What more of a surprise then to do a song from a game I've never touched before as my first super heavy song of year 3? Street Fighter was something I really shied away from in my earlier covers since it's been done so much. I really didn't want this to sound like everyone else's cover of Ken's Theme but I still wanted to keep as much of the original as possible (even if that meant having METAL vibraphones). I even went so far as to try one of those really lame hardcore 808 drops, but it ended up getting pretty much drowned out because the bass is so heavy. Hope this still does the song justice, though. Love this soundtrack and can't wait to do more!
The biggest trick with this cover was the absurd stretches for the chords. I wanted to combine the back melody of the song with the chords and it turned out to be very challenging. I've always hated using power chords all the way through a song so I'm really trying to incorporate a lot more triads and 9 and 11 chords. The bass was tough too but I think the part I was most proud of was that I was able to write a solo that really fit the song better than any of my other ones. It's all about pushing myself because that's the reason I do these videos! Try new things in hopes to get better!

One of the few metal covers that actually keeps the style of the original games' soundtrack because it's not too concerned with making it "more metal".
My main problem with remixes nowadays, not just game and movie soundtracks, but just remixes in general.
Is that they try too hard to be original, for example metal covers add extra riffs, guitar solos mid-song.
Or a dubstep mix of a song will sound like the CD got stuck for half a minute, and then there's usually an obligatory base-drop.
It really pisses me off when people use shitty half-asses remixes in their UA-cam videos, and I'm just sitting here screaming at my screen: "WHY NOT JUST USE THE ORIGINAL?!"

@@trainknut Hi, just wanting to jump in six years later with no knowledge of if you changed your opinion in any way. Why not just use the original? Because the original already exists! Irrespective of hearing a song you like in a different genre, why would you listen to a cover of a song that changes nothing about the structure when the original already did the same structure perfectly fine? Further more, we’re not trying to make music to be used within a game, and as such are not trying to make it loop in exactly the same way. Instead most of us who do game covers are deliberately trying to make an interesting song out of what may be at the longest a minute long loop. Sometimes it’s even shorter, but is treated like a full song with verse/chorus structure. Equally this is why people add solos: to break away from what already exists and make it sort of their own.
Most arrangers, Jules especially, aren’t deliberately trying to disrespect the original material. But rather, out of respect for it, make it their own. I believe that’s Jules’ philosophy when it comes to his covers; the original already exists and does it well, so here’s my take on it. Again, I must reiterate; it’s not in any disrespect for the original material. There’s a very deliberate methodology behind how Jules arranges his covers (or how I do for that matter). It’s very formulaic actually!
