To me it was a comment on the human need for meaning and how easily almost anything can take advantage of our need for belief in something bigger than ourselves, the many and varied religions the world has for example.
I like how it starts off with Chancellor and Sky Marshall and then it becomes Tim and Jeff. But I think this little story fits into buzzwords like "POC" very well too.
I enjoyed you reaction and insights on this, I was one of those requesting it and I am glad you enjoyed it. If I could talk you into two more Mitchell and Webb videos ( and I know I'm being greedy, you already watched the first David Mitchell Soapbox video at my request ), I would heartedly recommend, two in which Olivia Coleman participates. They are listed on UA-cam under the titles "Couple Arguing - That Mitchell and Webb Look" and "Mitchell & Webb - Avocado". The second one doesn't give much away in it's title, but I am certain you will love both it and the first one. Although I'm sure you won't relate too it as how could either of such lovely people ever argue.
It's a wonderful, all-purpose satirical sketch. It can apply to religion, it can apply to buzz-words in business or politics, it can apply to fads, or to celebrities, or to the silly oaths you get in B-grade science fiction and fantasy. There's no one single meaning - whatever you see into it, that might be what it's about.
"honestly, Steve...." lol Imagine calling Lord Vadar by his first name or cutsey middle name if he had one! (I know it's not quite the same thing, but the thought cracks me up, although probably Simpsons or Family Guy already did it) And I heard you liken this to Religion, but to me it felt more Star Warsy, perhaps it's just me. Oh and yeah keep up the old slang, it's part of our shared language! :) Cheers guys, had not seen this one before!
Every generation brings their own language, in the 60's and 70's it was all bread, dough, the fuzz, funky, groovy, hip, cool, daddio, etc. and the older generation hated it (along with the long hair). Now it's 'I haven't done that in a minute' (meaning a long time), ill, sick, ridiculous, dope, badass, the shit, fire (all meaning great). Every generation will not approve of the younger generation's new lingo, that's just the cycle of life.. 😂😂
My Nieces are aged 14 and 11... And they keep coming up with these weird words all the time... There's usually never any context as to why or where these words came from... But i did remind them that in another 30 or 40 years time... Their children or grandchildren are going to be saying similar meaningless words to them... And they'll experience the very same looks on their faces ... Whenever they're being told of these new words of the day... And it'll be their turn to look bewildered by their youngsters new words and phrases. 😂
I always assumed that 'no cap' was from 'no kap' short for 'no Kappa'. It's a reference to a Twitch streaming emote called Kappa which is used to suggest that you're being ironic. If something is Kappa it means you don't really mean it so 'no kap' would mean 'I'm being earnest/serious'. Could be wrong but that's where I first saw it 😄
I can’t imagine how the Germans started saying Heil Hitler it just sounds funny to a Brit. We don’t even say his majesty the king without a but if an uncomfortable smile.
The whole point of young people using their own slang is to separate them from the older generation. If ever I use it my son will tell me to never say that again.
Slang changes too quickly with young people, if you're over 26 or 27 things start to get really hard to keep up with. Once you reach 30 you're just watching the social stream from the banks.
It’s like stupid haircuts. When we were teenagers everyone had stupid haircuts, now we have our own teenagers they just have a different stupid haircut. They just do it to be annoying, like we did.
Well the internet tells me that "cap" to mean false, is of uncertain origin, probably hip hop, meaning there's no reason for it to mean that. I'm just going to assume it's crap with the r removed.
I feel it has more to do with words (and slang) and saying that seem to appear from nowhere...Like for me..the word "canon"...I don't recall anyone ever saying that before..(I'm 56)..At least not that I can recall..Cetainly not in my circles..or anyone I have ever meet say it. Yet I noticed so many people in the reactions I was watching start saying it, despite not hearing it said in reactions before. Now I hear it everywhere on youtube!. It's like everyone suddening learnt a new word..and they were gonna use it!. As if they've been saying it their whole lifes..which they haven't.
"Old Holmes". It's the last That Mitchell and Webb Look sketch, which makes some people a bit sad, but it's another funny take on Sherlock Holmes. React. Stop hiding. Do it.
I think that it just pokes fun at that part of human nature from which religion, fashion trends, hero/celebrity worship, teen age identify forming, peer group dynamics etc etc spring from. Don't think religion was the prime target here TBH
Reminds me of Primary school , when Dr Who was new there were always new words from tv shows , or someone invented one . Must admit I came up with a" stavely makepiece " which sounded like an engineering term - remained in use by those in the know into my teens and confused a few lecturers not in on the joke .
I thought it was based in slang too. I'm also with Nick I don't get it and I don't want to. I'll add that a lot of them probably don't make sense to the kids using it either because of the mentality of pretending to know something because if you don't you're lame.
It's not the fact that people haven't seen or spoken to a god that makes me find it weird, it's more the horrible things he does! Like slavery, genocide and the subjugation of women! I find it weird that people still want to worship him knowing what an insecure monster he is!!
This sketch was obvious satire. If you want to understand it better, try looking into the nature of the first and early ecumenical councils of the catholic church.
Yeah, I think this a bit like how global warming started - say's me sat indoors with two pairs of trousers on, two coats, sat next to a heat pump set to 27 degrees C, that it never reaches and an electric fan heater to keep my legs warm. Someone started a rumour that kids won't know what snow is any more and it caught on, except nobody asked the weather. For 7 months of last year I was sat in an indoor "tent" made of loads of blankets and rugs and I was questioning this particular religion, but I still can't get any of the evangelists to look at page 1856 of their 3000 page "bible" which more or less admits it's a fuss about nothing, but a great money spinner.
Amazing how much depth can be perceived in a small three-minute comedy sketch. Mitchell & Webb are the gift that keeps on giving
My best friend staying today, her dad died. My mum, 90s, he almost reached it! Needed you to cheer me up. Thank you for sharing this ❤👵🇬🇧🙏

"Vectron, why does that name sound familiar?"
Wow, you nailed the joke before you even saw it.

And that my friends is how all religions begin.
Life seems a bit empty now...without Vectron.
By Vectrons Kindly Claw
And thus, a cult was born.
Hail Vectron!
I had a Vauxhall vectron once, oh no wait, it was a vectra, by vectron my memory is playing tricks on me.

Anakin is a pretty cute name already, tbf.
Yes, this is a joke about religion.
you want to believe , so you believe - comfortable self deception

Dave Allan said it best when he was describing the time (as a child) his parents sent him to a monastery
CORPORATE 'vectron.' ''ALL pray and bow your heads to...''

By God er I mean Vectron...................😜
It reminds me of 1984 by George Orwell.
I thought the same thing Nick.

Subtle? There is a version of looking at things that new traditions can quickly become acepted as a fact but in the modern era can be established.

Just what is that tyrannosaurus on your t-shirt trying to grab Jodi😂😂😂❤

It helps to underline the importance of sci-fi names, given 'Chancellor Steve' lacks authority.
What the vectron was that ?
Can you react to Foster Brooks "Drunk airline pilot"? It's jokes, trust
Just add two thousaand years and you have Christianity.
This is about God.

He's no Vectron, that's for sure.
This sketch was obvious satire. If you want to understand it better, try looking into the nature of the first and early ecumenical councils of the catholic church.
It's an object lesson in how a society can mentally align with a cause, regardless of it's merit. A bit like the Woke crowd today.

First!💪🏻
Oh grow up simpleton 🙄
Sick of hearing ‘God’ all the time. Nonsense.
