I also think Jazmine plays a role in this as well. She's not featured often; however, when she is with Hughey she wishes to understand and to learn his thinking. Sometimes, like in the lemonade episode, she doesn't want to in fear that he is right, becuase she knows that he is. Jazmine plays in a large part of thinking in both black and liberal society, we want to learn, to be 'woke', but to do that all the time is hard. To always do actions with consequences in mind is difficult. To be naive is so much easier when you don't see it coming. When we focus on Jazmin going to the movies, she slowly unravels at wanting to fit in but hating the entire experience. This may seem a bit far fetched, but as someone who is also mixed the same way, Jazmine reveals the awkward social need as someone who is mixed to fit in with one race or the other. Jazmine is simply 'Jazmine', but as a child like everyone else wishes to fit in and hasn't learned this lesson yet. I think she also plays in some other things to, but these are the main ones for me.

As a kid I just saw the Boondocks as comedy relief now that I’m older and have seen how the world is the boondocks is a perfect representation of our community.
Back in the day I told an ex of mine how much I loved the symbolism and messaging in both _The Boondocks_ *&* _The Chapelle Show._ She (the ex), who wasn't Black, replied with something like "sometimes I think jokes are just jokes." It was a real eye opening moment for me as a young Black man because it was deadass something I grew up with my family warning me about, that I had always kind of brushed off as an antiquated way of thinking up until that point. Best advice to all young people: "If you think you know more than your elders... *No, you dont."*
The sad part is when Sony took over The Boondocks, like literally owns everything that Aaron Created, the show tanked without him; However. Now that Aaron is coming back, the authenticity will be fucking micro-managed to hell!!
Except it has been touted as a "Re-imagining." John Witherspoon (R.I.P.) is being re-casted by somebody other than his own son J.D. Witherspoon (who, mind you, can do a SPOT ON impression of his father) over reasons that weren't disclosed (J.D. did a video on YT about how the execs for the show didn't want him to play the role of Grandad: channel name is runJDrun). They don't care that much about authenticity it would seem.

@@yaboi_LGK You right. They don't care. The intent is to kill the show in the next season as so many people will find fault with it that we won't watch it. They may turn it into a comedy for white people and if that doesn't work then that's the end of that and the truth has been silenced
This cartoon was one of the best ever made. Frankly, Boondocks is on the Mt Rushmore of ALL satire, not just black satire. It's just fantastic and hilarious. Some of the bits on Boondocks are literally funnier than any other cartoon out there.
Agreed! I remember watching the episode when Ruckus father called him a Mexican. As a grown man i almost pee’d myself. My girlfriend at the time did not like that 😂😂
One thing I like about the Boondocks is its realism. Shows have themes that are good sentiments but this show is actually [edit] authentic in its commentary. This show definitely deserves an award if it hasn’t already.
Good to know. I really thought he was based off of Tom Mesereau. The lawyer who defended Micheal Jackson in the Child Molestation case that he was acquited for. They look alike.
That was an impressive breakdown of an amazing show. I would add that breaking down this show is like peeling an onion, the deeper you go, the more nuanced layers there are and can sometimes bring tears to your eyes.
I'm pretty sure the Wuncler's name comes from the "Once-ler" who is the character from the Lorax who completely strip mines the entire world, while the Lorax is trying to tell him to stop.
It does. Also Wuncler was voiced by Ed Asner. Who alongside Betty White was one of the ONLY non Racists on Mary Tyler Moore. Asner also played a Ship Captain on Roots, his character was so frustrated by the African slaves revolting and killing his men, he actually questions the slave trade and it’s implied that he believes that what they’re doing is WRONG.
Riley is my favorite character. He's a good kid who actually has potential, talent, and a good moral compass. He's just young and often lead astry by culture without any mentors to guide him.

I feel like this video is a little harsh on Tom but that’s me. I always thought it was showing a character disconnected from his heritage. One of my black friends was in the foster system for a while and she was teased in middle school for “not being black” and that really left an impression on me. I thought Tom was a reference to that
I think the video is just wrong in the case of Tom. The Trial of R. Kelly was one of the first episodes and if this was the intention was someone who "betrayed the black community" that episode wouldn't make any sense.
I think its funny how the boondocks only got 4 seasons (3 if we're really being honest) and stuff like the Simpsons, and family guy has been on air for decades now, and family guy is literally disgusting and twisted. And honestly I don't even wanna watch the boondocks reboot because I know it's not going to be the same because the boondocks is my favorite cartoon/satire of all time.
It was only on for 4 seasons because of Aaron McGruder and Sony's relationship. They wanted him to produce episodes faster and he said that he couldn't write them as fast as they wanted.
As a kid the boondocks was funny and entertaining but now that I’m grown I can’t believe the social commentary so expertly portrayed ever flew over my head. This show deserves to be remembered as a classic. The first 3 seasons when McGruder was involved anyway.
Boondocks was to me what fat albert was to people growing up in the 1970s and 1980s representation of black people done right hope the HBO max reboot is good

True... sometimes at the end of an episode you're reminded that whether we're righteous or not... all WE got is each other. Hence, it's why Granddad always put up with Ruckus foolishness.
Season 1 - 3 was the damn truth! I loved how Aaron McGruder took it to the azzes of BET and Tyler Perry - he ruffled some feathers with those episodes; season 4 was crap without him and hopefully, he'll have ultimate say so for the material of the reboot....
The reason this show and the other shows mentioned at the beginning were so damn good is because its so honest about everything even when it makes them look "bad" and still make it funny and we need more shows like these to come back!
wow channels like this rarely are so firm in their stance & rhetoric. there’s no confusion about the impact the show has had on you. no mincing of words. 🥺 it’s beautiful.
I grew up as a rural white kid and finished highschool during the boondocks run. It was a great show in general and also provided a foil to how I already saw the world as I grew up. I was lucky to grow up in a house free of racial hate, but I definitely needed this caricature to challenge the limited world view I had on what I thought was just an urban thing. That show, combined with my later life experiences of moving to the south has repeatedly shocked my world view and better helped me understand the social implications of media, the news cycle, and some of the cultural nuisances of not only the black community, but opened my perception to how several cultures can work within the multi-shaded world we live in. I can only be here to help by giving the opportunity to those that should had it from the start. But I'll damn well do it.
To the people in the comment sections saying she “forgot” every minor character, do y’all expect her to go through a list of every character and make the video an hour long? Lmao
Why make a video like this if you aren’t going to touch on every character that matters? Don’t have to do every single character that appeared in the show, just the ones that matter

@@PhaedraKaRiyma I think it was 100% for the best, I don't think Aaron Mcgruder, at least at the time, had the right perspective to talk about black womens issues and its best that he didn't touch them rather than bring them up and be dismissive of them.
Well there's Jasmine, but she was a very underused, her struggles with her identity as a biracial girl was such a big thing in the comic, I don't get why it's mostly ignored in the show.
@@DaDualityofMan Jasmine is biracial and identifies as such. I'm talking about a black girl or woman character who consistently appeared on the show as a main or supporting character. We MUST stop giving away our intellectual currency! We make everything hot and then sell it for pennies just for it to be ruined. Or even worse, make lots of money for people who could NEVER fully appreciate it.
One of the greatest cartoons ever. Period. The writing and the layering of the satire was so well done that McGruder's brushstrokes were untraceable. That's exactly why the 4th season bombed so hard. Because no matter how tryhard NOBODY could duplicate what he did nobody. It was an achievement in animation, in literature.
Usually I hate videos like this because most of the time it's people looking wayyy to deep into the show, but magruder really made this show so layered with so many intricacies, im glad someone made a video pointing all of it out! Good job!
Honestly, this show is the best representation (and most accurate) portrayal of the different type of people in Black Culture. It shows diversity without having to hammer it into your face. And it's halarious 😂 I can point at a character on the show and relate it to someone I know in real life which makes it that much funnier. 😂😂
Once they changed their anime-style animation in the later seasons and Aaron McGruder initially selling the rights I had to stop watching. It just wasn't the same. And it won't _ever_ be the same without John Witherspoon....Rest In Peace.
I would like to add more about Huey. While everything you said about him was accurate, he does have his flaws. These include a sometimes rigid and uncompromising nature, which can result in isolation and difficulty in forming relationships. His radical views and unwavering stance make it challenging for him to find common ground with others, impeding effective communication and collaboration. Huey's intense focus on social justice can also lead to tunnel vision, causing him to overlook other aspects of life and potential solutions. In the comic strip, this dynamic is portrayed well through Caesar, who is Riley's best friend. While Caesar often agrees with Huey, he is generally less interested in politics and occasionally becomes annoyed that it dominates Huey's conversations.
She did do an excellent job of breaking down the characters. I actually know individuals in real life that are exactly like these characters so there is truth to this. Aaron Mcgruder was far ahead of his time. He would be an interesting individual to work with especially creatively

Kinda relate to that 3rd to last sentence as I'm also mixed.
Ima blaxican (black and mexican) and I do not fully in either group (well the ones around me anyways) and I get told I speak white unless I'm mad and that's when I sound black which is weird but back on topic, it's weird being mixed sometimes because when your parents wanna get ya into their culture you kinda become like a fusion of both that you end up not really being identical or somewhat similar to what you're tryna be

Back in the day I told an ex of mine how much I loved the symbolism and messaging in both _The Boondocks_ *&* _The Chapelle Show._
She (the ex), who wasn't Black, replied with something like "sometimes I think jokes are just jokes."
It was a real eye opening moment for me as a young Black man because it was deadass something I grew up with my family warning me about, that I had always kind of brushed off as an antiquated way of thinking up until that point.
This cartoon was one of the best ever made. Frankly, Boondocks is on the Mt Rushmore of ALL satire, not just black satire. It's just fantastic and hilarious. Some of the bits on Boondocks are literally funnier than any other cartoon out there.

That was an impressive breakdown of an amazing show. I would add that breaking down this show is like peeling an onion, the deeper you go, the more nuanced layers there are and can sometimes bring tears to your eyes.
Great analogy I agree
Yo R.I.P John Witherspoon, he was the original voice actor for Gran dad .

I too really liked message in music of Boondocks theme.

Good job!

Or Charlie Murphy or Ed Asner
Boondocks captured the Afro American dynamic to the max. 100% the best representation of us period
