I think Sonic 2 Lost Bits (prototypes, part 1) has a part where you can see how the unused title screens look.

In the original game, when you go to the past, you'll see two things to get smashed. First, there's a capsule thingy which affects the future if smashed or not. Smashed will make good future, not smashed will make it bad future. And at the end, if you smash it, it says "Sonic made a good future." The other one is a hologram machine of Metal Sonic which doesn't affect anything, i think.

Sonic CD was originally supposed to be Sonic 2 but the creators had different ideas
sonic 2 originally had time travel but due to time constraints it was scrapped along with the other zones
