In this video, I show one of my many approaches to creating songs in Ableton Live. This video demonstrates a simple yet effective workflow that you can apply to your own productions.
While the video states "in under an hour" and its obviously over an hour, it would've been had I not been explaining what I was doing, so there's that ;)
I had a lot of fun making this video! If you have any questions or if you like this video, please leave a comment below!

Great workflow and very interesting arrangement techniques. Will be a great help to get me out if the 8 bar loop syndrome. Would love to see more of these videos. Thanks man 😊👌🎶
That's definitely the best part about this technique - creating the roadmap for your song early on gets your head out of the 8 bar loop mentality and thinking about the other sections right away. Cheers!
Awesome. Many Thanks.
Great tutorial. Game changer for my workflow. Thank you!
Glad to hear it was benefitial!
very useful! Thanks for sharing.
glad you enjoyed!
good stuff once more, this totally flew under my radar. I only saw your bass video recently and have been working my way thru each video.
I noticed in a vid you used Cthulhu and what appeared to be a library of midi pattern clips?
With that being said, do you primarily use Cthulu for full on experimentation with what you've already tracked? or is it something that you use as a starting point.. .and if so, how do you not get trapped into scales these plugins lock into?
and for your midi library, ... I need to find the right timestamp from the other video, but do you use a prefab midi library? or just compile and collect patterns over time?
anyways, thanks for all the insight. (its at least helping me thru some of my writers block)
hey! thanks for the questions!
1. I use cthulhu whenever i'm stuck and want to try something really 'out there.' Its not my go-to for creating songs but it can definitely help in creating some interesting ideas. as far as the scales - that's really up to however you want to progress the midi pattern. you can record any incoming midi from cthulhu so I just go and change any notes I want thereafter. I don't rely on cthulhu to write the progression for me but rather use it as a starting point for unique progressions or arpeggios. from there I'll tweak and edit to my liking once i've recorded the midi notes (editing them in piano roll)
2. i've been collectin (and producing samples) for the better half of a decade so I've amassed a very large library of midis. they're incredibly useful if you're wanting to add flavor to your productions, or if you just want to start off with an idea that's tweakable. the midi's i have come from a variety of sample packs ive created over the years, some that i've purchased. normally whenever i buy a sample pack i extract all the midi and place them into a MIDI folder and categorize them so i know whether they are for drums, synths, bass, pads, etc. Its a time consuming process but worth it in the end! I love collecting midis, even ones from popular songs (you can google search midi's for just about any song out there!). they're great for educational purposes and if you're not that great of a keyboard player like me, they can really help you learn how to create different chord patterns that you might not be able to do on your own.
hope that helps!
Why do you mix with increments of 3db? I must have missed the explanation. Thanks!
Its not a rule per say, but whenever checking levels I've noticed raising things by 3 (or 1.5db) is usually more noticeable than raising things by 1 dB at a time. If I raise something at +3db and its too loud, then I can lower/raise things by 1.5 and the jump feels better mix-wise than say, going from 1db to 2db, etc. It's probably just a habit I've picked up and works well for me.
Also its a nice way to organize your levels within your project files as opposed to everything being in random intervals. If you go from 0 to 3, to 6, to 9, to 12... You can pretty much go to any fader and check the meter and know things are on track for the most part.
