  • Have no friends? You’re actually not alone- even if it seems like it!
In this video, I talk about the Loneliness Epidemic and what I think caused it based on articles, input from other people's anecdotes and media, and my own personal experiences with loneliness and our social evolution. Being lonely can be hard but trying to find a reason for why we are lonely might give us more tools and background knowledge to fight that crushing feeling!
What do you think plays the most importance in this loneliness epidemic? The loss of third spaces? Social media? Dare I say- capitalism??? Or do you think it's something else entirely? Let me know in the comments below!

I wholeheartedly agree with your ending message. There's no space to feel lonely when you learn to love yourself.

I needed this today. I work at a tech company and i started as a Co-Op (intern but fancy) and i had an excellent time and i performed very well. Welp i ended up getting an email saying there was no budget for 2023 to hire us back so the job i was told I would have became non-existent because an exec was sales driven vs operations driven. 2023 was a struggle and it felt like everything I did to prove myself was all for nothing and I shouldn't try. It made me feel like i didnt do enough and I failed. Luckily in 2024 I'm back at the company in a different position as a contractor but I'm counting my blessings. Good video!

Felt weird to hear you say you cut off your friends in 2023, because I did as well. Not permenantly but I felt like it could be were it not for some stuff like meeting a friend's younger brother while substitute teaching 😂. I felt these things you explored but thank you for explaining it well, especially the bits about our culture surrounding "strangers and randos". It's baffling and demoralizing how antagonistic we treat each other, as I'm guilty of it myself

    • @SirSugarMeat
      @SirSugarMeat  4 місяці тому +2

What a coincidence! Yes, I agree- sometimes it feels like the antagonism is built into our culture, but being aware of it is always the first step to improvement! Thanks for watching!

I really liked the video, I actually watched it twice, cause it was so dense with information. There are a few points though, that I feel should also be noted: For one I don't think that the points you raised for the disappearance of third spaces really fit that well, since they never were a leveler. Like today there were just certain activities, that certain people do in parts of the world. Coffee places e.g. in the renaissance were places that all kinds of people could meet, but most if not all happened to be academics, I mean one could already expect that it would've been hard for common folk to talk about recent developments in physics research, as well as pay for food and drinks. What I'm trying to say is that there are just places where you meet certain people then as it is now. I don't think though that the changes in social media usage comes from the apps themselves, but rather the amount of people using it. This may also be just my pov but it often feels pointless to interact with posts that millions of others see, because it's almost impossible to be seen by the author/creator/etc themselves. So why would I comment in a sea of comments that are mostly like my own would have been. I also don't think that work places should be left out of possible places where you could fiend friends just because of the option for betrayal. There is always the possibility for betrayal in every close relationship but that is what it means to be vulnerable and you can't have a lasting friendship without beeing vulnerable/trusting said friend.
Anyway thats just my thoughts on some arguments, maybe you'll actually read it - if you did - please don't let my points discourage you, I really really liked the video!

    • @SirSugarMeat

Hmm not sure if I’m following your comment on cafes / academic third spaces, but I can see your point in the others.
I see your point about social media but I’d also argue that your exposure to a larger pool of users is also a result of how the apps have changed. Early MySpace and Facebook didn’t really expose you to strangers; you only added people you knew directly for the most part. I completely understand not wanting to interact in a space where offering your pov seems pointless, but isn’t that also a product of this newborn influencer culture / accounts with millions of followers or at the very least get a ton of interaction?
You’re right about the coworker thing though- trust certainly can be broken anywhere. It could just be me personally but over the years I have found myself needing to be more guarded though

@@SirSugarMeat My point with third spaces was just that I believe that they don't dissappear, but rather that people just don't want to frequent them anymore, because might not have anything in common with the people that go there. For example: I'm a student, I go to pubs/cafes that are frequented mainly by students. Most students don't deviate from the "main" student places and i wouldn't recommend it. I personally sometimes just try random things to break habits and so I have been to different places with people that have way different opinions than mine and it may just be me, but I have never met anyone, that isn't at least kind of in the same situation in life as I am, that I could consider a friend. Sure most people are friendly and having a conversation with different people is sometimes really fun, but I wouldn't want to spend a lot of time with them, because I much rather spend time with people that have a lot in common with me. And I think like most people would rather do that too, so places to find friends are more so directly limited by your own point/situation in life than society/capitalism (though ofc they too have an effect).
Yea it may also be a product of influencer culture for sure, but I don't think that influencer culture is something new or internet specific and depends more so on the people that happen to use social media. I mean popular musicians have always changed what people (especially children) wanted to buy or own. And if any huge artist creates their own social media account, ofc thats always huge for that platform, because a lot of people may just use it now, because their idol uses it. The interaction between them and their fans would also probably not really change. But I think you can still use the platforms to interact with people that don't have a huge account/following, as for making friends on social media, honestly idk - but it probably really depends a lot on how you use the platforms

      Re: social anxiety section
I've always been more of an active user, but my friends have been more passive users. I think this led to me developing my own social anxiety as I wouldn't get a lot back from my friends

I'm currently in the process of building a new friend group. While I relate a lot with my primary group, schedules and other stuff just aren't compatible. My needs aren't being met.
Finding new people is rough while unemployed. Most people want to do things that cost money versus just hang out. I might be switching universities soon so they might help - I'm hopeful!

It’s crazy that you’ve also dumped friends in 2023; like you I also realized the only thing I had in common with my old friends was our place of employment… but our interests were not very aligned (they want to get drunk and party, I played along but realized I just wasn’t meant for that… also fucked my liver up getting blackout drunk once, it lucky I’m young and back to normal lol) but now I’m just as isolated as I was as a child 😅, so I’m trying to pour into my own cup. It’s a difficult journey, but it’s refreshing knowing I’m not as alone as I often feel ❤

I like this video, and this is hitting all age groups, but I think it is the worst among younger people. I'm older and can remember my main third place was 5 o'clock happy hour. The bars would fill up around that time and people would drop by for a couple drinks before going home at night. That has completely died out as have the majority of corner bars. I think the smartphone, social media and the plandemic were the last nails in the coffin. I also see many young people that can't handle a face-to-face conversation with a stranger, it never used to be that way. Outgoing, colorful and social people have been replaced by screen scrolling introverts/zombies with social anxiety. It is really sad how we have become so disconnected when technology was supposed to connect us. I don't like what the future looks like for any extroverted people, I think it will be very bleak. If I could go back to 1990 something I would have checked out long ago.
