Ngl, I really wish she put in the non-remixed version in the album. I feel that it suits the imagine of a sunirse/calm after the storm much better (the storm being Pluto).
For the cover Björk explained her vision for the Homogenic cover, which carries a resemblance to "someone who is put into an impossible situation, so impossible that she has to become a warrior. A warrior who has to fight not with weapons, but with love.
I was 10 years old when this album came out, and I made my dad buy it for me because I was obsessed with the cover. I'm not exaggerating when I say this changed my life completely and influenced how I listen to music forever. I didn't know anything could sound like this. To this day, it's one of my favorite albums of all time, and I think it's her strongest (though Vespertine and Post are right up there). Thanks for the reaction, it was great to relive this album.
I hate your reactions cuz you put find these profound meanings and connections and i just be like oooohhhhh thats what its about. Nah fr, its why your reactions the GOAT
Get ready. Vespertine is coming. Thom Yorke of Radiohead said the band was really inspired by this album. In fact, Unravel is one of his favorite songs of all time.
Can’t wait for it! People were telling me Thom Yorke was inspired by this album which is so dope! I also need to get to Radiohead too, only heard 2 songs from them, creep and paranoid android
I think Homogenic is the perfect blend of accessible and experimental 90s pop. Such a good album. And I feel Vespertine also managed to accomplish this. Love this reactions! 🔥🎉
this one is a favorite!!! about the cover: Björk said that her inspiration for Homogenic was her home country Iceland and the landscapes, the character she came up with for the album cover is a goddess who fights with love. Björk wanted to mix different cultures within the outfit (the japanese dress, african necklace) to make the cover feel like an homage to the world and each part and culture of it, but mostly her own home country. She also mentioned that she wanted a sort of volcanic feeling for the album so she came up with these very "volcanic" beats along with her producer, who did a long list of beats on a drum machine to be used for the songs. Fun fact: the songs instrumentals and vocals were written separately from these beats, Björk then chose which beat from the list would go better with each song
There’s 2 versions of All Is Full Of Love, the music video version has a beat running through it, sounds dope. You can find that version on her Greatest Hits.
I’ve been keeping up with some of your reactions since I discovered your videos about Arca, and I love how insightful, openminded, and enthusiastic you are about the artists and their works! For Homogenic, specifically, it’s important to realize that this album was created during a period of isolation and creative meditation for Björk. After Björk was thrusted into the limelight during her Debut and Post era, she felt the need to withdraw from the mainstream and pop/rock sound she’d grown accustomed to performing and creating and go “back to her roots”. She spent about 2 years in a music studio in Spain crafting, formulating, and constructing the beats and symphonies with music producers like Mark Bell and entire orchestra groups as well. Alongside that, she’s gone on record that the album’s central themes and ‘sound’ were love and her home of Iceland. She drew inspiration from the vast, expansive, ever-changing, natural landscapes to create the clunkier, crunchy, bass-boosted “volcanic” beat samples (like those in Joga, Pluto, and 5 Years), the grand, dramatic, almost cinematic orchestral arrangements (like those heard in Bachelorette, Sod Off, and Joga) were inspired by Iceland’s infamous classic symphonies and orchestra, and the more experimental beats and distorted, intense sounds were meant to embody her and the joys of living (like Pluto, Unravel, Nature is Ancient), deviating from the original sounds that critics and the industry had expected of her. Long ass rant and explanation 😂 but hopefully that frames this concept album more in context. Also, love that you’re delving into the B-side/extra songs of the album eras that didn’t make it onto the main albums! If you wanna dive further into her discography and creative process, Bjork released a podcast last year called “Sonic Symbolism” where she dedicates an episode for each of her albums! Keep it up man ❤ it’ll get better and more experimental from here!
Love your reactions! I really appreciate how you talk about the narrative and the themes of the lyrics, I live for stuff like that! I remember listening to "So Broken" during some intense periods of teenage angst and feeling very seen lol. Now I look back and realize how melodramatic I was. Still a beautiful track though!
I think you'd love vespertine lots of choirs and strings on there beautiful melodies Its her love album (and the b sides you should check out for it are generous palm stroke and amphibian)
I think the song Joga is about Yoga. The "state of emergency" is the state of mind in which yoga is supposed to put you, a state of full awareness, full consciousness, full lucidity. And also a state of readiness. There's a reference to the "state of emergency" in the "Dhammapada" which is the ancient sanscrit book that contains all the teachings of Buddha. There its said that in that state of mind you awake to the mysteries of the details. The coincidences make sense, the riddle gets solved, and can understand the story of the universe and how it follows "the dot" (the point of everything that seems to be chaos). And in that state of mind all your hurt is healed.
It's really not the same except talent and indie vibes but you really should listen to grimes visions and art angels, they are two great album swith dark witchies vibes edm for the first one and pop glitch rock for the second (maybe it's better to start with art angelz). She selft-produced both of them and yeah it's fking great. Love your channel btw and thnks for bjork she's major :) xx
Ayyy 🙃🙃👋. Ok , so let's start with the Album Cover Art. As other amazing commenters wrote , she wanted to convey that Winter Ice theme with a Futuristic alien vibe thrown in. Now here's another fact, the look was designed and created by her close friend and world Renowned Fashion Designer, Alexander McQueen, May He RIP 🙏💜. They collaborated on many projects and a lot of her most Captivating outfits. This was, again, another, WTF am I listening to moment 🤯🤯🤩 in my life. 97 was a very Interesting year in music and this album was the perfect reminder of Who Bjork is and was evolving into. Her sound, Production and as You pointed out, lyrics were more raw and vulnerable while still keeping a Hard edge or Shell(like the turtle heart reference) . Overall it's The Perfect Unison of Classical, EDM and unrestrained Vocals while still keeping it Grounded. Although This & Vespertine(next up) kept trading places as my fave Bjork album for many many years. What became my fave is still 20 years away from the release of Homogenic. As some 1 else wrote, All Is Full of Love is a great closing track because the tone it sets is indicative of what's coming in Vespertine. As always Great Job , Ty for posting this(it takes effort to edit) and looking forward to the journey. P.s. Def try to watch her Music videos. They really complete the story she tells in the tracks.
I would say “Unravel” is pretty much about feeling abandoned or ghosted by someone you love. You get the sense that the person she’s talking about isn’t really coming back, yet she still clings to a small hope. I think “make new love” doesn’t necessarily mean just sex, as in making love. Instead it means making new literal love-having to rebuild the relationship, the trust. When she says “the devil collects it” I think she’s means to convey the message that this was destined to happen-as if the devil was just waiting to collect her broken love story. The metaphor about the yarn makes me think of the Greek Fates who cut yarn that represents human life. Whereas the Fates collect whats lefts at the end of a life, the Devil masterminds the end of love. Because what she experienced wasn’t really love, but a deception (hence the reference to the great deceiver, Lucifer).
I think just looking at the cover of the album doesn't do the album art Justice because the inside of the album is a dark like blood read all of the inside of the pamphlet as well I believe is blood red as well so from the exterior you have the icy cover but inside is the warm blood red which I think is supposed to fit in theme with the naturalistic elements of the instrumentation paired against the electronic elements
And Unravel song, as a structure, has this repetitive construction. So songs itself represents the love that is being undone and being done again and again.
Ok handsome i am loving your reactions.... I am going to forgive your underwhelming reaction to Joga, just because of those beautiful eyes and because you Get Bjork, you have a good ear and good taste and you analyze and come up with very good comments. You are well on your way to evolve as a music listener but as a human, because you understand what music gives and you can feel it. I will be waiting for more reactions on Bjork's amazing work, but also want to see you react to Portishead!!!
Not You transitioning to spanish 😅. So Broken is about the Björk stalker Ricardo López that was a fan that tried to killed her sending her explosives and also killed himself. Björk escaped to Spain after The traumatic event and wrote that song.
All due respect to you - stop needing the lyrics to make sense. Suggest you put them away for your first listen. Music is not about lyrics. You know what the song means without reading the lyrics. Trust. Listen with your heart instead of your analytical mind.
No. I have done countless of polls if people want me to read lyrics or not and the vast majority vote Yes all the time. They like me reading it and my interpretations of it. It also makes me appreciate the songs so much more because of the great writing. The writing resonates with me far much more than you know
I always consider “All is full of love” as the introduction to Vespertine. It’s really the bridge between Homogenic + Vespertine.
Really? Can’t wait to see the connection🙌🏽
she confirms that!
Mm that makes sense especially with the track “Hunter” that’s so dope, thank you👏🏽👏🏽
😊
You understood Pluto right away. The sound and meaning. Loved that. Gracias! Can't wait for Vespertine next ❤
I was 10 years old when this album came out, and I made my dad buy it for me because I was obsessed with the cover. Coolest 10 year old ever!

Lmfaooo I mean you ain’t wrong😭 appreciate it, thank you🙏🏽 glad people are taking something new from something they’ve already heard👏🏽

VESPERTINE NEXT OMFG MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF ALL TIME SO HYPPEEEE
I think Homogenic is the perfect blend of accessible and experimental 90s pop. Such a good album. And I feel Vespertine also managed to accomplish this. Love this reactions! 🔥🎉
VESPERTINE WILL BLOW YOUR MIND, THE MOST WELL THOUGHT OUT ALBUM ABOUT SEX INTIMACY AND LOVE, EXPRESS BEAUTIFULLY WITH SUCH A LEVEL OF CARE.
this one is a favorite!!!

I love that you do the B-sides as well.

I think you would like to react to the album "Chaleur Humaine" by Christine and the Queens
There are 4 musicvideos to this album
unravel is absolutely beautiful, top 5 song oat
And Unravel song, as a structure, has this repetitive construction. So songs itself represents the love that is being undone and being done again and again.
My favorite voice of all time, and her best album. If you get a chance, watch her performances in an Icelandic church with the choir backing vocals.

Not You transitioning to spanish 😅. So Broken is about the Björk stalker Ricardo López that was a fan that tried to killed her sending her explosives and also killed himself. Björk escaped to Spain after The traumatic event and wrote that song.
amo tus reacciones pero no cortes la canción tan pronto😟
Björk is pronounced “B-yerk” … rhymes with work or jerk, not pork.
she will never ever top homogenic vespertine and vulnicura ever
