Fun Fact: If you look at the bottom right corner of the screen when Mami walks past Homura to get more tea you can see her attach a ribbon to Homura's leg.
Homura's sudden change in behavior and questions about Bebe already aroused Mami's suspicions, but when Homura asked for more tea, Mami looks down at her cup and sees that it isn't empty.
Just one of the many scenes that makes this movie a masterpiece. The attention to detail from start to finish is so dense that you'll probably find something new each rewatch.
Also at 1:00:36 you can see where Mami makes a clone in the dust when her soul gem flower pattern appears on her right leg.

I think Rebellion is about as close as you can get to a perfect movie sequel. It follows the logical plot and character progression, answering the questions left by the series. It expands on the themes of the series and gives you a new perspective on the whole. It defies expectations while making perfect sense in continuity. It gives each main character an important and endearing role to play. And the visual storytelling and soundtrack are just flawless. It does everything a sequel should with breathtaking execution. 10/10 film.

so i think it's important to remember that while homura _is_ now a being of unfathomable cosmic power, she's also a melodramatic teenage girl from a Catholic school.
I frequently see people misunderstanding Homura's motivations in the ending as her being possessive and controlling of Madoka, and while she is undeniably unhealthily obsessive, she's not trying to claim Madoka for herself. Her overriding motivation is for Madoka to live a happy, normal life. She'd _like_ to be involved in that life, but that's secondary.
Her labyrinth was absolutely _full_ of symbolism about how much she hates herself, and this absolutely informs her own description of herself at the end. Of _course_ a teen girl from a Catholic background with severe psychological trauma and self-loathing issues, (plus _probably_ some internalized homophobia let's be real) would consider herself evil and demonic.
On a more fun note, yeah this movie is extremely good for kyouko/sayaka shipping.

I don't think Homura actually planned this from the beginning. Her talk with Madoka in the flower field made her realize that Madoka never really wanted to be a god and that she should've stopped her from making that decision, and that's why she breaks part of her off the Law of Cycles - to give her a chance at a normal life. Because, as she says in the end, she will never stop wishing for a world where Madoka can be happy, even at the cost of Madoka hating her.

    • @NRobbi42
      @NRobbi42 2 роки тому +193

It's also worth noting that Homura's original plan was to just die in the labyrinth to protect Madoka, and even then, that wasn't until Kyubey confirmed that she was in fact the *real* Madoka since Homura still had her doubts up to that point which is why she said "so, that really was..."
Ultimately there was really no way to protect Madoka without subjugating the incubators since they wouldn't just give up after confirming the Law of Cycles existed as Madoka.
Homura: _I'll never let you incubators touch Madoka again!_
Kyubey: _Would you give up your only salvation just for that?_

The cake song in the opening act is so full of symbolisms and foreshadowing for the entire movie... I LOVE IT!
I'm lifting this from another comment section, so credits to that person:
Sayaka: Calls herself the raspberry, raspberries can be bittersweet and also have healing properties, fitting to how she herself was bittersweet during the main anime, when she declares she's not the cake, she covers her face, symbolizing the shame she felt when she learned the truth of magical girls and how she saw herself as an ugly monster.
Kyoko: Calls herself the apple, they've been her signature favorite food, in fact that's what you see eating most during the main anime AND during this movie, she had a bag full of apples when she showed Sayaka the church where she and her father lived, guess it also symbolizes original sin, aka her own wish for food and not starve was the sin that cost her family their lives. Extra fun note, Sayaka says the cake is red and sweet to segway into Kyoko, so you can throw in their relationship as an extra :P
Mami: Calls herself the cheese, this one is more straightforward, her main color is yellow, and it's confirmed the reason Charlotte/Bebe ate her in the main anime was because she thought Mami was literal cheese, notice she says the cheese is round to segway into Homura, fittingly enough, the table the girls are sitting at is spinning COUNTER-clockwise!
Homura: Calls herself the pumpkin, this one is so obvious, yet so subtle, pumpkins being associated to Halloween, witches and whatnot, basically telling us the truth of this whole world right before we even begun questioning it, which takes us to what she calls the sweet cake...
Madoka: Calls herself the melon, "when melon splits it creates a sweet dream", what does Homura do to Madokami? She splits her in two, creating her own sweet dream, then the girls say this dream is a bittersweet one, this sweet ideal world takes a turn for the bitter as Homura learns the truth of her own fate, then they say the table has the "cat's dream", Kyubei is technically a cat, and his dream is to learn the existence of the law of cycles to hopefully control it.
This movie as a whole is so full of symbolism with each twist and turn... I'm glad you loved it!

Edit: I'm not the only one. One of the biggest criticisms of rebellion is that ending. I was always of the opinion that it made sense thematically but it did bother me that I didn't have an explanation for it within the context of the story. Which is why it feels so absurd that this just never occurred to me. I took Kyubey at his word that Madoka was the central figure in each of those timelines and that's why her karmic fate was so insane without ever considering what that would do for Homura who created those timelines. I think what fooled me was that Homura never exhibited abnormal strength as a magical girl. Time control is an OP power, but not on the level of what Madoka could do. Of course, a magical girl's power is determined at the moment she becomes a magical girl so it makes sense that Homura would only exhibit her true strength once she ceased to be a magical girl.

@@featherton3381 Precisely. This is even visualized in Homura's transformation sequence.
If you remember in ep 12, before Madoka could fully ascend to "godhood" she had to destroy her own curse-blackened soul gem which caused her to cease existing. In Rebellion, Homura shatters her own tainted soul gem in her mouth and it's reborn as the "Soul Orb". Only then, is she fully reborn as Akuma Homura.
Kyubey even said it himself in the labyrinth: "The existence known as Akemi Homura has reached its conclusion."

    • @featherton3381
      @featherton3381 2 роки тому +3

@@NRobbi42 I had a slightly different interpretation of that. My thought was that Madoka became a god the moment her soul gem was created. She rewrote the laws of the universe because her wish contradicted the current laws (Madoka-verse time travel seems to be multiverse which means that if Madoka traveled back in time to kill a witch, the timelines would split into one in which the witch died and another in which Madoka never went back to so no matter how many witches she killed, more would be created). So to kill every witch in all time and in every universe, she literally had to rewrite the laws of the universe so that witches had always been destroyed at the moment of creation. Her killing her witch self was the final blow that ensured that she couldn't even be a part of the new universe, since killing herself and absorbing her own curses (plus the curses of every witch she had killed) would quickly create a massive logical contradiction (infinite curses).
My perspective is that there are two transitions every magical girl goes through. First, when Kyubey grants a girl's wish, her soul gem is created and her magical strength as a magical girl is determined by the power of her hope and her karmic destiny at that time. This is when Madoka became a god, while Homura was only slightly above average in magical strength (above Sayaka, below Mami). The second transition is when hope turns to despair and the soul gem shatters, turning the magical girl into a witch. This is kind of what happened with Homura, but thanks to Kyubey preventing her soul gem from shattering and I guess the strength of her karmic fate, she was able to access her twisted love and become demon. Unlike Madoka, she didn't rewrite the universe to avoid logical contradictions. It's kind of hard to tell, but it sounds like she instead rewrote the universe to allow herself to gain absolute control over a portion of it, where she could trap the original Madoka and everyone she cared about in an ironically witch-like fashion.

Fun Fact at the start we hear Madoka whispering. You have to rip the audio to actually hear whats being said, which thankfully someone did.
    Madoka:
Once upon a time, in the distant future, Girls made a deal with beings that came from another planet. For having any single wish be granted, Magical powers would be bestowed and they would fight frightening monsters. Girls from all kinds of worlds had their wishes granted to them and a countless number of girls fought with monsters. Before long, all of them came to use up all their power. To the girls that possessed magic, a secret rumor makes its rounds. When they disappear from this world, a magical god will come and guide all magical girls to a wonderful land. A wonderful land where there is nothing to hate or be sad about.
the thing about this is that it tells us that LoC is a rumor or Uwasa, something from MR which was being made at the same time as this movie, fused with Madoka. the Thing about Uwasas fused with people, is that they can only be unfuse by a person who has a clear understanding/mental image of the fuse person. Telling us Homura truely knows/understands Madoka and her thoughts.

So she actually wished to have tasty cheesecake with her mother once more...... after eating the cake together, her mother died right after. Not only did her mother just die, she also realized she could've cured her mother. (similar to Mami's regrets about not saving her parents too) She then turned into a witch.

Little trivia I always like to point out because the symbolism in this series and movie is freaking insane:
What the familiars of Homura are saying during the movie is:
    1. "Gott ist tot" by Friedrich Nietzsche which means "God is dead"
    2. "Fort-da" also known as "The Reel Game"
The concept was created by Sigmund Freud, and he explains it with this anecdote about his grandson:
"My daughter had taken care of him personally and had with him a tender relationship. The kid had quite the character and didn't cry when she went away for a couple of hours, on the contrary, he seemed to resign easily.
The kid had the habit, annoying at times, of throwing far away every single thing he could get his hand on. While doing it, he said loud and with an expression of satisfaction and interest "o-o-o-o". To both the mother's and I judgment, it meant "fort" (It's gone). The child didn't do anything else with his toys, only pretending that "they were gone".
One time I made an observation that corroborate my point of view.
The child had a reel made of wood attached to a thread. With great skill he threw the reel he was holding with the thread. It disappeared across the cradle and he pronounce his distinctive "o-o-o-o", and later, pulling the thread, he took the reel out of the crib again and greeted it now its return with a friendly "Da" (Here it is).
That was the entire game, of disappearing and returning."
In other words, the Fort-Da represents the absence and return.
It helps the child understand and cope with the distress of separation, it gives the fantasy of control over the situation and at the same time denies that the absence affects them in any way since they can "disappear and appear the reel whenever they want".
In Madoka Magica, the Law of the Cycle (Madoka) is represented with a wooden reel and pink thread.
(If there are some spelling errors in this, I apologize. I translated this from a Spanish comment I made in other video lol)

I was wondering when somebody was going to talk about the sheer insanity behind this movie's symbolism, because there’s so much to be analyzed it's like I can never stop learning things about this movie but I LOVE IT. And what you talked about doesn't even cover some of the most obscure details about this movie, like the fact that Homura's witch form is called the nutcracker witch because just like the nutcracker couldn't fulfill his purpose being unable to Crack nuts Homura is unable to save Madoka from her ultimate destiny (It goes deeper that that but honestly I don't feel capable of explaining that in full detail xd) And the fact that Madoka Magica in general takes so many elements of Faust, it's amazing and i don't feel like I have the Big Brain to understand and explain it accordingly which is why I'm going to share a video that explains this whole stuff better than I ever could ua-cam.com/video/eN58rxp0j-M/v-deo.html she also has a previous video talking about the show and its deeper themes which I also highly recommend.
In short, whatever come into future, and however you feel about the movie in general you can't deny the value this movie has on an artistic level, and whatever happens in the next movie I'll never stop appreciating all of it.

From the visuals to the soundtrack, no matter how many times I watch it there is something new to discover. Like the fact that Madoka's introduction at the start happens with ease, without the viewer noticing until she has made herself part of that world's nature (what Kyubey's description was of her arrival to the labyrinth).

2:06:42 "This is gonna sound kind of weird but I think this is one of the most romantic movies I've ever watched."
That's funny because I also thought of the same thing. It's very crystal clear that Madoka Magica is not an anime about romance but the entirety of Homura's characterization, her motives and objectives and her relationship with Madoka as sole - It is not a full lie to say that, yeah, it is romantic because Homura literally did all of her actions at the end of Rebellion solely with the prospect of Love. Her dynamics with Madoka, the one she held as the most dearest to her...
"This emotion is mine alone. It is for Madoka alone." Like, come on, the movie is just saying "Hey, Homura has the gay for Madoka" as if the anime hasn't made that shining, gleaming clear. It's dark, twisted, messed up, yes. It could never be in another way due to the situation Homura (and the others) live in.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica isn't about romance but Rebellion shows that underneath everything, isn't all that subtle because the finale shows you the reason of why, why that happened. The pinnacle of all human emotion. More passionate than hope, far deeper than despair.
    Love.

I love how easily it could go either way:
•Homura was plotting to pull a piece of Madoka back down to Earth all along, understood that the Madoka in her labyrinth was too limited a part of her, and waited to act until the moment she was "saved".
•Homura really was putting the pieces together as she went along and only after realizing what had happened did she decide, given the chance, she'd pour all her power into reclaiming Madoka. She really did want to collapse into her self to spare the world from herself.
Also love Sayaka's role in this one, and the Homura/Mami battle is the absolute best anime battle I've ever seen. Suuuuch a great experience!

Its just... i completely understand why homura did it! Yes it is part selfishness, she loved madoka so much she couldnt let her go! But most of it i think is really just a genuine wish for madoka to able o have a normal life! Be a normal girl! Not have to bear the burden of all the world on ber back! And I cant really blame homura for that. Did she completelly messed up the fabric of reality and became a devil for it? Yes. But she still has my full simpathy. I feel you homura. It hurts so much but i get it.

Just some scattered thoughts that popped up throughout this immaculate viewing experience
    1. How long did it take you to notice Kyubey wasn't speaking?
    2. I love this whole series, but Mami vs Homura could singlehandedly justify its existence. Raw natural talent vs what should be an impossible amount of experience
    3.
Madoka: "I could never bear doing something that would take me away from everyone"
Kyubey: "By the way, that definitely was the real Madoka you pulled into this world"
    Homura: "Aight, demon powers activate"
    4. Gotta love the sound of children chanting "Muerte" and "Gott ist tot"

      Strong cosign on point #3.
People will often complain about how "Madoka didn't have her memories" when she told Homura that, but that's literally the whole point of the scene: That deep down Madoka wouldn't have sacrificed her existence and left behind everyone she loves if she felt she didn't have to. Homura even confirms this at the end of the scene when she says "When the time comes, you can make that decision. You're stronger than you know."
And for anyone not convinced that Madoka wasn't exactly living her best life as a God, I suggest you read the lyrics from the ep 1-2 ending "Mata Ashita" which is sung from Madoka's perspective (by her VA) post-series lamenting the life she lost after becoming a God.
Hell, even the concept movie for the Rebellion sequel directly states that Madoka missed her old life and that Homura "took pity on God" by pulling her back down to Earth.

Akuma Homura is the best addition to the series and a perfect compliment to Madokami. It's such a beautiful and tragic love story, it's really what happens when you not only worship a goddess but LOVE her. On a personal level. It's just all the more tragic because the original madoka wanted to be a normal girl and didn't want to die that way. BUt the original madoka is lost and the Kami madoka is just a concept. Even as a devil, Homura can never realistically have her wish granted. -

Your reaction was by far the most perceptive one I have seen, and I have seen ALOT of reactions (probably around 20) When I watched this initially I was so astounded I immediately started it again to see what I missed. This movie really showed me what symbolism and themes could do in a well crafted story. I never thought I would look up flower meanings to see how it ties in with anime, but I did. It was very satisfying to see your reaction as you understood a lot more than many other youtubers, and since you understood more you validated many things I have noticed in my head.

  • @MrGaldor123
    @MrGaldor123 2 роки тому +17

Great reaction! I have seen this movie now 4 or 5 times, and it's among my favorite movies of all time. It didn't start out that way though, I missed quite a bit on my first watch.
Most notably, I kinda didn't realize the reason (or trigger) for what Homura did in the very end: that conversation between Madoka and Homura near the end, where Madoka says that she could never imagine doing something that would take her away from everything and everyone she loved. Homura's take away from this is that Madoka at the end of the series did not really do that wish to basically sacrifice herself because she truly wanted to; she probably felt that she was the only one who could fix everything and felt she had to. That means for Homura, that she should have stopped Madoka from making that wish, as she now knows that Madoka's true desire is to just live a happy, normal life with her friends and family.
And Kyubey confirms that the Madoka in this movie is actually the real Madoka, not some illusion dreamt up by Homura's witch - I think that this is the final trigger where Homura decided to do what she did.
There are a lot of other things that are easily missable (at least for me lol), like how Mami from the beginning of that scene in her apartment tagged Homura with a ribbon - she was suspicious of Homura's changed behaviour and look. She then sent a ribbon clone (!) of herself and that clone at least matched badass Homura in a fight.
Also, I noticed that after that very wholesome moment between Sayaka and Kyouko, where Sayaka says she regretted leaving Kyouko behind when she died, Sayaka's witch (Octavia von Seckendorff) suddenly has a giant version of Kyouko's spear as a weapon, instead of Sayaka's swords. There probably are a ton more little things like this in the movie, and I'm certain that I haven't noticed all of them.
Superb movie, I cannot wait for the sequel movie Walpurgisnacht: Rising!

    "WELCOME TO CINEMA"
When this movie came out in...2013, it was at the furthest theater possible. I lived in the southern part of Ohio at the time and the closest showing was in Cleveland, at the very northern end of Ohio. Thankfully, 4chans /a/ board (back when 4chan was good [it was never good]) had threads discussing possible car pooling and group theater watches. *I got in a car with 3 strangers from 4chan to go watch this movie*.
This video came across my suggested and while I was unsure (since most 'reactions' are kinda...bad), I bit the bullet. Gotta say, being able to see someone not only have a legitimate reaction to something but show it IN FULL too is nice. Some of the things you said made me laugh cause of what happens later, and I couldn't wait to see your face when THAT happened. As someone who's basically had this series bouncing in his head for over a decade and only recently dethroned as tippity top favorite, though this upload is over a year old now, welcome to the madness of Rebellion. I had a Japanese camrip downloaded on my PC for a month before seeing it in theaters cause I knew I would be watching it multiple times just to fully understand everything.

I'm amazed you were able to put the whole movie up with full visuals and sound without it being taken down. I'm glad you liked it though. I also think it's amazing. I'm kind of worried every time I watch a reaction to it because I don't know how people will take the "twist" if you want to call it that. I'm kind of worried about the new movie because it'll be very hard to live up to how good Rebellion is, but I would have said the same thing about Rebellion if I had been around when it was still in development. If you want more Shaft stuff you should watch some of their other series. Even outside of Madoka and Monogatari, Shaft (especially between 2006 or 2007 and 2013) does their crazy style in pretty much everything. Hidamari Sketch is one of their series I feel is the peak of Shaft's craft, and manages to show off perfectly Shaft's style despite being a down to earth slice of life series. The character designer for Madoka also happens to be the original mangaka of Hidamari Sketch, so it has a similar art and character design style (Madoka is even based on the main character of Hidamari Sketch and you can see some of the other characters look kind of similar to characters from Madoka). There's also no Hidamari Sketch reactions, so it would be nice to have one. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei's another one that goes all out with Shaft's style and I think was their first series that uses the paper cutout style you see with the witches in Madoka.

I absolutely adore the ending to this movie. It's the culmination of everything this series has been leading up to until that point and it's oh so satisfying!
In the end Homura really did give everyone what they wanted. Sure, the universe is a little cursed around the edges but all in all, that seems like a pretty good deal, especially when thinking about the alternatives..
Also, I love how, in a way, Madoka and Homura are finally equals, both being kind of gods. It's always been one protecting the other and, at the moment it's still Homura protecting Madoka but now we finally have the foundation for both of them having a relationship on equal terms. If anything, that's the thing I want them to explore most if they really do end up making another movie.

The original concept trailer for Movie 4 came out in 2015, I am so elated that its finally actually being produced. Im sure the Spin off Magia record is fine but i could never get into it simply because the twist in the main series was so major i couldn't care about anything else

How much does this anime foreshadow? Just as a reminder, near the beginning of episode 2, Sayaka looks up and sees Homura and says: "Speak of *the devil* ..." At the end of the movie: "There is one thing I will never forget, that you Homura Akemi are *a demon* "
Also every time I watch the scene of goddess Madoka coming down to bring Homura away, and Homura LITERALLY turns her face away from the light and towards the darkness as she smiles...I just can't keep a straight face. Unending symbolism.

I'm glad to see him give Shaft their due and they deserve it, but I hope he knows that Gekidan Inu Curry is responsible for the witch's art style unique to this series.
I was actually shocked by his intelligent predictions in the series and in the movie.

You're so lucky that you got to enjoy this movie *only* now! You have the privilege to know that there's a continuation coming out eventually when you went into this one :D Unlike most of us who have watched the movie years ago and waited desperatedly to hear about an announcement, for so long that I actually thought we wouldn't ever get one. I'm super excited for Rebellion 2.0, because I have literally no idea how this one could go. I wonder if the new movie is gonna be related to the Madoka Magica Concept Movie that was released in 2016.

The fact that Sayaka calls Homura "Transfer student" is a dead ringer she is the Sayaka from the original timeline. Or at least she gained enough memories, being part of the Cycle and all, to know Homura's timeline and how she treated her there, to give her enough hints that she is really the witch.
And oh my god, literally stabbing her heart out to summon Oktavia, and this time conducting the orchestra and controlling her. What a badass.
Damn, she is becoming my favorite character in this series.
