▪ Preeclampsia and eclampsia both are serious condition which is characterized by increase in blood pressure during pregnancy. Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication in which a pregnant woman develops high blood pressure, which can potentially lead to eclampsia.
▪ Eclampsia is a serious complication of preeclampsia. Eclampsia is unexplained generalized seizures in patients with preeclampsia. Eclampsia is more severe and can include seizures or coma.
▪ Symptoms and signs of preeclampsia and eclampsia include edema or sudden excessive weight gain, which manifests as generalized (tonic-clonic) seizures in cae of eclampsia.
▪ Diagnosis is by measuring blood pressure and urine protein and by tests to evaluate for end-organ damage (eg, pulmonary edema, impaired liver or kidney function).
▪ Medications for treatment and management of severe preeclampsia and eclampsia usually include: Antihypertensive drugs to lower blood pressure. Anticonvulsant medication, such as magnesium sulfate, to prevent seizures. Corticosteroids to promote development of your baby's lungs before delivery.

*Preeclampsia* occurs when hypertension develops after 20 weeks of pregnancy, and is associated with signs of damage to other organ systems, including the kidneys, liver, blood or brain.
