I remember when these had manual windshield wipers. My dad took my sister and I on a ride, and for some reason, I decided that I had to flip the wiper every time we got into a station, and when I forgot to flip it, I screamed - earning a scolding from my dad. They now have a system of advertisement boards underground which works like a flipbook. Great to see a hummingbird move for Telus.
Look at stations like Joyce or Patterson from street level. You can see triangle shaped indents on the concrete structure where the tube steel frames would of been installed. It's a mystery why they decided not to complete the roofs.
Thanks for the retrospective comparison! I was wondering why I didn't see any other Trains going the opposite direction in the old footage until I watched it again and noticed that that stations hadn't opened yet (notice the yellow caution / do not enter tape on platforms). The neighbourhood surrounding Joyce-Collingwood Station, simply known as Joyce Station back in the day, was nothing more than warehouses on the south side of the tracks. The only thing recognisable was the BC Tel building!
so cool! I've been in BC almost the same period and love seeing the transformation. I also miss Eaton's and the jazz player who used to hang there every evening, filling my evening commutes with joy as I walked to Granville Station from Hotel Van.
i lived in vancouver for 35 years..just moved to pei last year 2013....so i REALLY APPRECIATED this video....I COULDN'T BELIEVE the growth......i guess it is like watching your kids grow up....an inch at a time it is so gradual before you know it.......they]re gone and on their own......thanks for the video
When they put in the original Expo and the Millenium lines for the Skytrain, they were really trying to drive demand and development along the old rail corridor. All those condominiums and apartments up by Nanaimo, Joyce-Collingwood, and Metrotown owe their growth in part to the the Skytrain system. Areas outside of the Skytrain system's direct influence probably haven't grown as much. ^_^
So interesting, thanks for this. At first I was anticipating the Surrey portion, since that's changed so much in the last 27 years. Then I realized that portion of the line hadn't even been built yet!
The plethora of high rise buildings that went up along the corridor is a testament to the 'build it, and they will come' ethos. The expo line carries the equivalent to ten lane freeway in people. Metro Vancouver has also doubled in size in the last 30 years from 1.3 million to about 2.5 million. All within 1000 square miles
27 years ago Metrotown did not exist, all there was at the site was the Simpson-Sears, Woodward's and a few industrial buildings it was called the Kingsway/Sussex area at the time.
Wow, I always thought the uncovered roof sections of some of the stations from Nanaimo and eastward were platform extensions, but this seems to prove me wrong. They have been there since opening day! Now I wonder if they were a revision of the original station design in order to handle 6-unit Mark I trains.
I picked a bunch of 80's and modern music to see which would work best and that song not only worked without editing but wouldn't have any possible copyright issues.
I've watched this video for years to listen to this song. It only seems right that someone post a link where you can listen and buy it: soundcloud.com/mindthings/sets/shared-loneliness

Wow, great video!
Amazing to see how much Vancouver has grown in the past couple of decades.

Thanks for making this, very cool to watch for someone who's lived here all his life.
So interesting, thanks for this. At first I was anticipating the Surrey portion, since that's changed so much in the last 27 years. Then I realized that portion of the line hadn't even been built yet!
So many more trees now. I was completely surprised by that.
Yes, I can see lot of changes between 1986 and present!!! It reminded me for long time!! Wow... Great job with two videos same time! :)
Vancouver I live here :p love the sky train !!!

AWSOME VIDEO!!!!! So many new buildings
wow surprised at how many buildings were put up in the 27 years between both vids.
Nicely done - thanks for doing that!
Amazing how much everything has changed, yet some things still remain identical!
I really enjoyed that thank you so much for sharing ^.^
Great video!
really enjoyed this thanks
27 years ago Metrotown did not exist, all there was at the site was the Simpson-Sears, Woodward's and a few industrial buildings it was called the Kingsway/Sussex area at the time.
Awesome video!!!
damn I was pausing at each station looking for myself; I saw some dude holding a camera the other day and just knew this video would be out!

Awesome comparison. Thanks!
The right has more buildings and trees compared to the left.

Congratulations on being Voted #1 Video of 2013 by our customers at Hoosier Hobbies.
Woah, really?
I'll give a warm "thank you!" to everyone who voted. This was unexpected.
It would be great if Surrey had more than four skytrain stations.
Amazzzing
That was awesome
Welcome to those brought by the algorithm!
very cool !!!
surprisingly there are more trees on the video on the right.
people complain about too much rain in Vancouver compared to Victoria, but this is the upside to that. Double the tree growth rate. Beautiful.
Comparison
Compared to 86, I think Vancouver has grown to become a truly unique city.
Btw very cool video
My God! We really are a pestilence on the Earth!
Wish transit was this fast
New West is unrecognizable. Wow.
The trees got alot bigger.
Really enjoyed the video! That being said, I surmise the song leans more towards 1986 as opposed to 2012?
Excellent video! Too bad the original video did not go past New West (or was it Columbia?) station.
I don´t remember that 1986 was so blurry...lol
Macromedia flash... Slightly behind the times. Great video though!!
27 years later and most of the old stations STILL look ugly as hell.
Why not try from Waterfront to VCC-Clark.. :D I am curious... I would LOVE to see it...
pretty cool .. so this is how it looked before the Chinese attacked with condo power :)
Vancouver, Canada
For people that are mentioning more trees now, lol, did it ever occur to you that they grew in 27 yrs
the evergreen extension is out so do a video of that
What train was the new video filmed on
Mark I. Only the finest in Canadian rail technology.
I've watched this video for years to listen to this song. It only seems right that someone post a link where you can listen and buy it: soundcloud.com/mindthings/sets/shared-loneliness
+Sarah Maywalt
Thanks for the link. I forgot to drop that in the credits. Also I second that. Mindthings has a number of really good songs.
nice video! what's the name of the song?
Shared Loneliness by MindThings
how we change
Vancouver's still Vancouver!
Hongcondo? No...?. *facepalm*
Seriously? Because the Millenium Line was built around 2000/2001 and there would be no comparison video from 1986. Dumb question.
What line is this?
:D
This one is Sky Way: skyway.capital/en/
All that changed was wayyyy more trees and a few high rises pretty pathetic 27 years
They're Expo Line Stations! They're not quite as pretty as the Millenium Line ones
Where is this?
TVperson1 Vancouver bc
What music is it is it a non copyright music?
Song and artist information can be found at the end of the video.
Shout out to Mindthings for being flexible on single track reuse.
CelGenStudios is it copyrighted though
I can't say yes or no for them. They at least were okay with credited use in this video. You will have to ask Mindthings.
CelGenStudios alright, thank you for letting me know.
*facepalm*
Any footage of the trains running during winter? Oh yeah, that's right! they don't work in snow...
LOL thats the millennium line not the expo line, and believe me, theres a difference
No, the signage reads "Expo Line Train To: King George," and both lines shared tracks until 2016. The Millennium Line ran to VCC-Clark at that time.
Vancouver should be renamed to Vancondo
😡
they looking fake
racist much? that comment is as old as the skytrain..
Oh my god
But UA-cam did not exisist in 1985
