The only thing more fun than watching THE STING for the first time is watching someone else watch it for the first time. :-)
You're right. It's almost like watching the movie through new eyes.
22:10. When he says "He's a Dick though" he wasn't calling him a bad name/word - that meaning is fairly new. Back then a "Dick" was simply short for a detective or undercover cop. Like Dick Tracy. It's funny I've watched a couple other reactions of this movie and they all react the same way.
Yeah, I noticed she didn't catch that reference.
When I first got out of the army, I took a job as a private detective, which are sometimes called “private dicks.” A friend of mine knew I was going for the interview, and that I would probably find out immediately if I got the job. Right after I was hired, I called a friend of mine who was waiting for word on the interview. She asked me how it went, and I said “Well, I’m a dick.” She answered, “Oh Paul, don’t say that. You’ll get a job soon!”
By the way, it’s a lousy job, and I was working for the worst possible private investigation firm in the country, it turned out. They never show in the movies how you have to keep a bottle to go to the bathroom because often you’re sitting in a car for 12 or more hours. Three months of that gig was all me and my bladder could take.
Now I'm wondering when it changed meaning to a body part euphemism and then went on to mean "a big jerk". Were they saying that by 1973? Because if they were then it could have been a purposeful double meaning for modern audiences.
@@torgosaves427 there was a bit of a double meaning but it had to get past the censors, so private dick/detective took precedence.
@@torgosaves427 I'm sure it was, but as you may note this film is full of archaic 1930's jargon some of which have different meanings now. It's partly what makes the script so good. The Rocketeer does a similarly good job with 1940's jargon.
One of my favorite movies. Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Robert Shaw, great characters, great dialogue, great twists, all wrapped up in a 1930s ragtime wrapper. It's a masterpiece.
You mean wrapped in an 1890s ragtime wrapper. In actual fact, ragtime music was popular in the 1890s. It was actually big band swing music that was popular in the 1930s. Even though ragtime music is historically out of place for this film's timeframe, its uniqueness still works to set a certain mood and tone that swing music wouldn't be able to. Even with the glaring historical inaccuracy, I still consider this a perfect film.
@@globalmonkey007 Sorry, I didn't mean to imply ragtime was from the 30's, although I understand how the way I worded it gives that confusing implication. When I wrote it, I was thinking about how the aesthetic of the movie draws from the thirties (being set in the 30's) and from ragtime both so I just combined them when trying to sum up the visual and musical aesthetic as the movie's "wrapper". Sort of like if I called Jesus Christ Superstar a biblical rock epic or something like that, but in this instance I can see now it doesn't really work cleanly and I should've just separated them in a more natural way.
The channel is literally named "Popcorn in Bed". How does she not recognize Paul Newman... as in "Newman's Own". Kids these days! LOL
Newman was the headliner. Check out "Winning: The racing life of Paul Newman." He was arguably the biggest star of the second half of the Twentieth Century.

Famous for those blue eyes. He also did stuff besides act, he raced cars, started his own food business that sends all profits to charities. Yes, those Paul Newman pizzas, salsas, pasta sauce are from his company, now run by his daughter. But yeah, "the other guy" triggered some of us.

They were both SO handsome!! Paul Newman was FAMOUS for his piercing blue eyes.

Not only did this film sweep through the Oscars, winning seven out of ten nominations, including Best Picture, it also inspired a renewed popularity in ragtime music and Scott Joplin in particular. This was the second time Newman, Redford, and director George Roy Hill worked together, the first being 1969's "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid".
This film did for Joplin what "O Brother, where art thou" did for American Old Timey music decades later.
Written by William Goldman, the guy who wrote The Princess Bride. Not a bad scribbler.

The only bad thing about this film is that you can only watch it for the first time once.
Even though the 1936 setting feels very "old-timey" to us, when this film was released, that setting was equivalent to a movie today being set in the year 1985!

That's really depressing to think about, because I was a high school sophomore in 1985. OH well, at least the economy was a lot better in '85 than it was in '36, and 2022.
As crazy as that is to think about, here's another: the Matrix is now older than Star Wars was when the Matrix was released.
The ragtime piano music by Scott Joplin was from around 1900, so in a 1936 setting would be like 1980s music in a current movie.
Yeah, but it felt old-timey to us back when it was released, too. Much more change from 1936 to the early 1970s compared to the 1980s to today. And no, don't tell me about the internet.
Paul Newman played Gondorff. A great actor and if you want to see more of him in an all time classic, watch 'Cool hand Luke'.

That's so funny she knew Redford but not him, and then was captivated by him, because he's like...the coolest, most iconic movie star ever. He also originated the idea of using his fame to create a business, put his face on it, and then donate all the profits to charity, hundreds of millions. Which cements him as the coolest movie star ever.

Fun fact: The actor playing Luther is the dad of James Earl Jones, voice of Vader and Admiral Greer from the Jack Ryan movies.

Paul Newman is in my top 5 favorite actors. I met him once by accident in a restaurant. He was such a nice guy. He took the time to talk to my wife and I for about an hour before he had to leave. His wife, Joanne Woodward, was awesome and also a great actor too.

Paul Newman, in my opinion, NEVER made a bad movie. I think he was the best American actor of all time.
He will always be one of the coolest people Never let fame get to him, actually had a charitable organization that ran itself.
This director hit on all cylinders in the 60s to mid 70s, and killed it a few times with both these actors!
Robert Shaw (the bad guy,) was Quint, on Jaws. Robert Redford and Paul Newman are amazing. Search for them seperately. Robert Redford, Jeramiah Johnson was my favorite. Paul Newman "Cool hand Luke" together, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Enjoy, Love your reactions, Sister too

One of the masterpiece films of the 70’s. It just doesn’t get any better than Robert Redford and Paul Newman. Listen to everyone who says you MUST watch “Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid”. You will fall head over heels in love with both of them.
Redford was fine in The Sting, but the Sundance Kid was intended for Steve McQueen and it was a great mistake to cast anyone but McQueen in that role. Newman and McQueen as Butch and Sundance would have been epic.
@@HansDelbruck53 Steve McQueen is great, but I strongly disagree. And Redford wasn’t cast “instead of” McQueen. McQueen was cast but then backed out of the role. So, I think it turned out the way it was meant to turn out. And the chemistry between Redford and Newman is incredible in the film.
@@HansDelbruck53 McQueen was at that stage in his career where his arrogance was becoming petty. I think he would have been cut out of consideration pretty fast due to the movie having two male leads, not just his part. For instance, look at the movie he DID make with Newman, 'The Towering Inferno', where things got so bad they were fighting over who had the most lines of dialog.

@@HansDelbruck53 Couldn't disagree more. The on-screen chemistry between Newman and Redford was off the charts in Butch Cassidy. In particular, Redford's performance as Sundance turned the actor into an A-List superstar. As great as Steve McQueen was, he was a complicated man who often did not work well with his co-stars. He considered Newman a rival at best. If a McQueen/Newman version was produced, I don't think it would have the same magic.
Did she just say of THEE Paul Newman "He's very handsome, too"? That is one of his most beautiful moments on film...I'm glad she noticed!!!
"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" with Steve Martin, Michael Caine, and Glenn Headly is a great "con" comedy that you would love!!!

When Paul Newman read the script for the first time he wrote a note saying "You can't kill Redford there" only to realize he fell for the con as well
I didn't know that. That's hilarious! It's also not surprising, given how good the script is.
Best picture of the year. My favorite movie.
The Sting movie was actually a sting on the audience. I remember watching it in the theatre in the 70's and not untill the very end did everyone know the outcome. And as we were leaving the theatre we were asked by theatre staff not to reveal the ending to the people lining up for the second showing. An absolutely brilliant movie. I have it on DVD and treat myself every once in a while to pick up my spirits almost 50 years later and it still does. Glad you have experienced the same thrill as countless others.
My dad told me that the audience burst out in spontaneous applause at the end. I think he told that to me beforehand and said that this movie has the most surprising end ever. Consequently, when I watched this for the first time, I spent the entire movie thinking about how it would end and wasn't surprised :D I've hated "you'll never see it coming!" type of hyping-up ever since.
@@VilleHalonen i wish there was a kung fu where the hero was suddenly killed at the end w/o warning , it would be shocking like the ending of a certain biker film......but sadly audience only wants an happy ending movie these days (they should remake Big Boss , that movie is about the action so sets arent very important meaning cheap prod cost.....wouldve been funny if Burton remade "Clones of Bruce Lee" , his version would be more horror-esque obviously)
This film beat "The Exorcist" and "American Graffiti" for Best Picture.
And it REALLY hit hard if you had seen (and loved, which if you'd seen it, you loved it) Butch Cassidy. At the end, when Newman and Redford got shot at the end, my Dad yelled out "Not again!"

Gondorf was played by PAUL NEWMAN, one of the biggest stars ever! Check out Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, with Newman as Butch and Redford as the Kid. You'll love it.

One of my favorite lines, "Do you want percentage or flat rate? Meaning does the guy want to be paid a set amoubt or a percentage of whatever they take during the con. When he knows they are up against Doyle Lonagan, he doubts whether they can do it, so he says Flat Rate
Wow, Paul Newman was the most beautiful man to ever grace the screen and you called him the other guy! 3 generations of women in my family could never get enough of that face and charm! My mom and my daughters and I spent lots of movie time watching him!
Paper Moon, also from 1973, is about a con man who teams up with a prococious kid to pull con jobs. This one has a lot of heart, as the two form a bond during their adventures. And this is also a period piece set in the 1930s depression era.
I would be shocked (and incredibly excited) if anyone ever reacted to Paper Moon. It always seems to get lost in the shuffle nowadays, but damn, it was a really really good movie. When The Sting came out, it immediately became my favorite film. I think I watched it about eighteen times in the first year. (Only twice in the theater, the rest on cable TV, which was pretty new at the time.) But as an adult, I've actually come to appreciate Paper Moon even more.

I was thinking more of a My Favorite Year vibe, feel good comedy with a young man meeting an idol/mentor which just happens to star one of the greatest actors of my lifetime in Peter O'Toole.

Check out The Verdict or Absence of Malice. Newman should have won Academy Award for either or both, instead of that silly piece of fluff he won for.

An interesting fact. The black gentleman is Robert Earl Jones who is the father of James Earl Jones better known as The voice of Darth Vader and the Voice of Mufasa in the Lion King
"Sneakers" is another fun Robert Redford movie and " Cool Hand Luke" is another great performance by the late Paul Newman

You absolutely need to watch "The great escape" , it's got everything you love in it. War movie, a gorgeous cast, very funny, very sad, a con of some sort...i hope it's in the future!

I would also suggest Kelly's Heroes with Clint Eastwood. A great cast in that one too.

The old-time music is a ragtime style written by Scott Joplin (born in 1868). The intro is named 'The Entertainer' written in 1902.
Redford and Newman also star in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the story of the old west outlaws which for some odd reason gave us the Academy Award winning Best Song Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head. Another "period piece" comedy is My Favorite Year set against live TV in the 1950s.
Excellent recommendation. They made that one before The Sting. They have great onscreen chemistry - kind of like George Clooney and Brad Pitt

Seen this in the movie theater in 73 as a 14-year-old. They got everybody ! Just everybody ! That was the Sting, everybody falling for that Con at the end.
The film was a multi Oscar winner. It’s one of the best crime films of all time. The music was inspired by the great Scott Joplin.
My parents took me to see this when it was new. It was my first time hearing any Ragtime Jazz, such as "Maple Leaf Rag" by Scott Joplin. It added so much to the fun of the movie.
By the mid-1970s, Paul Newman, the elder of the two stars, was a professional-level car racer. When you shop for groceries, it is his face and name on the "Newman's Own" brand of food and other products. He founded this company to raise money for charity and it still does so, many years after his death.
Quite simply, "the Sting" is a truly great movie.......nothing more needs be said. Newman, Redford, Shaw...result? Masterpiece!!
My favorite movie. I have yet to get tired of seeing this movie.

Paul Newman (the older guy) is absolutely iconic. Butch Cassidy, Cool Hand Luke, Cat on a Hot Tim Roof,The Hustler etc etc etc. He was also a race car driver, WW2 vet and made a successful line of sauces. An absolute baller.
You can't list the greatest Paul Newman movies without mentioning HUD. Classic film that has aged so well.
Apparently, someone bought his Rolex watch at auction for $17.8 million!!

the other is Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid. I’d encourage you to check it out as it’s a classic film.

Its probably been mentioned, but Doyle Lonnegan was portrayed by Robert Shaw, who also played Quint in Jaws.
For more of him, there's also the 1974 version of "Taking of Pelham 1-2-3", along with Walter Matthau.
The advertising at the time was, ".. this time, they might get away with it." Which referred to how Redford and Newman did not get away with it in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Paul Newman and Robert Redford...the most iconic, incredible, handsome leading men that ever lived. There are so many good moves between them that you should watch.
No doubt Redford is a fine actor. But at the end of the day, Paul Newman (“the other guy” with the bluest eyes) was a far superior actor. You need to watch The Verdict ( a courtroom drama) or a fan favorite, Cool Hand Luke.
BTW, the music is of the genre called Ragtime. Its composer was a true national treasure named Scott Joplin.

You’ve acknowledged that Robert Redford was the Brad Pitt of his day. Well, Paul Newman was the Brad Pitt a decade earlier. My favorite Newman movie is Cat On A Hot Tin Roof with the amazing Elizabeth Taylor. It’s soooooo good.

Out of all my favorite films that Cassie hasn't watched yet, The Sting is at the very top of the list. If you know somebody that hates this movie, cut them out of your life immediately. We all have our opinions but this is THE STING we're talking about! It's impossible to not have a good time with this timeless masterpiece! There is no better on-screen duo than Paul Newman and Robert Redford. It's such a shame they only made two flicks together. If you're not sold on westerns, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid is the answer. 💙🍿📽
I was living in Hollywood, California when this came out I was in 7th grade, and I won a contest in my school . The prize was 2 tickets to the Premier of this film
Yes, it's a shame that this star pairing occurred only twice in this world (hopefully, in Heaven, anything one desires can happen any number of times); but, evidently, no writer on the surface of the Earth was ever again able to come up with a screenplay, whether intended for them or not, that could please both of them. And if that's actually the case - considering the odds - then, we were lucky beyond belief to get the pair of them together twice. 😎

Robert Redford in Jeremiah Johnson is amazing, also one of his best roles ever, was a 90's movie called Sneakers. Incredible cast.

This was a huge hit. I saw it in a packed movie theater when I was about 13. Redford and Paul Newman were the big stars at the time. At the end of the movie nobody got up to leave. When the credits stopped everybody sat in their seats an applauded like it was a play and the case was their to be cheered. Only time I saw that happen at a movie
See Cassie, people do applaud in the movie theater. That is, of course, if it's worth it. I saw it happen at the end of "Dream Girls" and Star Wars. You know a movie is good when people come out of the theater, get right back on the ticket buying line (usually circling the block - hence Blockbuster) - and get back on the ticket holders line. Sadly, those days are gone. That, my dear, was the 70s.
You may recognize Robert Shaw, the victim of the con, as the boat captain in the movie: “Jaws”, an excellent character actor!

@@richardb6260 They even say it in modern movies too like in "Se7en". When the SWAT team finds the sloth victim tied to the bed, they yell "Dicks" calling for the detectives (Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt).
Your reaction at the big reveal was exactly the same as audiences in the theater when this film came out. The whole theater gasped when they got shot and cheered when they saw it was a trick.
If you want more Paul Newman and Robert Redford, you can't go wrong with "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid". You'll love it (watch it with Carly). For Paul Newman on his own, I suggest "Cool Hand Luke" and "Slap Shot". For more Redford, I love "The Great Waldo Pepper". I also think you would love his movie "The Way We Were" with Barbra Streisand.
It's great that you've been enjoying older films. One that I love that doesn't get enough attention is "The Reivers" from 1969. It will introduce you Steve McQueen, who was a big star in the 60s and early 70s. McQueen is probably best known for the films "Bullitt" and "The Great Escape" (both good future choices).
Another great conman movie is "Diggstown" starring James Woods.

Paul Neuman and Robert Redford were Hollywood Royalty and absolute Rockstars. Neuman was also a might good racecar driver and Redford was also an acclaimed Director.

I'm sure a thousand others will say the same thing, but to see Paul Newman, (RIP)famous these days for his salad dressing, and Robert Redford, who runs the Sundance Film Festival, again you have to see "Butch Cassidy" (Newman) "and The Sundance Kid" (Redford), hence the Sundance Festival. It is different, it's a Western, but still highly entertaining.
If you want to see Paul Newman in his prime then you need to watch "The Hustler" (1961).
Great movie.
Have you noticed how hostile the city sets are? Run-down houses, alleyways with rubbish, cheap diners, "Hoovervilles" under the elevated tracks - its a real dystopia. For me, the highlight is the chase/dance on the station roof, and the fall into a shanty town... The contrast with the jaunty ragtime music is massive.
Don't be embarrassed that they got you. They got all of us. I saw it when it first came out and had the same gob-smacking reaction at the end.

Paul Newman (Henry Gondorff) besides being an amazing actor, was one of Hollywood's bggest philathropists. His "Newman's Own" food line has raised tens of millions of dollars for charity, and still does years after Paul died. He was also married to one of Hollywood's most celebrated actresses, Joanne Woodward in one of Hollywood's longest lasting marriages. He also played Butch Cassidy opposite Redford's Sundance Kid in 'Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid' written by William Goldman (The Princess Bride).
Robert Shaw (Doyle Lonnergan) was als0 Quint in 'Jaws'. Another great Shaw film..."A Man For All Seasons' as a young King Henry VIII.
This film was the first Best Picture Oscar winner that was produced by a woman, Julia Phillips, who would be nominated again for Steven Spielberg's 'Close Encounters Of The Third Kind'.
The music for this was adapted by Marvin Hamlisch, who won two other Oscars for music besides the Oscar he won for this on the same night. The other Oscar winning music was for another Redford movie...'The Way We Were' with Barbra Streisand (Best Score & Best Song). Three Oscars, two films, one night!
The guy with the "Connery vibe" is Robert Shaw and he did work with Connery in a film called "From Russia with Love", which is a Bond film.
The actor who played Luther, Robert Earl Jones, was the father of James Earl Jones. I met Robert Redford at a Celtics game in 1975.
The director, George Roy Hill, directed Paul Newman and Robert Redford before in Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid. He also directed Redford in The Great Waldo Pepper and with Newman in the Comedy Slap Shot, which is a movie that I always have to watch whenever my beloved Boston Bruins get eliminated from the playoffs.
Lonnegan, the guy you didn't like, was played by Robert Shaw. He also played Quint, the crazy shark hunter, in Jaws.
And played Henry VIII in A Man For All Seasons. Such an incredible actor.

If you do a sports movie again you should do "The Natural" (same time period) starring Robert Redford. Another great movie with Reford playing a mountain man in the 1800's is "Jeremia Johnson".

His greatest role was possibly "The Hustler."

There are a ton of great Robert Redford movies. I highly suggest 1992's "Sneakers". Not only do you get Redford, you also get the late, great Sidney Poitier, Mary McDonnell, Dan Aykroyd, David Strathairn, River Phoenix and James Earl Jones. Great cast, great plot - tense and funny. You will love the cons in that movie as well.
Sneakers is always a good watch. And speaking of great Robert Redfort movies, Brubaker is also a must watch if you ask me.

Sneakers came out 2 years before I started college, and I was already hugely into its subject matter. That movie was 25 years ahead of its time, and it inspired me.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford is a genuine classic and an absolute must. It's directed by the Director of The Sting and has very much the same vibe but it's a lighthearted, charming, romantic, sometimes moving but altogether delightful western; kinda like The Sting with horses! ;)
100% try Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance kid with Robert Redford and Paul Newman legands of the film industry. Both are up there with my favourite films! Try it 👌🏼
This was my dad’s favorite film. As per his request we played the Sting Soundtrack at his funeral and everyone gave the “nose flick “. Great memories! My dad eventually got to meet Paul Newman and became friends. He always said Paul Newman was the nicest guy he ever met!

Paul Newman was THE male Hollywood star from the 50s through early 80s. These 2 also did Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid! And Paul did my all time favorite sports movie, Slapshot!!
My great uncle knew Paul Newman. They worked together on the film "Hud" which starred Newman, Patricia Neal, and Melvyn Douglas.
The great Robert Shaw played the menacing Doyle Lonagahn. You may recognize him as Quint from Jaws.

Shaw's limp in this movie was real. A week before filming began, he tore the ligaments in his knee while playing handball. The loose-fitting suits popular in the 1930's helped him hide the knee brace he had to wear.
Perfection! Such a great reaction to an all-time classic. Rewarding to watch someone get to experience it for the first time.

The other guy playing opposite Robert Redford was one of the Greatest actors in cinema history, Paul Newman. He was a Titan and played in so many incredible movies and dominated the box office for years and decades!! Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Hud, The Towering Inferno and so many more great films!!!

I saw this movie in 1973. I loved it. This was the first movie I saw that got an ovation in the theater.
Fact: Charles Durning, who played Lt. Snyder, was an Army veteran who served at Normandy in 1944 and the Battle of the Bulge.

Wow. You need to see more Paul Newman movies. One of the great actors of all time. He was a huge favorite with women, but he was also married to actress JoAnne Woodward for like a million years. He has done so many great movies. You really need to dive into Paul Newman's work. The Hustler. Cool Hand Luke. He received the best actor Oscar for The Color of Money in which he costarred with Tom Cruise. His wife was also an Oc]scar winner. Besides acting, he was a director, he and JoAnne gave and raised huge amounts of money for charity. After starring in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with Redford, Paul started the Hole in the Wall Org. which ran camps and raised money for sick kids. He started a line of food products called Newman's Own including salad dressings, pasta sauces, popcorn, salsas and other things and to this day (He passed in I think 2008) the profits from Newman's Own all go to the Hole in the Wall Org. The profits from all those products always did go to the charity. He was also a race car driver for a time. I don't know where you stand on movie musicals, but if you enjoy them, be sure to try Guys and Dolls (also a period piece), and maybe The Music Man or My Fair Lady. Those are not Newman films, but they're amazing. Have fun!
