As a cancer survivor, just letting other commenters know that telling us and our loved ones about how you "know someone who died from cancer" is actually VERY UNHELPFUL. It's the last thing we want to hear while trying to survive 😑
Share a success story instead ❤

Girl. I can relate so much with what you’re going through. My mom had thyroid cancer about 17 years ago and survived. Now we recently found out she has breast cancer. I’ve told my parents that I’m not worried until we have a plan in place and we know more of what’s going to happen. My mom fell off a ladder and had x-ray done. That's how they - luckily - found a very aggressive cancer in her lung that is usually not found until it's too late for treatment. She was able to have a surgery to get it removed and then had chimiotherapy. They did an aggressive treatment since the kind of cancer and told her she would lose all her hair very fast and feel basically like shit. Turns out she felt just slightly sick the couple days after treatments and lost none of her hair! The doctors were shocked! I fully believe nothing happens for nothing ❤ good luck to your mom and your family ❤

Much love to you, my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer and given a terminal diagnosis almost 3 years ago now. She has been NED for 2 years now! The unknown is terrifying for sure, and the treatments can be terrifying, but eventually it becomes routine. Horrid, but routine. My mum had chemo, surgery, more chemo and then chemo tablets. She still had cancer after it all but then she was given this drug that kills broken cells before they develop into cancer and also can kill cancer cells and she got rid of it all! Nobody expected that, she was told that she would be able to live with cancer and it would be similar to having HIV, where it's being controlled for an extended time so she won't get better but won't get worse until it starts growing again. She is still on that drug to this day and the side effects are manageable.
Depending on the surgery, I just want to give you some advice. Be very vigilant with keeping it clean because infections can make you feel very sick. If it starts to smell or getting redder and more swollen, seek help as soon as possible.
Sometimes surgery can mess with the nerves in the body, so if she experiences any numbness as it heals, that's not necessarily a bad sign, it can return or it might stay a bit numb from now on.
Also, remind her that her scar/s are awesome, and that it's a mark of a warrior. My mum has no problems with body confidence thankfully, but I know it is a worry for many people. I know it can feel daunting but if her clothes don't cover it, its okay. It's not anything to be self-conscious about. My mum has a scar all the way down the middle of her stomach and she still wears crop tops. I actually think it's beautiful and now over 2 years after the surgery, it doesn't even occur to me that she never had a scar before.
With young children it's so hard because you worry how it might affect them but with my daughter I found that she was very understanding, she wasn't born yet before the surgery but she never looks twice at the scar and she doesn't even seem to care or ask questions. My child is still young, about a year younger than your child but she got through it unfazed. I'm sure your little one will make it through this family event smoothly. I plan to answer any questions that come up as simply and direct as possible, but she hasn't asked any yet.
Also, it might sound odd, but personally I really treasure all the lovely family photos I got while she was getting better and rediscovering herself post surgery. It is beautiful to see how far she has come, how healthy she looks now, and also to have documented her journey of finding out who she was again. All the beautiful wigs, her going out and having fun again, her with my daughter and how happy she is. She is really healthy now but it made us even closer to have gone through this experience, and she is so much more carefree now (other than the fear of recurrence). I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy but I can genuinely say she got a lot of perspective and positive change and strength from her experience. I couldn't be more proud of her.
