I was a skateboarder in the 90’s. I even had brief encounters with a few of the people in the film through those circles, Harold (RIP) etc….
I remember watching this film and feeling seen. It was a documentary of sorts. It did capture what it was like in more than a few groups of kids around the country at the time. Including my friends circle.
Now that I’m older I get the sense of horror older people felt seeing it back then. At the time it was as if someone followed us around for a day, felt normal, like a documentary, not disturbing. Now it fills me with dread and anxiety knowing I survived those days.

I'm 38 years old. I only watched Kids for the first time a month ago. It mortified me. I couldn't be seen without my skateboard in the 90's and my "friend" circles were very similar. It never dawned on me until watching it, just how close I was to teetering off the tightrope. The sexuality was comparably imperceptible in my groups, but the substance abuse and aimlesness was like watching home movies.

Dude just got groups of kids together, got them fucked up, drunk, whatever, riled them up, pulled out the camera and filmed it. No script etc. edited it into the rest of the scripted portions of the film. It’s partially why it “feels” real. Because it is partially a docudrama. He does the same thing in a different film. such a phenomenal movie! but I re-watch it every couple of years, and it keeps getting better and better... utterly remarkable how realistic and relatable it all is - for all of us who came of age in the mid-90s, this was a startlingly real and hyper authentic viewing experience... no other movie comes even remotely close - it's our generation's Easy Rider, a true masterpiece

That was quite a synopsis of what was one of the rawest movies I watched as a kid who grew up in the 90s. And seemed to do the same for many others. I was born in 1983 and grew up in the sticks my entire life, and still live in a small town, yet it struck a cord. I still think about it regularly but haven't seen it but that one time and I can't stop searching for it. I would b extremely grateful if someone could point me in the right direction so I can view it again.

Although Clark and Korine made a spectacular film they were not the best people to the cast members.Note, they only gave $1000 to each kid even though the film made $24 million. And after they finished filming they blocked the kids from
going to the film festival or press conferences. They even stopped talking to them even though they had followed them for years. Korine wasn’t even interacting that much with the skaters until Clark got involved. That is why so many of the original cast was forgotten so easily. The original skater family had no support system like the ones shown here and that’s why none of them are in this interview.

Not hating on the three wonderful actor/actresses here though. Just stating that they came from different areas/ backgrounds compared to the teens that Clark originally filmed before the film. So this may have played into their later successes.

So when you get a million dollars to make a movie you have to pitch and make a budget. They had 30 crew members. They had to buy music rights. They had to hire lawyers. They had to pay the city. The people who made 20 million were the same people that put up the million. And as far as they knew maybe the movie would only make a 100,000 grand and be a complete flop.
If someone pitched this movie who would put up a million for it most of the people were novice. It was a pretty far out gamble. Like 20-1 odds
I’d bet harmony only got ten grand for it. But he did get future work.

I was born in 84..I remember hearing about this movie when I was in fifth grade , started skateboarding in 7th grade and hanging with some older skateboarders who acted suprised that my young ass hadnt seen it .. I watched it with these older kids who took the film as a way of life, what they wanted to be , and I felt horrified and excited all at the same time .. growing up with these guys and now being 38 and still knowing some of them ( the ones that stayed here and didn’t leave or die ) it’s very horrifying how much we thought this film would be or could be us , that our lives at such a young age should have looked the way they did in this film , and that we did indeed transformed our lives in some aspects accordingly .. fuk man. I don’t know if this film saved me or ruined my life .. but I do have a lot of fond memories ..

If you switch out the Aids situation with heroin addiction the movie kids perfectly in bodied my childhood of the early 90's. So it is very hard for me to watch because I knew kids who were caricatures of these roles in the film..

"That movie could never exist today, for a lot of reasons, but like this is pre cell phone… so you could never make that movie cause she could just call him on his cell phone.. you cant get lost in movies anymore cause everyone has GPS.”
I could apply that to real life as well, not just movies.

This has nothing to do with this but I always say that Zac Efron is of course an A Lister but hey when we see him who do we see Troy Bolton that’s where he blew up from! But

It’s interesting that the one thing that was really added on and they admit they knew nothing about was the AIDS storyline. Now, 30 years later we know it’s extremely unlikely for that aspect to happen. It’s hardly ever spread by vaginal sex, especially if it only happened once. I can see why they wanted to include that in the film so that there can be SOME consequence or closure to all this wild behavior. But Harmonie used to say he wanted to it be sort of a “day in the life” kind of story od NY kids. I think the more professional and experienced writers must have said well, there has to be some kind of arc or consequence, even if it shockingly happens to the most innocent person in the movie.
