellent piece of journalism. This could've been recorded in the 60's and would be the same! Matt's a modern day Alan Lomax.
NOW THIS IS AN AWESOME OLD SCHOOL BARBERSHOP !!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE AND THE GENTS WORKING AND HANGING OUT !!!!
Should be called "The Grand Ole Barber Shop"...love it and thank you for a well made video!
This is my idea of paradise. Slow and simple living!
I love the barber culture so much
Love going hear every weekend. Great musicians have played here and there's a few left. Thanks Carroll and David!
Mike, Ray Abernathy playing fiddle?
Stopped in today, was going to get a haircut and listen to the music.
I got there and a finer buncha fellerz you'll never find!!!!!
I didn't have the heart to ask for a haircut, they was havin to much fun!!!!!!!
Excellent film. Wonderful people. The music, fantastic. God bless them all.
This is a tradicion that makes America America! Most of that music was brought here by immigrants from Europe and (largely unwillingly) from Africa. But music unites and from it we profit. But, alas, there were no blacks nor women in that barber shop's back room - but there was music!
What a fantastic place. Can't beat the old timers.
wow! such wonderful place and people.
I think I'm going to Drexel for a haircut!!!!
Whoever disliked this video would still get a great haircut there....
😆🤣 I love it! Great comment man
VERY COOL. In the background. His ww2 era medals. My grandpa was a tank commander for the 1st armored div, 13 reg. and has most of all the same medals. My granddaddy and this feller certainly crossed paths back in the 40's.
Amazing film and music. Shows the true side to barbering
I love this.
I have not been to this barber shop. For one thing, it's 149 miles from me. But the whole atmosphere that is shown here is one of the big reasons why I moved to NC. We actually have the same kind of close friendly feeling at the garage on my road... no banjers or guitars (yet), but some good chattin' and joking.
Like everything else down here, you should not be in a rush to watch this. It'll slow you right down... maybe to where the pulse of your life should be.
David used to cut my hair as a child. I was afraid of the process and being choked by the equipment. David made it loose on my neck and kept me calm.
Thank you so much for the film and sharing !!!!
Thank you.
thank 4 the upload, i always wanted 2 see the film. miss hearing them jam out.
Awesome Film!!!!

Exit 107 from i 40. It's in Drexel right on main street. The place is literally a block from my house. You couldn't live in a better place than Drexel. We don't have much but it's a peaceful community for sure...
All smiles.
If I'm ever in Drexel....

My dad-hero is the man picking that banjo. He's missing his middle finger on his left hand at the nail. Glad he's still making it ring. God bless all at this great place.
