  • Well that was an enjoyable month... one of the most hideous stretches of variance I've ever experienced is now in the books (not that it's necessarily over!), and here is the damage! I was obviously hoping to press on after a decent start, but sometimes the cards have other ideas.

    Ultimately poker is a game of mental toughness and long-term vision. Very few who embark on this journey to make it into a profession succeed. In fact, at some point I tried it too but I just gave up after a longer period of downswings and bad beats, I just straight up couldn't handle it.
    I'd say that in the end you need to be so passionate about the game that nothing can detter you from getting better and make a living out of it. I envy those who have that passion...
    Even though I am not actively playing anymore I still enjoy watching you go through this journey and I really hope to see you make it.

    This graph will show a lot of people how do variance affect good players to not make short term thinking in the game
    Its a great example Nick as for content
    Im here for like 9month already starting from your stream playing nl2 with 20$ in my account and now im gonna be shottaking nl25 next month
    I just remember when i was spamming in the chat "create discord Nick" and now we are reviewing hands almost every day , Rox is joining us a lot and this discord, people are just having fun there and i improved my game like 10 times
    Just wanna to thank you for all what you've did up here and i wish you some challange like "100k$ challange" to be super easy and just having fun remembering this one

    Man, such a great video. Firstly, the upswing is on-LFG. On a more serious note, thanks for being so open about your experiences during the challenge. I can fully sympathise with the fears of people coming to your stream and thinking 'why would I watch this bloke? he's not crushing'... But one thing I am starting to realise and I think is 150% true for you too, is that people are coming to watch YOU play. If they wanted to watch a poker god playing high stakes, they'd be elsewhere (one day maybe we'll get there). People are connecting with you because you're a nice funny bloke-so don't underestimate the value you bring on that front as well. On the poker side of things, I've been going through a similar experience (up $200, now down $200 running $100 below EV) and I feel exactly the same in terms of questioning whether or not you actually know wtf you're doing. The fact that you can reset is really important and I think you're doing fairly well not overreacting to the results. Keep playing, studying and you'll complete the challenge and hopefully I can too haha. One question I'd love to know is if you think it's worthwhile in these time potentially having a private coaching session just to help understand the downswing a little better and make some minor tweaks? e.g. you mentioned focus being crucial. I don't have access to benabadbeat haha but anyone else you'd recommend? Cheers mate and keep it up!!

    • @eastyyy22
      @eastyyy22  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much for this, Simon! The upswing has certainly begun so hopefully we can ride out a big one! Appreciate the kind words and I do feel very lucky that so many people seem to enjoy watching the challenge.
      I would say a private coaching session is incredibly valuable but they're not all free, especially ones on the level that I have received! I don't really know of anyone unfortunately! My Discord is a great place to through hands and thoughts around though and I saw you joined recently so hopefully you see some form of value from that!
      Thanks again.

    So at a 5bb/100 winrate, this will take roughly 200k hands. Definitely a grind, but doable. I recently started playing 10NL snap and it is obviously soft, but I was surprised at how outright spewy a lot of the players are. Keep at it Nick and you’ll get there.

    • @eastyyy22
      @eastyyy22  2 роки тому

      I'd be so happy with 5bb/100 after what I have experienced so far, but I think I need to be prepared for it to take longer at this point. I've taken such an abnormal amount of hits so far that it's going to be hard to recoup that win rate. 10nl snap is soft but short stackers and nits make things a little tricky, along with the bumhunt obviously! Thanks for the support.

    When you go through periods like this, it is one of the most crucial parts of learning Poker, and it's where we learn about our emotions and feelings towards the game. I think I read a book by Peter Clarke, one of his Mental game books and he describes needing to become "An EV robot" but in a more pure simple term, how do we perceive losing? Do we perceive it as losing or just part of the journey? I once told a friend I would always fight every session even when I am not winning and he said "only you see this as a fight" and it resonated with me, I started to find myself to be more indifferent to the result. This framework of course is slowly built up through many long hours of grinding and several downswings, but when you come out the other side and move up a stake or hit a goal you realise "I went through some bad variance and came out the other side fine, so I can do this again and again" and I have done, until where I am now but instead of being $400 below EV and not hitting flops and being coolered for $10 stacks, I am $6,000 below all in EV and doing the same for $200 stacks. And I am going to be doing the same one day, I hope for $60,000 and $10,000 stacks.
    And your graph where you win at 21bb/100 vs your downswing isn't just you suddenly clicked and become a 20bb/100 better player, you just have a little more confidence and run better, the power of the mind to be positive and confident can be amazing.
    Besides I told you the 40 BI upswing in the next 10-15k hands was coming. Hard time being right all the time (You better not start to lose to spite me).

      @eastyyy22  2 роки тому +4

      You're absolutely right, and I haven't played enough poker to deal with this correctly just yet. Part of this challenge was to deal with stuff like this, so in a way I'm glad it's happened like this. Totally agree with the positivity and confidence, that's more what I am nodding at there. Heater inc for sure lad, thank you!

    Another great update video, Nick. Your ability to reflect honestly on your performance, and your desire to play your best, make you very engaging to watch. You'll run better, and perhaps play even better, in the coming weeks and we'll see $1000 before you know it. Bena is a hero and your bromance is beautiful.
    As well as finding them all entertaining, I've learned loads watching your videos and streams; hearing you talk through your strategy has genuinely helped me break even. Listening to your thoughts on mental game in this video, and how you're coping with this downswing, makes me realise I have gaps in my own mental game to address too.

    I think losing is mentally easier if you know it's just variance and not your ability. I know what tilts me more is when I think I've made a mistake a lost bc of. it hurts much more than if I've been coolered or sucked out on. When you're learning it's so hard to know/ have confidence that it's just variance and not bad play bc you don't have the skills yet to make that judgement.
    I guess having Ben to give you occasional info can definitely help with this!

    • @eastyyy22
      @eastyyy22  2 роки тому

      Variance is definitely a massive part, but I am not naïve enough to think I couldn't be playing far better and that's what I will focus on addressing. But variance certainly affects confidence and judgement I would agree!
      Having Ben is all that's keeping me in the game!

    Excellent video, one of your best. Yes, it looks as though you are going to be in it for the long haul with this challenge, but it will feel like more of an achievement when you eventually get over the line. Along the way, there’ll be a lot of really great content for us to enjoy. I don’t think new viewers will be “put off” following / engaging with a streamer just because he isn’t running good … every single poker player can relate. Perhaps a bit of grasp of maths/stats is needed to understand how a such a prolonged -EV run can occur despite what superficially looks like a high hand count, but so be it. Obviously you fully understand all this.
    Some of your perceived bumhunters might just be players who think it’s fun to see themselves on stream whilst improving their play a bit. E.g. err, me!

    I've ran pretty bad a couple times at nl10 too. The worst part is when it goes on so long doubt starts to creep in wether you're playing good or not. I haven't watched you stream but based on a tiny unrepresentative sample your play seems somewhat strange for 10 NL. Do you really need to defend bad hands out-of-position with solver-approved ranges? These guys are mostly playing ABC-poker so when they bet they just have it. Do you really need to randomise whether you open K8o on the button?
    I think you should look at that last hand with Q5dd on 876Jdd. Seems a mandatory raise to me as you're printing when they fold Ax or small pairs. You say you don't want to be 3-bet off the hand but this will happen rarely (as a bluff) at these stakes and in any case your flush and straight draws are both non-nut so it doesn't really matter anyway. You correctly recognise that you can't raise the river even when you get there so you're just "wasting" flushes or straights as bluff-catchers. I'd be interested to know what a solver says for the turn there.

    I have discovered that when i only play 2 tables of zoom my winrate is much higher than 2.3 its more like 7 or 8 i have stopped 4 tabling for a while and and just 2 table now

      Any winrate over 100k hands you can be really happy with especially one over 2bb after rake! Just remember to keep focusing on improving all the time. 2 tables is definitely best, particularly while you work on your game. Good luck!

    Seems like you give way too much credit to your opponents. This is 10 nl. Randomizing in any scenario seems kind of comical. And the way you tag players with 96 bb as weak as if the 100 bb players are any better. Do you honestly think there is a single player in the pool who is anywhere near as knowledgable as you are? Why are they playing 10nl?
    Also why do you care about your realized EV? Your super unlucky run is literally worth one three bet pot in a casino game. If you're concerned about making 1k then just play more exploitatively. All you're doing is paying rake by balancing.

      I learn from a guy that wants me to play in a certain way so I am sticking to it because otherwise things get too muddled. And it's really not about winning 1k, the monetary result is whatever. Just trying to build the channel and do my best.
