In this woodworking and metalworking project watch me build a Crimson guitar “Less Paul” kit. I was asked to participate in the great guitar build off of 2020 hosted and sponsored by Crimson guitars . I’ve always wanted to char the face of a guitar and I thought this would be a good opportunity. I try to set it off with the contrast of a steel edge. If I had more time I would’ve chromed the outside edge which would really have set it off of the black. Thank you for watching and for information on winning this guitar follow the link below!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🙏🙏🙏
I like the guitar. If I am the only one, then thank you for making his video just for me.
Came because of the podcast. Leaving watching the video again.
That video is epic and should totally outweigh all of the troll comments that got posted here.
Exactly. They're just pissed there's no manager to ask for. Great built.
I don't understand: why burning it if the result looks like a horrible paint job?
I agree 100%
The resources of the planet are infinite, anyway ... In Brazil this is called ' lacração '.
Sanding it down a little and he would have gotten exposed grains. I think that would be a lot nicer.
its super ugly lol
I have tried and tried to like this build, but I would be embarrassed to hang this on my wall. I love most of his work, not this one.
I’ll be honest This “Burnt Finish” was a gamble. It seems 50/50 love vs hate. But to grow and develop as an artist I think we need to take risks. This was that moment for me. I personally been wanting to try this for a while. Given the time crunch it was the time to try it. In hind site the ruff face and the ruff side needed to be a contrast (not the same) for this concept to truly work.
Maybe The side band Would work better in polished chrome. Thanks you to the folks a crimson and Thank you to all for watching and supporting my channel. Now you can buy the ugliest guitar on UA-cam all money goes to charity.

Agreed! And it takes a lot of confidence and vulnerability to take risks for millions of YT and IG subscribers! It's all part of the game 🤘
And for the record I did ground the bridge through one of the post holes. I didn’t show in the edit.
jimmydiresta You should probably mention that this is for charity though, and how people can donate for it.
You cant learn without mistakes...
Its that simple.
Every Maker knows that for sure.
Still looks Rock n Roll! I like it
Dropped in to see the comments. 🤣. Pretty sure the guitar isn’t the only thing getting flamed. 🔥
Diresta is clearly a selfish dude in this instance and should apologize to crimson. Classless with jeans man. This was charity.
@Man - lol!
The guitar tuners (machine heads)
Are upside down jimmy, the cogs should be facing down the neck, better tension 🤘🏼😺🤘🏼
Please explain the physics behind this claim.
I was skeptical for about 85% of the build, lol, but ultimately it worked in the end and I liked it. I was hoping it would get sanded a bit before it was finished just to refine the rustic a little bit.. would have been cool to have some edges burnt a little more than the field of the body for some contrast and then have all that polished guitar gear in the mix. Jimmy always pulls it off though, the steel band made the piece IMO.
I don't know why everyone is hating on this. I'd try the same thing-minus the burning, metal, and botched assembly.
Honestly, I usually dislike burned finishes on wood, it kind of just looks lazy. But I haven't ever seen it taken to the next level of complimenting it with wrought(?) iron like this. It looks so complete and makes the shiny accents pop. This looks fantastic and industrial and built to last through an apocalypse (or already having lived through one). I love it!
I would buy this just because it's a one of a kind. In the hands of a skilled musician, it could make some great music. I can guarantee there is nothing else like it in the world. Good job Jimmy for thinking outside of the box! Haters gonna hate, but makers gotta make!
That's exactly why I bought it. :) It sounds and plays great, too!
I am realy disapointed with finish and sound demo. You did not mentioned competition and charity stuff. Wasting good peace of wood. You should finish burning it.
Let TT burn it 🤐
put it back in the fire and let's pretend that it never happened
Wow he really phoned it in on this one. Looks like he did that on his lunch break with no real plan going into it. Maybe he would have put forth more effort if it had been the great leather satchel with copper rivets build off.
I hated the burn until you wrapped it with the metal. Very cool!
Did you really just put the tuners on upside down?
I noticed that too.
Same here
This video was a tough one to watch.
Yep, he did
And you care because...?
$185 for a pair of jeans. I had to click. What maker can afford those? I still don't know what charity you picked. All the other makers / builders talked about what the charities meant to them. I have followed you and loved your work for a long time but this is disrespectful. Even on the eBay listing you don't mention what charity people are giving their money to.
USA made levi aren't that much
Where is the ebay listing?
So what did you make for the charity?
Nice work on your guitar Jimmy and I LIKE THE BURNT FINISH.
Its a NO from me.
#DIYdesign zap😉raszam
So, the jeans get a mention but nothing for the charity this is being used to support? That’s extremely lame.
First thought "Oh he's doing a shou sugi ban finish!" Second thought "Nope, nope he's just burning it..." Maybe next time.
How much does that monstrosity weigh? Is it portable at all without a forklift?
He's using an anvil for a stand. He might need logging chain for a strap.
It weighs 16lbs
Diresta man, you’ve never disappointed me, but this would be the first, i googled your other guitars and yeah they may be cool looking, but just that, as a novelty item, i wouldn’t know what to expect in terms of sound and tone... and seeing this on an electric... i wouldn’t want you arround an acoustic😔😔😔
Disrespectful to Crimson Guitars. The postage of that guitar and the parts probably cost more than what that guitar is now worth. You have denied that guitar the effort that it diserves.
Hear Hear
paul ereira so what💀😂 why you so mad
@@randysgut3214 SO WHAT - You must be stupid if I have to explain.
Diresta- Putting the heavy metal in heavy metal.
Me: Wow, beautiful maple top Les Paul.
Me after the the blowtorch: oh... 😟😢
Comment section is gonna be fun on this one! Need to go make some popcorn.
@@asdqwe4468 No, It's because Jimmy loves to trigger trolls like you, the man has been customising guitars for a long long time, he even did one for Steve Vai.
Joe Joe If that’s the case, that makes this even worse than it is. He didn’t even try to make something good. By the way, he made so many basic mistakes, I seriously doubt he actually ever produced a well playing guitar.
@@iainthomas5249 But he did it all for you just so you'd get upset, mission accomplished.
@@joejoe8472 I don't buy it... I think that's total crap. You're telling me someone with Jimmy's reputation would enter a competition with his peers, be given a high quality guitar kit, be given the opportunity to raise loads of money for a charity of his choice and genuinely help people, have a huge platform to inspire other people and create something truly unique but instead decided to ignore all that and just troll people? C'mon dude, Just because you may like the guy doesn't mean you can't critique their work. Your point of view is completely delusional. He rushed through the build and built something very lack luster with a lot of flaws, clearly there's a lack of real effort here and you only need to look at his back catalogue to see this. Stop making excuses and call it what it is... Mediocre at best.
@@iainthomas5249 cry about it
I'm sure the folks at Crimson Guitar are going WTF?.............
Mark Randle I hope they are thinking never to invite Jimmy again.
@@iainthomas5249 I like a lot things Jimmy does, especially restoring that Winchester Model 1873 rifle. But this was wrong, from a guitarist POV.
no everything fine. They burn their guitars all the time...
@@Craftlngo Not like this, this is destruction
After reading the comments it would appear the guitar received the lessor roasting.
🔥🎸
So I will be seriously bidding on some of the guitars in this build off, but not this one, unfortunately.
Guitar builders look away now! You have been warned
placid renegade You mean shown how NOT to do it. Forget that it is beyond ugly, he made so many basic mistakes, it demonstrates that he doesn’t know how to build a playable guitar. I am sure he could do it but he was just to lazy to give it real go.
If this is your entry into the Great Guitar Build-off, I'm underwhelmed...
Sold on eBay for $750. Should have been $3K...
It's like he forgot all about it and phoned it in at the last minute.
@@evilutionltd If you listen to the "Making It" podcast that Jimmy is on, he says that's exactly what he did...
I wonder if this is an elaborate spoof and the real entry is yet to be revealed - I hope so. Let’s wait and see😬
This should be re-titled "Selling $200 jeans for profit at a charity auction" I hope the others do well. Excellent use of your platform.
First blacksmith guitar I’ve seen...pretty cool man!
"Let me stand next to your fire.." 🔥⚒️
Sounds exactly like it looks. Like it needs to go back in the fire.
Should have never left the fire🤐
Hahahahahaha!
Bravissimo 👏
The Needle and the Damage Done
Nice split down the middle of the body from the heat that was never fixed - that should do wonders for the tone. No shielding in any of the body cavities...maybe you should give some pointers to Dan Erlewine...
This Guitar was clearly thrown together with little care, the tuners are on upside down, the finish looks dreadful and the neck may as well have been ignored, no time spent on it whatsover besides a name stamp. It plays about as good as it looks too, sounds like it can't even stay in tune. Oh, and lets not forget the lack of promoting a worthy charity just something that will line your own pockets, you missed the point completely it seems. People are 50/50 on it? Nope I'm pretty sure they hate it. Come on dude, you can do better.
In all honesty, the neck didn't need any attention. Crimson did a fantastic job on this kit and the only adjustments needed when it arrived were the nut, string and pickup heights. Everything else was perfect and it plays/sounds great now!
@@ALisMedium I have no doubt the neck was playable, I just mean in terms of the other builds in this competition there was no extra care given to an interesting finish or anything, just would have been nice to have seen the builder go that little extra, as that was the point after all
I looked and nowhere was your charity listed... Instead of focusing on charity, you advertise jeans... wtf that's scummy. This seemed more like a money and attention grab than anything else because so many simple mistakes were made... While crimson kits are fantastic and I've build two thus far, you did not put enough effort into that kit. especially considering how much effort the unofficial challengers are putting into their kits.
Would have loved to see custom pickup surrounds instead of the plastic ones. Otherwise pretty cool!
I'd jam on that guitar. Hope it raised a lot and that you had fun building it.
It is a LOT of fun to play! :D
Badass!!
Was putting the tuners on upside down on purpose?
That is so cool. Diresta comes up with the coolest objects. I love his chickens. I'd love to have a property like that. Just away from the city noise. Live in peace. Do your own things. I'll take that life over the stresses of city life.
Zero mention of the contest at all. He completely missed the point of the entire build off. I hope he raises good money for the charity because he basically just gave the finger to everyone involved with the great guitar build off contest. Not sure why he even agreed to be part of it.
Party in the front, business in the back. Rock-n-Roll!
I did not see Jimmy put the ground wire to the bridge. Did I miss it?
Bridge is grounded. No issues at all with humming.
Ah! I didn't quite grasp what was included in the kit from your instagram. I would still love to see a burnt guitar without glossy finish but this kit is probably not the best starting point. Love the finished guitar. I didn't think the body was included in the kit!
Just about everything you could imagine to finish a guitar can be included. He probably just decided not to show it
Didn’t say “Greatguitarbuildoff.com” or that it will be on sale on eBay, all proceeds to charity. Not cool.
But it did say "DIRESTA" all over the video.....and that's what matters....apparently.
@@georgemacdonald3087 And sold some jeans...
I like it. I know nothing about guitars so no clue about if it's put together right or not but it's different. Worst case, you could certainly crack a skull with it.
Grumpy Maker For the record, it’s not put together right. It’s crap.
Sorry, mate, but there were people in this competition who actually cared about it. And promoted the good causes to which it contributed, both for their own charities and for the other makers. Not a half-hearted self-promotion for work jeans.
Beautiful !!!!
Man thats a fugly looking guitar - but, each to his own
Asd Qwe That’s the problem, there was no effort.
I would love to try burning, sanding, burning, sanding, etc for a Shou Sugi Ban look.
Ahh Jimmy I had the highest of hopes for you on this one... The AK47 guitar was in my mind when I started to follow this competition and I was looking forward to seeing what crazy design you come up with but man this seemed a little underwhelming. Sorry man.... I still love your other stuff though!
Not fond of the jean commercial in the middle. This is a charity contest.
Crazy Project 🤘
Fantastic concept! I'd like to suggest that you use a string tree to prevent excess wear on the nut though.
@@unsubpress7093 Agreed, and I replaced it with a Tusq, which I think will endure wear and tear a little better than the stock nut.
For what it’s worth, my ranking in terms of preference to own personally…
Guns N Guitars - that headstock!! And nice wave!
…tied with 3x3 Custom - super clean straightforward build. Nice shape and top!
Crimson - outlandish awesome, but I’d never go on stage with it.
Texas Toast - amazing look, but breaks your back.
Know Your Gear - ? haven’t seen final, but I like the PRS shape and expect a great finish
Big D - I don’t do Teles, nice finish, but I’m not into chevron flames either.
Angove - popping grain!, but shape hmm. And pickguards don’t connect smoothly.
Diresta - maybe with a smooth gloss finish and the original burnt look underneath. How heavy is that thing anyways?
i mostly agree, i think 3x3 custom is too plain though and Angove's would be two places higher.
Last week...
Somebody: let’s make an apron
Jimmy: okay get me a torch
This week:
Somebody: let’s build a guitar
Jimmy: OK. Get me my torch.
Bring me my toooooorch! 🔥
For some reason my brain turned that into an All Stars cover.

"Hey Jiiiiimmy make an apron"
So Jimmy took a torch from his sheeeeed
And this week somebody dumb
asked if he caaaaaan build a guitar
While he stood

They must've put resin after burning for better looks and feels
That doesn’t look great to be honest 😅
Second hand cheap guitars are everywhere but lets destroy some lovely maple instead hahahaha
Notice that it split a huge gap right down the book match. This one obviously wasn't meant for me, and very ordinary anyway.
I have done a lot of burnt turnings and wall hangers. They can give awesome textures.
Love it! !!!

Would be tempted to experiment in a heat shrink fit next time, like a whisky barrel
Very Cool Brother👍
Luthiery spelled "vandalism"; not for me, I'm afraid.
the second demo sounded like an attempted wish you were here... but at this point its "pink floyd wish you could help"
more like "Wish I Couldn't Hear"

Sounds even worse than it looks. At least it has his name on it.
Super Awesome!
There is no end to this guys creativity!!

@@joejoe8472 none, but maybe I'll build one this weekend.

@@tedsmart5539 There's a photo in one of Jimmys vlogs.
A unique treatment for sure. The camera lens does it no justice. It sounds beautiful! I also enjoyed watching your chickens free range in the backyard!
The hot iron branding technique is very much a signature of Carl Thompson’s electric bass and guitar instruments. He’s been doing it that way for decades.
Love it ! Great job !
Cool guitar. If that is going to be played on a regular basis, the neck should have also been screwed as well as glued onto the body. The tighter the connection, the less sound is lost due to flexing at the neck/body joint.
@@unsubpress7093 - IF, IF IF, the jointing is done correctly. That "IF" can be minimized by mechanical fastening in addition to the glue.

The Jimmy -Hendrix- Diresta experience !
Good luck keeping it in tune. Ouch Jimmy! Must be heavy
16lbs on the button, and it stays in tune really well. Much better than any Gibby I've owned.
@1:19 classic... reminds me of the summer I spent on my Uncle Larry's farm.
that finish should be officially called "torch burst"
that metal surround is cool af, would prefer a more matt black finish on the body tho imo. I could see James Hetfield playing it (in his younger days, idk if his spine would manage a whole gig playing that today lol)
That's the biggest disk sander I have ever seen!
Where’d you connect the ground lead, since I looked and looked again to see what you did with it?
Ben at Crimson Guitars has been doing this for years.
Yeah Ben been doing it for years but doing it RIGHT! Jimmy does some amazing stuff but this isn't one of them.
The difference is that Ben knows what he’s doing and he cares.
@@iainthomas5249 True. Ben's guitars are built to play. Jimmy's is very likely going to be hung on a wall and left.
