    I am back in the water after a rather long hiatus. As a swimmer from the 70’s where everyone trained as a distance swimmer until taper time I am really enjoying the focus on technique. I am teaching myself the “entry, extension/rotation, catch” phase and find your videos, explanation and delivery perfect for me. Many thanks for helping teach “an old dog new tricks”. Cheers

      Same goes for me at 68....last trsained in the 70s. I'm learning so much from these videos and after just 7 weeks am easily keeping pace with all the much younger lane swimmers. I train four days a week now that I've recently retired

    Great tips, thank you! I especially love how you explained that we need to keep the hips & core taught and initiate the underwater turn with them. I have an exaggerated lordosis with weak abs so this sounds like it will help me a lot 👍

    I see a lot of rotation on the body during the drill so it looks like the body is nearly kicking on its side. On other blueprint swim videos you show I don't see this level of rotation. Is this an exaggeration of roation specifically for this drill?

    This drill is pretty hard to do correctly with stiffer ankles and a kick without good propulsion. The swimmer in the video has great flexibility and a good kick.

    Why the "pause" in the frt quarter timing? What is the benefit of having the lead arm in frt, and waiting for the recovery arm to "catch up"? Does it have something to do with buoyancy? Or shoulder position?

    • @christopherrogers3069
      @christopherrogers3069 3 роки тому

      Everything is about drag vs propulsion in the water. Front quadrant timing maintains an almost constant streamline position (minimal drag) so even though you aren't pulling (propulsion) constantly the net effect is so much less drag that most swimmers will be faster this way, not to mention save energy. If you pull early while the other arm is recovering you are a broad drag inducing anchor from the head and shoulders without the arm leading. The slight caveat would be in sprinting where there is more of a windmill or kayak style but even then elite swimmers still use this form to an extent. Since this channel is mostly geared towards triathletes they tend to not have most swimming fundamentals down so it probably feels like "waiting" rather than efficient timing. Hope that helps

      @joequillun7790 3 роки тому

      @@christopherrogers3069 Thanks for the explanation, Chris. I'm not 100% clear on the "drag" issue tho, when both arms are in frt.
      To me, from what I can see in the underwater videos, it appears that when implementing that "pause, or lag"...which I like to call it, before the catch is begun, it would cause more of a drag because both your shoulders would be square, or parallel to the water level, rather than if you had begun your catch, and your shoulders were 180° apart from themselves. Such as the recovery arm reaching all the way fwd, while the pulling arm has 65% of it's motion completed. It would seem that would be less drag. I don't know if I'm explaining it right.

    • @christopherrogers3069
      @christopherrogers3069 3 роки тому +1

      @@joequillun7790 during the front quadrant phase one should not be level with the water as you say. At the moment you describe, the recovery arm and body should still be rotated, by the time that you are level with the water and hand entry begins the catch of the other arm has begun. Thus the brief moment of increased drag is also the peak propulsive phase. This also helps timing of using the hips/core to rotate as well. Most non-front quadrant swimmers have terrible rotation deficits. Also the longer an object is in water the faster it will move, so if you think of your arm as the 'tallest' point then having moments without an arm in front makes you shorter and thus slower. The rest comes down to anatomy as we are land animals poorly designed to move through water so moving the arms in a windmill motion may work in a simple physics problem if we were a boat with paddles but in reality we have to optimize the human shoulder and body

    How can i protect my skin against the water? Chlorine etc. I swim 3-4 times a week. Thanks :)

    • @selva2609
      @selva2609 3 роки тому

      The best care is after swimming, since it's not recommended to go to the pool with lots of cream and sunblock on your body. It's not allowed in most pools. That's why I prefer swimming early in the morning or late in the evening.
      After swimming, your skin will be very dry, with few or none protective layer of fat on it. Then, I avoid using soap, only on intimate parts, if so. I do use shampoo and a good conditioner, and after shower, I apply a good moisturizer. You may need to apply the moisturizer again hours later.
      I also use a lips moisturizer during cold weather.
      I hope this may be helpful.

    • @selva2609
      @selva2609 3 роки тому

      Also, I'd suggest checking with the pool manager if the water treatment is done correctly. I had an episode when I was losing the skin hair, which never happened to me before. I went to the manager, who refused to accept that possibility at the beginning, but did fix the amount of chlorine they were putting in the water. That was way above recommended.

    • @leslie7922
      @leslie7922 Рік тому

      I'm not an expert but a two beat kick is best for distances above 800m. In this video she's doing a six beat kick but bear in mind it's a drill only. For this drill the kick needs to flutter due to the long pause and floating sideways.

    I am having difficulty understanding the "front quadrant timing" [3:02]. Why wait so late to begin the pull with the forward arm? I would be thinking that a person would start the recovery arm at the same time as the forward arm is going through the catch position. I think that you described it as kayak paddling. How can front quadrant timing be better?
