If you like Harrison Ford, you really should watch “Witness”, a huge hit for him from 1985, and a lesser known, but amazing thriller from 1988, called “Frantic”. You would love him in both films.
Witness is my favorite Harrison Ford movie. Best movie kiss. "You be careful out among the english." Back in 1988 my friends cave me a Frantic film poster Framed for my birthday. I still have it.
I recall seeing this in the theater in 1992. It’s a great film. The scene that stays with me is the SAS commando raid on the terrorist camp in North Africa. We see it primarily the way most of us saw the first Gulf War, barely a year prior: via video. When the one guy sipping from a coffee cup smugly says “That is a kill...” (just like many civilians did while watching the war like it was a ballgame or video game), we immediately see Ryan’s reaction to this. Ryan has seen combat, and he knows how deadly it is to perform a raid like this. It’s not something to be taken lightly. I always thought that was a wonderful little bit of social commentary within the picture.
That is a reminder of how cutting edge all of this was at the time, and Tom Clancy brought tactics like that into the mainstream. We are all more savvy about the satellite imagery and bomb-view videos now after the wars and every other movie and TV show now.
Great movie. Love the dialogue especially this exchange: "You're not gonna make me wear a rubber, are you? The Church says wearing one of them's a sin darling." "So is this, darling."
You know, as much as we all dive into films (and UA-cam videos reacting to films) as an escape from life, there's only so much they can do. You're human, I'm human, sometimes the world is awful and it's okay to say so. Kudos on your intro, said it all very well.
Yes, someone can call an operator and request an emergency interruption, or could. My dad use to do it in the early '90s, late '80s. The operator would cut in and tell you who was requesting to interrupt the call and you could decline it. Anyway, "The Hunt for Red October" and "Patriot Games" are the closest Tom Clancy adaptations. The rest have major changes. Also, "Patriot Games" actually takes place about two years before "The Hunt for Red October" even though the book was written after it as well. I just realized this opened exactly thirty years ago tomorrow, 6/5/1992, and I was there seeing it with my uncle.
Ah yes, the emergency breakthrough call. Back in 1987 a girl I worked with and dated would be talking on the phone to each other and on two occasions there was an emergency breakthrough call to her from our district manager. Turned out she was cheating on me seeing him on the side. Its funny now...
@@unropednope4644 I remember a lot being different in the end, including Jack Ryan flying down there in the backseat of an F-14. There was more regarding the people taken prisoner at the beginning.
The Paddy O'Neil character was played by Richard Harris, who was also in Unforgiven and Gladiator. He is also known for portraying Albus Dumbledore in two Harry Potter films before passing away in 2002 and being replaced in the franchise by actor Michael Gambon. Among his children is celebrated actor Jared Harris.
One of his most astonishing roles was his portrayal of Cromwell but the irony is massive. Yep. Richard Harris marvelous talent. Sean Bean is also legend tier. Harrison Ford makes this look easy and we have Samuel Jackson and James Earl Jones and it keeps going. So much talent in one movie.
When the IRA gunmen go to Kevin's house (6:28 in this video), the thing he's watching on TV is 'Harry's Game', a hugely respected British TV drama series about the NI 'Troubles' that aired in 1982. The beautiful sad music for the series was by Irish band Clannad and became an instant hit. It couldn't have been more perfect to capture the sense of haunted, brooding tragedy that hung over NI in those days.
I was a nine year old kid in the states when this movie came out and Clannad was like magic sauce to my ears - have listened to 3 or 4 of their album off and on ever since.
You probably recognize Sean (Sean Bean) as Boramir fro Lord of the Rings, or Ned Stark from Game of Thrones. Fun fact, the old Irish guy is Richard Harris, the OG Dumbledore from the first two movies.
Looking forward to your reaction to "Clear and Present Danger" as the movie (and the book where it was based from) introduced two characters, John Clark and Domingo Chavez. The former will be given the codename "Rainbow Six" in the Clancyverse of novels. The attempt on the British Royal Family members was based off the actual assassination of Louis Mountbatten in the late 1970s when he visited Belfast in the middle of "The Troubles", the uncle of the late Prince Philip. In the case of "Patriot Games", they were saved by Jack Ryan. Coolest thing about this movie is that Harrison Ford and James Earl Jones "reunited" 9 years after the Return of the Jedi. 20:24 Doesn't that remind you of Blade Runner when Deckard saw a picture of a replicant hidden in the background? 23:24 Before ISR drones became a ubiquitous part of warfare (including the current Ukraine invasion), live feed intelligence satellites, when at the right geolocation, would be able to deliver real time feed of operations conducted by CAG (Delta Force), DEVGRU (SEAL Team 6), JTF2 (yes they're Canadian), and SAS (legendary) and sanctioned by their respective governments. In this case this is a simple covert direct action op by SAS operators to kill the IRA camp in Libya. Libya during Ghaddafi's time had been harboring terrorist groups from all around the world in the 70s till the turn of the millenium when he wanted his country to go "legit". 26:23 "Hostage Rescue at Quantico." Yes they're with the FBI and trained with CAG as they're both tasked with HR. Also in Quantico are the FBI Training Academy and the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School. Must be where Jack Ryan started his Marine career (can someone who read the Jack Ryan books confirm that? Thanks!).
I think the assasination attempt was more like the murder of MP Airey Neave, who was blown up by a car bomb planted by the INLA as he left the Houses of Commons in March 1979. Lord Louis Mountbatten was also murdered in August 1979, but he was blown up by a bomb attached to his fishing boat by the IRA. three other people on the boat, aged 14, 15 and 83 were also killed, and three others seriously injured.
The attempt was based on the attempted kiddnapping of Princess Anne where a crazy man stopped her car, shot her body guard and tried to get her out of the car. Thankfully he couldn’t get into the car before police and palace guards arrived. As well as the mountbatin incident where he was blown up in a boat with his daughter, her husband and their twin sons. So he just switched Anne for Charles and Diana in the book and made the assassin ira
Ireland is made up of 32 counties, after the war of independence the new Irish Republic was made up of 26 counties, with the remaining 6 counties remaining part of the United Kingdom. The 6 counties are made up of people who wish to remain part of the United Kingdom and those who wish to join the Irish Republic. This has led to a series of conflicts that gave rise to a number of armed groups on both sides, the largest being the Provisional IRA. Their political wing, Sinn Fein, worked to raise funds in the US among the Irish American Diaspora.
That's a good summary of the long, complicated story in a small space. On a technical point though, after the war of independence in Ireland, the southern 26 counties were officially 'The Free State of Ireland' (established 100 years ago this year) until 1937 when a new constitution was enacted, and the title was changed to just 'Ireland' until 1949 when Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth to formally become the Republic of Ireland.
Vastly over simplified but it's always worth remembering just how much America funded terrorism against its closest ally for the best part of 60 years. Then Saudi funded, American trained terrorists got their hands on a couple of aeroplanes and suddenly it wasn't cool any more.
@@madpaduk Yeah, then Bush and Blair invaded Iraq. Killed thousands of civilians. But hey, only Brit lives matter. It's not as if the British Government wasn't sponsoring Mad Johnny Adair and other loyalist nutjobs in Northern Ireland
In the books, Patriot Games takes place before The Hunt for Red October. In the movies, Alec Baldwin and a Harrison Ford might be the same version of the character, but Ben Afleck, Chris Pine, and John Krasinski are all separate versions.
Movie wise, this takes place several years after Hunt for Red October. Jack left the CIA and they want him to come back. In the book series, Patriot Games is chronically the debut of Jack Ryan and the events in London are what cause the CIA to recruit him (he had worked for them before, but only temporarily). Great books, btw.
Yeah in the book's chronology, Patriot Games happened before Red October, and Ryan is a hero to all people and military personnel of the UK, which allows him to very effectively get British support to capture Red October.
The WERE good books. Jeeze, and talk about time travel...Langley looks so different with all the development gone. Two full parking lots are missing, lol.
I much prefer the order of the books too. It makes the way the questions are answered in court about the cia much more meaningful. Robbie Jackson is much younger looking them in the movie too being a pilot i think they are both 30. The books also have a reason for them to go after the Ryans other than revenge.
Cassie, I discovered your channel by accident around the start of the year and am pretty sure I've now seen almost all of your reactions, so thank you so much for creating this. Viewing these movies through your innocent eyes is an uplifting experience. Reflecting on the awful events of the last few weeks and seeing how it has clearly affected you reaffirms what any of your fans know, that you really are a beautiful human being. Dont ever change x
This really takes me back. My Father used to rent the basement apartment right outside USNA Gate 3...where Jack saw the guy buy the newspaper before getting attacked. A lot of the scenes surrounding that section of the movie were really filmed on location in Annapolis, MD. It makes the movie that much more special when you've walked and driven on those streets.
In the book, the ending climax is much more epic and actually involves the Naval Academy. Ryan and the others escape his house by boat, and they actually make a mad dash to the Academy for safety, and when Sean Miller's party shows up, they are ambushed by Ryan, Robbie, Charles, US Marines and USNA Midshipmen at the shoreline.
I hear you. Until early 2017, my uncle used to work there as an engineering technician. He scored some early tickets to a private screening which he then gave to my parents months before it hit theaters. My mom was still pregnant with me at the time. Said screening happened in August '91. I came in February '92 (Annapolis born by the way.) It hit the cinema in June of the same year.
My dad was enlisted navy for a couple years in Vietnam, and my grandfather made chief, so it was in the family already. But I was nine when this movie came out and I think I went to the Naval Academy because of this movie. '04 graduate. I almost never used Gate 3 for whatever reason (I think it was closed during that time or something), but on the rare occasions I did I always thought of the movie. Ended up only doing a couple years in the reserves after graduating - Navy had a big surplus. But yeah, this movie is why I went. I love that town. Those years were magic. Hard as hell. But magic.
If the SAS (Special Air Service) have said it's done you really don't need confirmation. When my Uncle was in the army his base was informed that it would be part of an SAS training mission and would be infiltrated that night. The guards were tripled, the whole base put on high alert. Nothing happened. In the morning the guards went off duty and went to get some refreshments from the mess. They found 4 blokes sat in the mess eating bacon sandwiches. When they were asked who they were they just handed over ID showing themselves to be SAS. It was later discovered that two guards were found tied up in the laundry, a guard dog had a new FIDO dog tag, and the base commander found a note on his desk that said "thanks for the training. You should try making it difficult next time!" . I only have my Uncle's word for this but in 20 years the story never changed and he had no reason to lie.
"What was the IRA's goal or mission?" There are more complexities, but at its core, they wanted Northern Ireland to break from the United Kingdom and rejoin with Ireland.
Yeah. Initially, they were formed to gain independence from Britain back during the 1910s and 1920s but they wanted the entirety of Ireland free and reunited. However, Northern Ireland supports being with Britain, so the IRA infiltrated and committed attacks against British officials with car bombs. There was large unrest between the two regions called "The Troubles".
@@rithvikmuthyalapati9754 It'd be fair to mention the RUC, UVF (along with any other Ulster-related acronyms), and the British army. It's not a one-way street.
"The Hunt for Red October" was Tom Clancy's first book, but takes place after the events in "Patriot Games." In Red October there are a couple of references to "the incident with the terrorists" but they don't expound on it at all.
I never saw this movie but I did appreciate your intro Cassie. My thoughts and prayers are with those families that were affected by all these recent shootings. It's very sad and tragic for sure. It's insane times we live in but I'm glad you created a channel Cassie. It's an escape from reality and your channel helps us have fun. Harrison ford is a great actor and is also one of my favorites as well. I might watch Patriot Games in the future. Don't ever change Cassie. You have a pure heart and your channel is great and it's entertaining funny and honest.
FUN FACT. The cut over Sean Bean's eye that Harrison Ford gave him at the end of the fight scene was real. If you watch his other films, you can see he still has the scar from this scene.
I hope you react to *Clear and Present Danger* next. It is a significantly better film, imo. That said, I can’t wait to watch you react to this! Starting right… now!
I like the C&PD book better and the theme is better too. I'm not one to care about the British fascination with their royalties. Having said that, most critics didn't like C&PD as much as PG.
15:58 the guy talking on the TV is Richard Harris, Dumbledore in the first 2 Harry Potter movies and his son Jared Harris is Valery Legasov in Chernobyl
To anyone who liked this movie I strongly recommend reading the book it's based on. Many key scenes are so much better in the book, the trial and the scene where he confronts that IRA guy in the bar to name only two... And in the original book the Royal he saved actually was Prince Charles with Family :D
The scenes that didn’t make the movie are great as well. The queen sending him a note at the hospital, the help the terrorists get in America. Book is so much better. The first 3 movies were fine representations and then just go down hill quick after that
One does not simply walk into Jack Ryan’s house. No explanation needed when you switch the actor to Harrison Ford. Everyone just understands: Ooo they got Harrison Ford! Btw Clear & Present Danger is one of the all time greatest movies, not only among Jack Ryan films. You can watch it over and over and keep getting new things out of it. Never gets old. Also you would love Regarding Henry.
When it comes to people’s favorite Jack Ryan film, it’s usually either The Hunt for Red October or this film. For me, Red October’s my favorite, but Patriot Games does come in at a pretty close second.
@@texashookem22 Really none of them are bad, but I agree that Sum of All Fears does get overlooked, though yeah, Affleck’s Russian does leave a lot to be desired.
Yeah, Sum of All Fears is right up there. I might give it more lasting appeal than Patriot Games. And as to bad Russian, I worked with some exchange students from Ukraine and Georgia back in the '90's and they were disgusted with the Russian in Red October. They said they had trouble even figuring out what Sean Connery was trying to say.
Here's a fun fact for you. In the novel that this is adapted from, the people Ryan rescues are not lesser known Cousins in the Royal Family, but actually the Prince and Princess of Wales (Charles and then-alive Diana). Also in the books' chronology, Patriot Games takes places before Hunt For Red October.
It ends up depicting Lord Mountbatten but he survives not only to show how "indispensable" americans are to the world at large but also to prevent any possibility of diplomatic problems.

According to Gates McFadden, who played Jacks wife in Hunt for Red October, they were recast because Baldwin wanted to much money. That's what she told on a Star Trek convention that I went to some years ago.
That couldn’t have been true. Baldwin was a newcomer and Red October was his breakout hit. There is no way he was asking for more than Ford, who was a well established star by this point.
Baldwin wanted 9 million, the producers didn't think he was worth it . They always wanted Harrison for Jack Ryan. Harrison didn't want to do Red October, he wanted to do Presumed Innocent instead at the time. But now Harrison wanted to play Jack Ryan. So the producers paid Harrison 18 million because they felt he was worth it.
Actually, it wasn't Baldwin's salary as to why he was conveniently pushed off the film; because of his commitment to do a Broadway Play with Jessica Lange. I was there.
The part about him not being in the CIA anymore was inserted to deal with some differences between the book and the movie. In the book timelines, the book precedes the Hunt for red October even though that was published first. In the movie timeline, the hunt for red October happens first… he leaves the CIA at some point… And then the movie patriot game occurs.
I'm glad this was reacted to. I never got a chance to see the entire thing all the way through. "The Hunt for Red October" is one of my very favorite movies, so I do lean towards Baldwin as my favorite Jack Ryan. Like Cassie, I thought the secretary was a bit obvious. However, the North Africa location was a good twist.
Muammar Gaddafi in Libya was open about his support of the IRA. They were supplied with weapons from Libya, but some shipments were intercepted by authorities in Ireland or England.
Not only a plot twist, but (back in the day and the original novel) partially a real element about the growing globalization of organizations that were once considered "very local to really be taken seriously". A subplot of the film is the idea of what would happen if such ruthless operatives (like those the IRA had) ever decided to operate in the United States (an element the film didn't include was the support of... some Black Panther like organization to get Sean and his team into the US and attack the house of Ryan). Clancy imagined, back then, that if all those who think they are fighting a just revolution suddenly decided to cooperate... no border would be enough to contain violence.
You asked the question about the mission of the IRA. They wanted to free Ireland from British rule and reunify Ireland. Ireland was partitioned between the North and South and the border was militarized back in 1921. The northern part of Ireland remained part of the United Kingdom. There was also a religious component to the conflict - the North was more Protestant (due to immigration from the UK) and the south was Catholic - however there were still Catholics in the north who were persecuted. A negotiated peace settlement was reached in 1998. The border was demilitarized and the IRA disbanded. With the UK leaving the European Union there was fear that "the Troubles" as they were called might start again because the border was once again going to allow somewhat restricted trade and flow of people. Northern Ireland may choose to leave the UK and rejoin with Ireland but that is still not likely at this point.
I think I have read every Tom Clancey book. Very detailed in every way as a writer. Great rabbit hole to wander down. The films and videogames are fantastic. I can remember the first Rainbow Six game on PC. Just couldn't get enough of it.
I love the atmosphere of this movie, so full of intrigue and suspense...I would like you to react to L.A Confidential, which is full of that dark cinema of yesteryear, I can assure you that you'll love it!
One thing you need to realize is that it's fairly common to recast characters. Sometimes the actor isn't available, sometimes the actor demands too much money; sometimes the actor is tired of the role & wants to do other movies. It's commonly accepted that it's the same character. In dramas set in "the real world," fantasy concepts like the multiverse don't exist. The multiverse is only pertinent in scifi that acknowledges the concept (like the Star Trek franchise) & in comic books. It's a perfect fit in the MCU because Dr Strange was magically visiting other realities since at least the 1970s, since he'd rescued Clea (a minor character in his comic in the 70s) from an alternate reality.
6:10 That guy's name is Patrick Bergin who played a very good role in a movie that came out a year before this film called 'Sleeping With The Enemy' of which he stars along side Julia Roberts. I think you'd get a thrill from seeing that one.
As a kid, during the early 1960's, my family lived in Annapolis, Maryland, and we spent a lot of time around the Naval Academy, I was even friends with of a son of the Navy Basketball coach, we were on the same Biddy League basketball team. So to see the streets I used to walk on, getting shot up, and Highway 50, where Jack's wife and daughter had their run in with Sean Bean, and went past the turn off for our house, it all hit home the first time I watched this movie. And today brought it all back. Tom Clancy is a master story teller, it doesn't matter who is playing Jack Ryan, it's going to be intense, and really good.
This was a great reaction! Huge hugs to you, Cassie. The madness in Texas is extremely heartbreaking. Glad you were able to enjoy your work for a little while.

I appreciate the intro you made. It’s a difficult time and everyone is at each other’s throats over it unfortunately. Thanks for continuing with the videos. More love from everybody, less hate!
I can understand people being 'at the throats' of the Texas politicians that did nothing to prevent last week's massacre, but made it possible instead, and are already doing nothing to prevent the next one, when the whole nightmare could be ended overnight, like it was ended in multiple other civilized countries after they had just one gun massacre. Those politicians in Texas should never have a moment's peace whenever they dare to show their faces in public until they do something to protect the children in their schools. Canada is lucky to have the leadership that they do: they already took action there to prevent similar massacres in Canada, even though last week's horror didn't happen there.
@@Curraghmore Canada is lucky not to have a bill of rights? LOL. Pathetic. Great reaction as usual Cassie! If you'd care to dig deeper into movies about Northern Ireland, The IRA and The Troubles (as they are referred to by those living over there) I'd recommend the movie 1971. It's about a British soldier who finds himself alone in Belfast after getting separated from his fellow soldiers and has the navigate through "enemy territory". If you do ever watch it, you would be wise to turn on closed caption so you can understand a lot of the dialog.
Harrison Ford & Calista Flockhart have a ranch near Jackson Hole , Wyoming where Ford has been involved as a pilot in helicopter rescues. Hence he is a hero in real life as well as on screen.
Great reaction as usual!! Yes, Vader, Han Solo and Mace Windu in a different film other than Star Wars. Very cool! The old guy from the I.R.A which actually means Irish Republic Army is Sir Richard Harris. He was the Cesar in Gladiator. I know you are a Harrison Ford fan. I recommend you check out a movie he did in 2015 called The Age of Adaline. It will not disappoint you. It's right up your alley.
i missed the live premiere. Did anyone point out that the IRA head was Richard Harris? a.k.a. Dumbledore, a.k.a. Priest from COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, a.k.a. English Bob from UNFORGIVEN?
At the time of "The Troubles" the IRA was heavily supported by a lot of Americans who had Irish ancestry, one of the main reasons they were so well funded. You might be interested in the movie The Devil's Own starring Harrison Ford who plays an Irish-American Policeman who takes in a lodger (Brad Pitt) who's in America to buy some missiles for the IRA.
The order of titles in this case is Patriot Games, Red October, and later A Clear and Present Danger. Ryan was an analyst for the CIA before becoming a professor at Annapolis - Naval Military Academy. In Red October there is a line in the book that refers to him as Sir Jack.
Sean Bean was incredible in the TV show Sharpe. I highly recommend it! Also, for your personal reading time, ANY of the truly unique, thorough, gripping, and intriguing stories of the LEGEND that went by the name of Tom Clancy is always a good read.
After seeing "The Sting", you might want to see Robert Redford's CIA thriller "Three Days of the Condor". When I think about it, his character has a lot of similarities to Jack Ryan.
When my dad was in the Marines he was stationed in Annapolis during the time of filming this movie. He got to meet Harrison Ford when they filmed the scene at 13:40 my dad said he was a pretty chill guy had a good sense of humor.
Great film, great reaction! The old IRA guy was Dumbledore in the first Harry Potter film, among many other fine roles. The psychotic one you may remember as Boromir in the Lord of the Rings movies. If you want to see a rare Harrison Ford film, which many of your subscribers may not have seen, you should seek out Regarding Henry, from 1991. Critics panned the film as too sentimental, amongst other complaints, but almost all praised Harrison Ford's acting as Henry. I think you would enjoy it overall. Harrison Ford is very good in this somewhat different role for him.
Seriously, come on. It's Richard Harris.... This Sporting Life, Camelot, Cromwell, A Man Called Horse, The Field. Kind of a shame to be remembered merely as the first Dumbledore. Wrestling Ernest Hemingway is a great film of his, with Robert Duvall, Shirley McLaine, and Sandra Bullock just before she broke out.
The old IRA guy is Richard Harris. He played Dumbledore in the first 2 harry pooter movies. The bad guy who wants revenge is Sean Bean, Boromir in "lord of the rings." The little girl is Thora Birch, she was in several movies including "American beauty."
This one got me into Tom Clancy, for sure. But yeah, Red October and Clear and Present Danger get more rewatch from me. :D Love that you're doing them! Sum of All Fears was underrated too. Hope you watch it.
@@GregAlverson-ri9nb There was a time when writers and filmmakers were extremely hesitant to use 'real' characters unless they were for comedy or parody. And some celebrities, like Diana, do not lend themselves to parody. It became more common in 'serious' movies only very recently, maybe just from 2000 on.
During The Hunt for Red October Jack Ryan was a field analyst for the CIA, recruited by Adm Greer (James Earll Jones). In this film he is no longer working for the CIA and is a professor at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Yup, you definitely know the Sean Miller character... from Lord of the Rings (Boromir) and maybe from Game of Thrones, National Treasure, Troy, The Martian, Ronin (a must see). You may also remember Paddy O'Neil (Richard Harris) as Dumbledore (Harry Potter), and in Gladiator, Count of Monte Cristo, Unforgiven... and this little beautiful ditty: ua-cam.com/video/-GhK4X-hMKA/v-deo.html ;)
Of all the Jack Ryan actors, Harrison Ford is my favorite to play this part. Considering the amount of knowledge and experience the character has, it makes more sense to me that he is older. Plus, Harrison Ford is just an excellent, charismatic actor.
Harrison's charisma is what makes him wrong for the role, Baldwin was much closer to the quiet unassuming analyst who did what was needed, when it was needed, character from the books.
You should read the book. Ryan drives the boat, to US Naval Academy Annapolis, where he has a squad of Marines waiting. They laid a pretty good ambush, and I won't spoil the details for you, if you decide to read it.

Cassie, you commented about funding when you saw the training camp in North Africa. Then about the 'Sinn Fein' character in the US, played by Richard Harris. Not a particularly popular topic but sadly there was significant funding in the US for Irish Republican Terrorism, born out of a rather misplaced and overly romantic notion of the 'cause' for a united Ireland. Particularly in New York, NORAID (fundraising for Northern Irish republican terrorism) was believed to be supported by the likes of NYPD. This was, for many years, particularly contentious amongst members of the British Army, that citizens from our closest allies were directly funding terrorism against British citizens and British Military personnel.
Were the Americans who supported the IRA Democrats or Republicans? Because today there are two separate factions of Americans (the Left and the Right). Or was it different back then?
@@DerekMoore82 I’m not an expert on American politics of the 70’s and 80’s but I’d hazard a guess that some distant Irish patronage might have played a big part and that ‘spin’ about oppression etc would have also been involved. @@NiclasLoof Good call by Sean Bean then. RP wouldn't have been appropriate for the Starks: they were Northerners, and broadly speaking, the North of Westeros equates to The North of England in real life. Sean Bean's natural Sheffield accent was the most appropriate one.

I just checked, and I’m watching this 18 months after you recorded it, and I instantly knew which shooting (among so many before and since) you were referencing, without knowing the date. I understand what it’s like to feel deeply for the tragedy of strangers, and wish that everyone felt as deeply as you. The universal anguish over events like that might actually produce results in significantly reducing shootings like in Uvalde.
I’m sorry to tell you Cassie that the Irish population in the USA was a major source of fund-raising for the IRA during the period when this movie was set (over the course of several decades actually). Most of the violence perpetrated by the IRA (who were trying to achieve a reunited Ireland), and what were called the “loyalist” terrorist groups who opposed them and targeted members of the Catholic community, happened in Northern Ireland but some terrorism was perpetrated on the mainland of the UK, mostly by way of bombings. In fact one of the bombings (a 3,300lb truck bomb, the largest explosive device set off in the UK since WWII) was carried out by the IRA in my home city of Manchester. Luckily no-one was killed in that one largely due to a very efficient evacuation of the city centre, but when I was growing up I remember that people being killed as a result of terrorism by “paramilitary groups” on both sides of the dispute over Northern Ireland were very commonplace 😢 Not trying to bring you down at an already sad time - just trying to inform 🤗🤗🤗
The Irish-American population only significantly supported the IRA during the Irish War of Independence. After Ireland became Independent in 1949 the Irish-Americans were content and weren't for forced integration of N. Ireland since many of them were protestants like the Unionists of N. Ireland. They stopped support after 1949.
@@theawesomeman9821 unfortunately that’s not true. If you’re suggesting that most Irish Americans did not help fund the IRA through their terrorist campaign then that may well be correct. But America was a vital source of fundraising for the IRA. It may well be a minority of Irish Americans who were doing it but it still resulted in a vital and substantial flow of money to the cause in Northern Ireland. It’s also one of the main reasons why the USA was so heavily involved in the peace process… because the US could lean so very heavily on the political wing of the IRA, Sinn Fein, over American financial contributions. There’s even an association in the USA called NORAID whose stated mission is to create a united Ireland and which formed an organised source for funding of the IRA. This organisation was founded in 1969, 20 years after you say that there was no push for unification of Ireland from Irish-Americans. Whilst NORAID’s mission statement talked of peaceful means, in 1981 they lost a US federal court case which forced NORAID to register the Provisional Irish Republican Army as its "foreign principal" under the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The judge in the case wrote: "The uncontroverted evidence is that [Noraid] is an agent of the IRA, providing money and services for other than relief purposes." NORAID lawyers appealed the decision but lost.
@@davidburke2132 let me rephrase my former statement; Most Irish-Americans didn't support the IRA but a few did. Also, most aid the IRA got from America were of non-Irish groups like the Italian mafia, who were willing to do business with rebels for a reasonable price.
Footnote: the actor who played Paddy O'Neil (Richard Harris) is the same actor who originally played Dumbledore in Harry Potter. He passed away 20 years ago.
There's only one Jack Ryan. He's been played by several actors. Sean Bean is somewhere up near the top of the list in terms of how many times he's been killed onscreen. You can see Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt in "The Devil's Own" (1997), but they're adversaries... on opposite sides of the Irish conflict.
Sean Bean, the actor who played Miller; is not only known for portraying Boromir in the "Lord of the Rings" movies, he's also known for portraying Lord Ned Stark in "Game of Thrones". Polly Walker, the female terrorist, is now known for portraying Lady Featherington in "Bridgerton". And of course you have Harrison Ford, James Earl Jones and Samuel L. Jackson; who are all Star Wars alumni.
While many will poo poo Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan, I thought he did a good job and the story in that one really resonated for some reason. Probably the rest of the great cast. Hopefully it gets watched down the road a bit!
Well done. Two of his best after retiring his laser blaster. Might also consider Presumed Innocent from the same period. A nice taut thriller mystery.
Yes, this!
Regarding Henry is also a great film and seldom mentioned.
@@light9999 Yes Presumed Innocent! One of the best Courtroom dramas. Did he or didn't he all the way until the last scene. I miss Raul Julia.
Came here to say exactly that but you beat me to it...👍
That is a reminder of how cutting edge all of this was at the time, and Tom Clancy brought tactics like that into the mainstream. We are all more savvy about the satellite imagery and bomb-view videos now after the wars and every other movie and TV show now.
The SAS are not Commandos, just sayin'.
Don’t believe it was SAS. Most likely CIA ops or Delta.

Great movie. Love the dialogue especially this exchange:
"You're not gonna make me wear a rubber, are you? The Church says wearing one of them's a sin darling."
"So is this, darling."
You know, as much as we all dive into films (and UA-cam videos reacting to films) as an escape from life, there's only so much they can do. You're human, I'm human, sometimes the world is awful and it's okay to say so. Kudos on your intro, said it all very well.
Nicely put. I agree. Evil tries anything it can think of during any movement of all generations throughout history.
I should add that it was a time before Call Waiting, or we didn't have that feature.
Clear and present danger is pretty close to the book as well and the best movie adaptation of a Clancy book.
@@unropednope4644 I remember a lot being different in the end, including Jack Ryan flying down there in the backseat of an F-14. There was more regarding the people taken prisoner at the beginning.
Jack Ryan is like James Bond. Multiple actors over the years.
Same as Batman. But only one person can play Indiana Jones.
@@reesebn38 And Indy almost had another actor (Tom Selleck refused the role)

Clannad rules. Their music for Robin of Sherwood is still damn good.
I just call him, "the guy who's not gonna survive to the end".
and the brave roguish Napoleonic War British Army officer Richard Sharpie!
I thought the "enhance" bit she did was from Super Troopers! Lol
Yes Mountbatten wasn't assassinated in Belfast, it was in county Sligo in the Republic of Ireland, where he was on vacation.
@@Curraghmore I stand corrected.
Ireland is made up of 32 counties, after the war of independence the new Irish Republic was made up of 26 counties, with the remaining
6 counties remaining part of the United Kingdom.

In the books, Patriot Games takes place before The Hunt for Red October.
In the movies, Alec Baldwin and a Harrison Ford might be the same version of the character, but Ben Afleck, Chris Pine, and John Krasinski are all separate versions.
In the Hunt for Red October Ryan's wife was played by Gates Mcfadden of Star Trek, the next Generation. She was on screen for a few seconds.

The books also have a reason for them to go after the Ryans other than revenge.

Completely agree. Carly is awesome as well.
I feel the same with the original Friday the 13th. 👍
We had a great experience filming at The Naval Academy and using cadets as background artist.
Fun fact: Sean Bean played an SAS soldier in one movie.
Air Force One, should definitely be on your Harrison Ford watch list……just watched it for the umpteenth time last night!
Yes, Air Force One is an excellent film and one of Harrison Ford's best performance's.
"What was the IRA's goal or mission?" There are more complexities, but at its core, they wanted Northern Ireland to break from the United Kingdom and rejoin with Ireland.
Well Ireland will be rejoined in 2 years time according to Data.

Sir Richard Attenborough cry freedom

Cassie, please watch Harrison Ford in REGARDING HENRY (1991 film). It is a drama / love story and I know you will love it.
I was surprised she didn't scream out "DUMBLEDORE!!!!!" when Richard Harris first appeared on-screen.

LOL.
Pathetic. Right now we're hoping for a change of government in Russia ("For God's sake, this man cannot remain in power"), even though we know that'll never happen, because Russia has very strict gun control and civilians can't arm themselves. But we're supposed to follow Canadians to disarm, when Canada didn't gain its independence until 1982?
@@DeltaAssaultGaming Their children are more important to them than letting grown adults play pretend G.I. Joe on weekends with guns that no civilian in any civilized country ever needs, and Canada isn't giving up any mythical 'freedoms' as a result. They are doing just fine, and their children are safe at school. What kind of a person calls that 'pathetic'? Plus, Canada does have a Bill of Rights.
@@Curraghmore no government or politicians can guarantee anyone's safety. You don't seem to understand that there are evil people in this world that will do heinous acts regardless of the tool they use, and regardless of how many laws there are. You can't prevent everything everywhere all the time. That's just reality. You can't just snap your fingers and make things "perfect". It's just the nature of human history. You say guns are the problem. Then what about knives? Trucks? Hell, how about sharp sticks? There will ALWAYS be something. In the meantime, I'll keep my basic projectile weapon (guns) for defense. I would not be alive if not for them..
I’m not here for any political discussions.
You are such a sweetheart.....thank you for your concern and grief about the Uvalde shooting.......I am a retired E.R. Doc and now work as a Cop in Texas, I too feel almost paralyzed with grief.
I work in Houston but we all are sick over the Uvalde shooting. My group all agree, we would have disobeyed orders and ran in the room and engaged the shooter, even if we got shot........ please continue to lift those affected in your prayers! God Bless you Miss Cassie!
Harrison is also really good in the movie 42 about baseball great Jackie Robinson. He plays Branch Rickie,
@@rexjdk Yep, him and Bosman.
i missed the live premiere. Did anyone point out that the IRA head was Richard Harris? a.k.a. Dumbledore, a.k.a. Priest from COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, a.k.a. English Bob from UNFORGIVEN?
a.k.a. Marcus Auerilius from GLADIATOR
One of the reasons why Hollywood can't do decent films about the Irish troubles.
I wish your use of the past tense was accurate, but yes. McDonald's, amongst others, directly funded them. Look into NORAID.
The order of titles in this case is Patriot Games, Red October, and later A Clear and Present Danger. Ryan was an analyst for the CIA before becoming a professor at Annapolis - Naval Military Academy. In Red October there is a line in the book that refers to him as Sir Jack.
Just one of the many cinematic deaths of Sean Bean. The best list I could find was 23 times in movies and 8 more on television.
I’ve never seen him survive. It’s hilarious.
Classic movie. Redford made a lot of great movies Cassie should just watch his filmography.
When my dad was in the Marines he was stationed in Annapolis during the time of filming this movie. He got to meet Harrison Ford when they filmed the scene at 13:40 my dad said he was a pretty chill guy had a good sense of humor.
Can't wait for you to see the next Jack Ryan movie in the series, "Clear & Present Danger" :)
Thora Birch is the little girl. Can't believe how small she is here. She appears in films like Hocus Pocus, Monkey trouble, Alaska and Now and Then.
And American Beauty.
He was Dumbledore in the first 2 movies actually -- my favorite one too :)
Yes, he was gone too soon. Of the two, he was the one who sounded like the books
The actor's name was Richard Harris. Check out a film of his called "Juggernaut".
Sort of disappointed not to see Man in the Wilderness, and Cry, the Beloved Country, too.
In the novel, the attack at the beginning was targeted towards the Prince and the Princess of Wales, Charles and Diana.
I always wondered why they changed the target for the movie
@@GregAlverson-ri9nb There was a time when writers and filmmakers were extremely hesitant to use 'real' characters unless they were for comedy or parody. And some celebrities, like Diana, do not lend themselves to parody. It became more common in 'serious' movies only very recently, maybe just from 2000 on.
Great choice, definitely a movie that is slowly being lost to time but still as impactful as when it first came out.
You may also remember Paddy O'Neil (Richard Harris) as Dumbledore (Harry Potter), and in Gladiator, Count of Monte Cristo, Unforgiven... and this little beautiful ditty:
ua-cam.com/video/-GhK4X-hMKA/v-deo.html
;)
Sean Miller is played by Sean Bean. He played Boromir in the Fellowship of the Ring. He's always a joy to see on screen.
I like him in the British Series Sharp's Riffles....and in 1 episode a young Daniel Craig plays a Lt who has it out for Richard Sharp
Baldwin was the perfect actor for Ryan. Ford was way too old and grumpy.
You should read the book.
Ryan drives the boat, to US Naval Academy Annapolis, where he has a squad of Marines waiting. They laid a pretty good ambush, and I won't spoil the details for you, if you decide to read it.
The best analyst of the CIA may have been Joseph Turner in "Three Days of the Condor"
Fact!
Thank you for being the real person you are. That's why I watch. The videos with your sister are the best, it reminds me how important time with family is. 💕
I dare say that many of those contributing wouldn’t have known the first thing about what was going on in Northern Ireland at the time except for what they’d been told.
@@SeanHendy Thanks for the info.
@@DerekMoore82 You're most welcome.
I still remember being 22 and going to see this with friends on opening night. The audience reaction as the end credits started without knowing the sex of the baby was UNFORGETTABLE. A combination of laughter and extreme frustration.
I'm so glad to see SOMEBODY finally reacting to this! Even though Sean Bean's accent is just a tad off, this movie taught me how to speak in a believable Northern Irish accent. It's not as hard as people make it out to be.
@@NiclasLoof Good call by Sean Bean then. RP wouldn't have been appropriate for the Starks: they were Northerners, and broadly speaking, the North of Westeros equates to The North of England in real life. Sean Bean's natural Sheffield accent was the most appropriate one.
@@NiclasLoof It's a lot more effort than almost anyone puts into an Irish accent. Usually they just do "leprechaun" or "drunken Irish man" in the most stereotypical ways possible.
The only major times Bean is off with this accent is with the "Ow" sounds. In Northern Irish, the "Ow" vowel sound is a bit more like an "Aye".
I work with a girl from Dublin and did her accent one day at work. She couldn't believe it. She said I nailed it. I do a good Sean Connery to. Lol
'Remember busy signals?' got me laughing out loud!
I recall watching this in the 90s I loved this movie. It for some reason reminds me of the Devils Own but that might just be due to Han Solo being in it :) But I love most Jack Ryan movies and books. The Amazon show is great as well for a young Jack. Although something about Harrison Ford playing him feels right. I also forgot a young Ned Stark was in this movie! Next should be Clear and Present Danger!
Agreed, that would be a great watch for her too. Plus Brad Pitt was incredible in it as well as Harrison Ford.
Jack Ryan -
1990 Hunt for Red October (Alec Baldwin)
1992 Patriot Games (Harrison Ford)
19994 Clear and Present Danger, (Harrison Ford)
2002 Sum of All Fears (Ben Afleck)
2014 Chris Pine (Shadow Recruit)
2018 John Krasinski (Jack Ryan TV)
Han Solo, Nick Fury, and Darth Vader vs Boromir.
Also vs. Albus Dumbledore
Luckily no-one was killed in that one largely due to a very efficient evacuation of the city centre, but when I was growing up I remember that people being killed as a result of terrorism by “paramilitary groups” on both sides of the dispute over Northern Ireland were very commonplace 😢
Not trying to bring you down at an already sad time - just trying to inform 🤗🤗🤗
Now the only Irish troublemakers you guys have to worry about is Conor McGregor
@@DeltaAssaultGaming I dunno… their rugby union team can be quite problematic! 😜
SUM OF ALL FEARS. excellent Jack Ryan movie... one of the most thrilling you'll see.
My favorite.
While many will poo poo Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan, I thought he did a good job and the story in that one really resonated for some reason. Probably the rest of the great cast. Hopefully it gets watched down the road a bit!
