    Super dialogue. Just one question: do you think that the left arm of thelady is too lengthy, little bit looking like a snake. Is this intentional?

      Odd teaches that form is representing something beyond physical representation. For instance, there is a video on UA-cam where he visits a class of art students learning figure drawing. He gives a short lecture pointing to what he believes were not flaws by old masters, but intentional choices & what he believes they represent.
      The most common from historians might b the elongated neck representing beauty & a feminine feature when creating a female portrait/figure piece.
      Yes, I believe they have intentionally exaggerated this arm, just as Odd has (along with other limbs & torsos, etc) in his work. If i find the link, ill add it below.

      Also, Odd comes from the history of art where ‘realism’ was applied to the subject, not how real something looks. A good example is Van Gogh’s Potato Eaters. The figures have more in common with Goya’s Black Paintings than any strong representation of human form. So why did he believe he was painting reality??
      Well, before this moment in time, painters were expected to only paint high subjects like royalty or religious stories. From Cherubs to romanticized landscapes with burning sun sets & fantastical buildings. Painting was meant to elevate life not represent it as reality. So the obvious reaction (as art is a continuing conversation….a reaction to the action, just like creating in general) was to change the accepted subject matter to every day people living common every day lives.
      This is the real difference between his Potato Eaters mode & later his Starry Night era. In his realist days he is working with a very limited pallet, attempting to represent the Earthly footing of the common man…..then later he reaches for bright color & exaggerated piles of paint to represent the experience of seeing nature, the feeling of these moments.
      So again, when artists who work from a school of thought that recognizes the historical conversation of art/painting, they will call a document or record of a subject with strong draftsmanship representational work & they will call any subject that represents life of the average man at any point in history or landscapes that r not enhanced, not romanticized, as realism. A perfect example is Tonslism. I love that style, but I expect Odd would place it under Romanticism.
      Even David has exaggerated form within that sculpture. It was not just a Rembrandt or Odd Nerdrum thing. These guys follow a long history of philosophy within art. There r plenty of others who do not. One must decide for themselves which path is their personal truth.

      Its my interpretation that the elongated arm tells us more about their relationship than attempting to represent form. How ever they love each other (sister/brother? husband/wife? man/child?) their connection, their history is long & stretches over time.
      When viewing any art, we must assume the artist can draw. By doing so, we then ask the question ‘Why have they made these choices?’
