You can only attain a pardon if you have been found guilty of a crime. Basically Gaetz knew this crime was on him and was trying to beat the indictment. He forgot a key element, you can't pardon a crime that has not been adjudicated.

If I were on a jury, I'm not sure I'd vote to convict him on what the DOJ has NOW... The alleged victim (17 at the time) will have to be FORCED to testify if she won't voluntarily...? I'm not sure that's legal/ethical... That's definitely not a great look for DOJ-- to force a person to testify about criminality he/she was involved in AS AN UNDERAGE VICTIM OF SEX TRAFFICKING...

The only way Matt Gaetz would be blindsided is if he faced any real chance of accountability, which he does not. Gaetz falls into the DOJ void of being too big to deal with and too little to bother with. Maybe some day we'll live in a country who's system of justice treats everyone equally. While I am happy about this investigation, I am so unhappy the DOJ dropped it.
Hopefully the ethics committee expanding their investigation leads to an eventual referral to the DOJ and that the investigation from the committee shows the DOJ that they can find what they need to go the legal route. I do not like the man, but he is not guilty in the court of law. So hopefully this will lead to the truth and whatever consequences it leads to.
