When I was younger, I asked my dad why The Simpsons were doing Who Shot Mr. Burns. He told me, somewhat cynically, that it's because not that many people watched Season 5. Which was kind of a crazy sentiment to me, since Homer had just gone into space and all. I don't know why I remember that exchange from back then, but that idea kinda stuck with me over the years. They couldn't top Homer going into space, spectacle wise, but Season 6 would find different ways to raise the stakes.

There's a joke in the rock bottom episode where they have to run off a really fast moving list of corrections after Homer is proven innocent. if you pause it and try to read the list as its running off there's a line that says "if you're reading this, you have no life". never been so personally attacked by anything in a tv show but it was great, just shows how much humour they used to be able to cram into every episode.

When things started getting stale around Season 11-12 would've been the perfect time to stop returning everything to the status quo at the end of each episode. I obviously say that in hindsight though. No matter what, the first 10 seasons will always be a legendary run of television, especially seasons 3-9.

  • @EmployeeAMillion

This is my favourite season in all of television. This was the peak of The Simpsons’ cleverness, producing so many jokes that we’re just expected to know, but it was also a really warm season. It wasn’t difficult to be enveloped by the characters and town of Springfield. You mentioned that a lot of characters had major spotlights this year, and I think that’s because Season 6 was the best at making Springfield feel like a planet. So many episodes like Bart’s Comet, A Star is Burns and Who Shot Mr Burns? Part One were made, that gave you this mini grand tour of Springfield alongside the usual Simpsons antics. While this was always a strength of the series from Season 3 (where side characters could be fully trusted to carry a plot) up to Season 10 (where nearly every episode had to focus on Captain Wacky for some reason), 6 was the tip of the bell curve in that and so many ways.

Season 5 is my favorite season of the Simpsons, but that's because of the chill atmosphere that was mentioned. But I totally get why others would think Season 6 is the best one. As said, it was able to get what each of the previous seasons did best and get the recipe just right. Maybe that is why it's a lot of people's favorites. Everything that the Simpsons was known for doing was distilled into pure perfection in this season.
Really looking forward to the retrospective on season 7...and especially 8. Season 8 is a very odd beast, IMO, because it's definitely the inflection point of the show's history. While it's still clearly in the classic era of the Simpsons, many of the problems that people had about the modern era start to seep in. All of this would have been forgivable had it been the final season, or the penultimate season. Season 8 is pretty much DEFINED by the sense that the show is winding down. You don't make episodes like the Spin-Off Showcase or the Itchy, Scratchy and Poochie Show if you don't see the end in sight. And you don't make episodes like Homer's Enemy if you don't sense the show has gotten too wacky and drifted away from its original vision.

Its going to be impossible to choose only ten from season six... goood friggen luck :/ haha.
Personally, _Bart of Darkness_ & _Lemon of Troy_ would *have* to be on my list. Those are two episodes that just completely suck me in each time & just really have some classic bits. I love how unique & funny the plots are & how well they depict each character's personalities. Also, I have a huge bias for the Lisa/Bart/children-of-Springfeild-centered episodes.
Also _Grampa vs. Sexual Inadequacy_ is sooooo good. Like, what a silly & unique plot 🤣.
But, as far as what others would deem "classic Simpsons episodes" and those that are meme'd and more remembered/referenced in popular culture ... my picks might not align with that? From what I've seen, the more popculture mainstays would be like, _Who Shot Mr. Burns (I),_ _Bart vs. Australia,_ & _Two Dozen and One Greyhounds._

This was an amazing analysis! Your transitions into each segment and the overall organization is superb. As someone who had watched Season 6 (I still remember the DVD case being shaped like Homer's head) as a kid in the early 2000's, you have pointed out so many themes I never really thought of before. Season 6 is ultimately my favorite season of the show, with 3 and 4 in a tie for a close second. I love the emotional impact of many of the episodes, the Lisa and Marge episodes this season were some of my favorites and the Treehouse of Horror was fun (my favorite right behind the Season 4 Treehouse of Horror). I do love the episodes that focus on side characters like Skinner, Apu, Krabappel, etc but the family and extended focused episodes that S6 had a lot of are my favorite. Again great job on this!

The PTA disbands would definitely be on my top 10. I love the satirical take on how school funding gets used as for political pawns and to see how Bart and Lisa both react differently to the same situation.
The whole Prepetual motion machine joke is one of my favourites in all of Simpsons history. If you let Bart run wild, be becomes some weird creep who flies kites at night, and Lisa literally breaks the laws of physics so she can be challenged.

you could argue that this season starts an important character arc for Homer, in that it's the first time he ever talked about wanting to move under the sea! Earlier seasons had hinted at Homer's passion for the ocean. When he's giving Lisa advice on how to politely rebuff Ralph he suggests saying "I'm married to the sea". But this is the first time he actually indicated a desire to live there - and he eventually did, as of the episode set in the future, where he has a house underwater. I feel like if Phil Hartman had lived longer, we might have gotten an episode where Homer and Troy would have bonded over their mutual love of the sea and their, um, appetites for its creatures. (Remember, it's common knowledge that Troy McClure "sleeps with the fishes"). Maybe Homer and Troy would have teamed up with the sea captain for some kind of adventure.

Season 6 is my favourite. Whatever the style, it is just the most perfect run of very funny episodes.
The balance of satire, parody, pop culture refences, observational humour , cutaway gags, excellent puns and witty word play and funny characters. It both goes very surreal in it's plots and stays very human in the character interactions. The irony is balanced with heart and it feels genuine.
Season 6 balanced out subversive humour and wonderful character or plot payoffs and everyone gets an excellent moment. And it always feels in character. It's like the perfect blend of seasons 3, 4 and 5. And I was just such high quality, sharp and clever. Everything works, it never feels forced and flows organically, all the jokes land and there is a lot of them. It's close to perfect.

You know, it's odd, a lot of people will more than likely just lump anything from season 1 (or season 3) through season 9 (or whatever arbitrary cut-off point people decided The Simpsons "stopped being good") as just "the classic era" and don't bother breaking things down season by season. The way you put things in perspective, in particular describing this season, really helps put things in perspective and paints a picture of how the staff behind the show changed and evolved with each new season. Season 6 definitely feels like the season of drama, intrigue, conspiracy and mystery, which feels obvious now that I'm looking at it specifically, but I feel like most people who just look back on The Simpsons as a homogeneous "good era" will miss that.

...So here we are at last. Season 6 of The Simpsons. *The **_Legendary_** Season 6. Of The Simpsons.*
The way I see it, there will never, _ever_ be another show like Season 6 of The Simpsons. Season 6 is life. Season 6 is love. Season 6 is pure television perfection in animated sitcom form. An undisputed masterpiece. This is _The Empire Strikes Back,_ or better yet, the _Citizen Kane_ of this already phenomenally funny, intelligent and thought-provoking series. A show that absolutely killed in the realm of 90s pop culture, still remembered and loved to this day, unlike that unfunny cartoon about the yellow family that currently airs on FOX that abuses glorified celebrity cameos and other attempts at ratings traps. But this truly is where the writers and artists alike absolutely perfected everything that made Simpsons episodes great. All of the most memorable humor, and plots alike are polished to perfection here.
Like a good comedy movie, they've achieved an almost yin-yang-like balance of comedy and earnest emotion in this season. Don't get me wrong, the Simpsons will always be a comedy show first and foremost, but this era of the show is _dark._ And in all of the best possible ways. It plays with the expectations of the audience (or screws them, you might say) and keeps everyone on board on their toes. Remember when Lisa, out of jealousy, tried to sabotage Alison's diorama? Nope, gotcha, she feels remorse and dramatically reveals the location of Alison's project, a clever homage to Edgar Allen Poe's _The Telltale Heart._ Homer wants to join the Stonecutters club but gets kicked out? GOTCHA, turns out he's got a Stonecutters birthmark on his rear end, so he can join after all. It's a rock that looks like a lemon? GOTCHA! There's a lemon behind that rock! The tree! Everyone in Springfield is a suspect for shooting Mr. Burns? GOTCHA, turns out it was the baby. Cough. Anyway the point is this is the ultimate screw the audience season, one of the rules of thumb for clever, nuanced writing, and a show with unique sensibilities that actively avoids retreading the beaten path.
As noted in this video, satire is in full force here in the middle of the Mirkin era. A good standout to me is the always-hilarious _Homer Badman,_ in which everyone in Springfield just will not let Homer live down the accidental case of sexual harassment. Great commentary on how the media can often blow things way out of proportion, a message which very much holds true today. How about when everybody starts a riot over a hockey game? The people of Australia, blinded by nationalist pride, gets deeply offended by a 10-year old boy making prank calls over the phone? Bart falling in love with a girl who turns out to be an even bigger hellion than himself, but even when she is punished in the end, he still lets her step all over him because she's cute? Yeah, okay, a modern society like our own certainly needs a show like this, now more than ever to drop some cartoon axes on our heads every once in a while. Well played, season 6. Well played indeed.
Some of the most iconic moments of the show are present here, as it turns out. Timeless memes like "Man Getting Hit by Football", "Urge to kill...RISING!", "Do it for her", and of course, the unsung pop culture staple, "I see you've played Knifey Spooney before." What a classic year in television history!
Pardon this Goliath of a comment filled with nothing but relentless gushing, but Season 6 of the Simpsons means just _that much_ to me, on a personal level. I was born in 1994, and watched the Simpsons religiously along with my parents since I was a baby. _This_ is the exact era of the Simpsons that I grew up with, and loved since the beginning, a show I've known my whole life, that continues to inspire my sense of humor, and me as a person, to this very day. It's amazing how vividly I can still subconsciously remember moments and jokes from these episodes even as far back as the dates on which they originally aired that we recorded on tape. I remember when everybody got crammed into Ned's bomb shelter. I remember when the Itchy and Scratchy Land robots started attacking. I remember Bart's epic quest to take the lemon tree back from Shelbyville with the eventual aid of his friends and family. I remember when Mr. Burns got shot, and passed out on the sundial. This season is one of my most treasured childhood memories. Looking back at how brilliant it was and still is fills me with pride. Although Season 7 is another worthy contender for best season of the show and contains many of my other all-time favorites, including my favorite episode of the whole show (22 Short Films About Springfield), Season 6 is my favorite season of The Simpsons, overall. What a legendary show!!
If you are reading this, you have no life.

I remember not liking a lot of Season Six episodes as a kid, they seemed to have a meaner edge to them than the other classic seasons (especially Bart who seems to keep getting screwed over). Basically Season Five without a lot of the laxness or stupid poetic justice to balance it out. I also think some of the meta stuff was getting a bit forced and cheesy by this point, not NEARLY as bad as post-classic era but it was the beginning of the end for earnest in-universe characterisation in the show.
Looking back, I think this still stands a little, though I think when a good joke is there, it hits really well. Homer Badman torments Homer relentlessly for example but it works because the satire and melodrama is hilarious. The Halloween special is also one of the most brutal, but perfect in how ridiculously handled it all is.
