      That movie is terrible. A complete drugged up and drugged out director exploiting people from different walks in southern culture basically for his own personal amusement, and then people like yourself think they are being so deep and that it is this artistic, multi layered, avant garde masterpiece... Kids is so much better with real cultural messages, commentary on a potential fucked generation, and a realism that is raw but digestible. That movie was directed by a far better director in Larry Clarke but Harmony did write it and have a lot to do with film. God I hate Gummo.

      Jervis Paraggua you’re comparing someone in their early 20s and their 40s, ofc he’s changed! Also wasn’t he a drug addict in the letterman years hence all the tweaking didn’t he get a lifetime ban because he was sniffing in meryls purse probably for drug money. Now he’s sober. You can still see his ticks here but they’re sedated he’s probably on adderall now and got his shit together.

    Most film makers have parents that either made films or either they have parents that are privileged in other ways.
    But people always focus on people without context and think it's all in 'our own hands'.
    For many in less privileged classes/lives , making movies and practicing many other arts isn't even an option, it is not even alive in the mind as something that one can do.
    I just wanted to share this shit.

    • @mineralt
      @mineralt 3 роки тому +9

      That’s a defeatist attitude. You are coming up with reasons why you can’t do something. A lot of young people have this crazy idea that life is all worked out by 20 or something. Please, I changed careers completely in my 40s, and I mean completely, and I had been a president of a company in my 30s. If you want to be a filmmaker, start. People fail because they are scared to start.

    Harmony was genuinely honest in this interview. He was/is creative. Most film and TV writers as well as actors/actresses, classic book writers/novelists, music composers, musicians, etc. are creative because of drug use. That's a fact. When I first saw him on Letterman three times, he was eccentric and awkwardly funny and played to it. Harmony had the heebie-jeebies and Happy feet which are generally the signs of a tweaker, too much sugar or too many energy drinks. As it turned out later, he was a crack and heroin addict. He was drugging prior to entering the Green Room of the David Letterman show and was caught by David Letterman going through Meryl Streep's purse, consequently was banned from the show there on. Still, has not worth today is over 8 million $.

    Full on - “understanding what it’s like to live outside the common realm” , this is an impossible task for 95% of the younger generation today. We grew up in a time when grunge and even before that, glam rock, punk, and hip hop were thriving, when what was edgy was also what was popular, this is a mind set that kids today cannot relate to, unless they’re manufacturing it themselves, most kids today look at our generation as fucked up cuz many of us ruined our lives in this pursuit and that’s a fair critique- but we at least experienced life outside of the common realm, and those of us who made it have interesting stories and perspectives, I mean I would take much of it back if I could have my health, but I’m an outlier , you don’t have to do it like I did, I was basically one of those characters from korines kids movie, except unlike the rest of my friends I made it out, mostly cuz like morons I was interested in learning and reading, instead of just getting high.
    But yeah if you weren’t born into the streets it’s possible to do it without killing yourself- I’m sure!!

      @@Butch_117 not what I said at all, I would never say something so benign.
      Just look at the differences in popular music, that explains it all.
