    I come home from vacation and find a new video from you. Just splendid. I look forward to the Silver Airways and Hispania. When I was in college, a classmate's boyfriend flew Silver and liked them, before he eventually started flying the BA A318s to London City. Great video Phil!

      Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) I'm most of the way through the Silverjet script and looking at things it is a real shame that they didn't make it as I know it would have caused other carriers to up their game and drop their prices, oh well. As part of the "war of the transatlantic biz carriers" I'll be covering the history of the BA A318s too :)

    A lot of work gone into that story Phil. Well done😅 And you seem to have found an airline I havn't done work on😅 but most of the others mentioned in the story had my hands on them. Licenced Engineer with FLS 😊

      Thanks Chris, is that your way of saying you had no part in their many delays? ;) Just kidding of course :)

    • @ChrisEngland-yc4wy
      @ChrisEngland-yc4wy 6 місяців тому +1

      There were a few tech delays🤣 But like you say in the story, we had 12 hours downtime once a week, but by the time it got there we had no time at all. Airtours, Air UK Leisure, My Travel, 24 hour delays were common in the 90’s. STN, MAN, LGW we moved around. 👍

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  6 місяців тому

      Oh indeed, I remember some particularly lengthy delays with my personal best being 36 hours. I do wonder had EU261 existed in the 90s how the airlines would have coped, I think it was only Flying Colours that were largely unscathed (or the least delayed as they repeatedly won "most punctual charter airline" awards) - on a similar note I remember Excel (as we were then) winning some fancy award and then we had a 21 hour delay on the same day.

    Brilliant thank you was keen to know what happened to these. As you say, like most of these companies, bit off more than they could chew.

      @@ExpoAviationFJE was the best airline I've ever served on in two decades as Pursrer; wor 767 was a 200ER though, not a 300 ❤❤

      Yeah I don't know how I mis-read it from my script and didn't notice at the time, I did manage to have it flash on the video with it being a 200ER as I'd spotted it at the last minute.

    I remember Bruce Dickinson used to fly for Astraeus...
    I also remember scanway-tyrkiet eksperten hiring Aurelia as a substitute at one point.
    But the story about their thailand adventure: after they stiffed the hotels the owner said: we are not going baack to thailand. There Is no money to be made.

      Yes he did, I bumped into him once "backstage" at the airport when I was coming in for a flight and he was heading out after one so I didn't want to bother him but he still said "hello" :)

    Excellent video. I used to dispatch FlyJet out of Manchester and it was interesting to say the least. As you've identified, delays were a regular occurrence and par for the course. EB was affectionately named Betsy, she was an old lady with lots of medical problems. I dispatched her last flight out of Manchester and final arrival. I think some of the flight crew went to Silverjet. Happy days working the ground and it had a little bit more job security. I also dispatched Viking, Strategic Airlines, Tor Air, SAGA Airlines, Virgin Sun, Flying Colours, Air Atlanta Icelandic, Air Scandic and many more, all of which are now a distant memory.

      @@ExpoAviation I left aviation in 2018 after 22 years. Massive changes occurred in this time and many airlines came and went. Since I left I never found another industry the same, the same feeling, the same buzz. I still miss it to this day, but my days of 0300 starts, working weekends, bank holidays and Christmas are over, I did it for too long and don't fancy doing it again. I'll always be aviation through and through though, too many Jet A1 fumes inhaled over the years, it'll always be part of me.

      I worked these on the ground at NCL, they were known as "flytech" and sweepstakes were often taken on how long delays might be. Almost as chaotic an airline as Viking, who would ask Ramp Agents to "lose bags" as their MD83s would be too heavy, or SAGA who told a dispatcher that if they didnt get volunteers to offload, the crew would sit there till they ran out of hours.
      Unreal times with some of these airlines!
      Great channel, thoroughly enjoying the memories of these long gone companies!

    Talking about FlyJet’s notorious delays, there’s an episode of Holiday Airport, focused at Larnaca Airport in Cyprus, where a FlyJet flight to Gatwick is delayed over 5 hours I think it was. The poor Olympic Holidays rep had to deal with the fallout of upset and angry passengers.

    • @ExpoAviation
      @ExpoAviation  6 місяців тому +2

      Yeah I've just watched 10 minutes of an episode of that and had to switch it off as my blood pressure rocketed... I remember many years back operating a "rescue" flight picking up another airline's passengers as their plane had gone tech in Turkey and we were supposed to fly back empty, we got absolute earfuls off them for the delay, the change and the lack of food on-board - we should've left them there :/
