- In this slow Greek lesson, I will give you my personal advice on memorizing and learning new Greek words. First, I would like to highlight some mistakes that Greek language learners tend to make when it comes to vocabulary and which techniques I was using when I was learning English.

I absolutely disagree with you regarding your tips though. It is essential to memorise at least 1000 words before anyone can understand the basics. It is true that after learning 1000 words or so, it is a fantastic idea to then define a word in terms of other words in the same language. But this is impossible to do until you have a substantial vocabulary. This is why your book ended up in the drawer. It was impossible to use until you improved your English to a level where you probably knew 1000 words or so, and then it was extremely useful.
My tip is to create flash cards. This is my advice to students for how to use this very video:
Watch video on computer, rather than on mobile phone, then you can open video in 2 tabs. In one, put English subtitles and keep at normal speed. In the second tab put the video on at 0.75 speed with Greek subtitles. In this way it is much quicker to flip from one tab to another than to keep changing subtitles from English to Greek. As soon as you hear a word that you are unfamiliar with hit the space bar to pause the video and write it down along with its translation.
If you are a beginner a video like this one may take you an hour or two to go through like this but the effort will be well worth it.
After writing down a list of all the words that you don't know I would advice making flash cards of them. I use pieces of thin card/thick paper cut into pieces 2.5cm by 6 cm. on 1 side write the Greek word, and on the other side write down its English translation.
For example, if you are an intermediate student and already know many words, for this video you might end up with a list of say the most difficult 10% which are :

Για να θυμηθώ συγκεκριμένες ελληνικές λέξεις και φράσεις, τις γράφω σε κάρτες και τις βάζω στο σπίτι, ειδικά στην κουζίνα και στο μπάνιο. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο τις βλέπω κάθε μέρα ενώ πλένω τα πιάτα, βουρτσίζω τα δόντια μου κ.λπ. Μόλις μάθω τις λέξεις, αλλάζω τις κάρτες.
Αυτή είναι μια πολύ έξυπνη τακτική για να κάνεις συχνές επαναλήψεις ενώ τελειώνεις ταυτόχρονα τις δουλειές σου

Use the flash word display for meaning in the center of screen on your face. If you put it on the top, it takes time to look at there and we may miss it. Keep it in center. It's difficult but I am getting the gist of learning by this method of comprehension. I am a very beginner.
Thank you for the tips, which could be applied to any language as well. The English subtitles definitely help to grasp the general idea of the sentences, however, when I tried to translate specific words, especially the long, daunting ones, I often got a wrong translation. It would be very helpful to have a reference list for such words in your next great videos. Thanks.
I find frequency dictionaries or word lists helpful in concentrating vocabulary study on the words you really need to know.

Δεν έχω ειδικά κόλπα, αλλά υπάρχει ένα πράγμα που θεωρώ πολύ χρήσιμο: να μαθαίνω τις λέξεις χρησιμοποιώντας πλήρεις προτάσεις, οπότε υπάρχει λίγο πλαίσιο και είναι πιο εύκολο να τα θυμόμαστε ☺️
Μανουελ, θα συμφωνήσω απόλυτα μαζί σου! Όταν φτιάχνεις προτάσεις με τις λέξεις έχεις ένα πιο ολοκληρωμένο νόημα στο μυαλό σου και αυτό σε βοηθάει να θυμάσαι πιο εύκολα τις λέξεις

@@manorueda1432that is great advice. I would write the words in Greek and Greek. Keep writing the words down and then in a sentence. This is part of the way kids learn as well keep listening to the words.

Χρησιμοποιώ επίσης κάρτες flash για τις λέξεις που έχω προβλήματα να θυμάμαι. Το πιο πρόσφατο ήταν «ανθεκτικός».
Κάποιες μέρες σκέφτομαι ένα ουσιαστικό ή ρήμα που σχετίζεται με μια συγκεκριμένη δραστηριότητα που κάνω για να δω αν ξέρω τις λέξεις. Επίσης, η πρόοδος πέρα από το ενδιάμεσο επίπεδο χρειάζεται συνεχή ομιλία, κάτι που είναι δύσκολο να κάνω μόνη μου.
Θα συμφωνήσω.. Κάπου στα μισά της διαδρομής νιώθεις ότι το πράγμα δεν προχωράει τόσο γρήγορα όσο παλιά. Έχω κάποιες ιδέες σχετικά με αυτό και όταν θα διαμορφώσω το project στο μυαλό μου θα τις μοιραστώ και μαζί σας :)
σωστό! μερικές φορές νιώθω ότι φτάνω σε ένα σημείο όπου δεν προχωράω πια . μερικές φορές κάνω ένα διάλειμμα για 2-3 εβδομάδες, άλλες φορές πιέζω με διαφορετικά υλικά. Συνειδητοποιώ ότι έχω προχωρήσει αρκετά για μια ξένη γλώσσα που μαθαίνω με χαρά, ωστόσο θέλω να μιλήσω πιο εύκολα

Why would you need τόσο after έμαθα, couldn't you just say έμαθα απο την πορεία μου? In general I struggle with the use of adverbs and their differences like when to use υστερα ή μετά and how some are also used as prepositions and coniugations like ως.
The phrase is correct both ways. I use it to add emphasis to what I say :)

I agree with all your advices but I would add that using Greek-Greek dictionary must be hard for beginner.. It requires to have certain vocabulary.
I like to listen to the radio in Greek (even without understanding) and when I hear some word or phrase too many times I'm very curious to know the meaning and I check it up in the dictionary. This way it's easy to remember because often I realise what was the sence of those conversations which I've heard. I think it's more or less the way how we learn our first language as kids.

Another way is to listen to the songs (and to sing of course when there is nobody around :) ). Btw, I would appreciate if you could make a video about Greek music. I don't meen nesessarely modern music but overall the most famous Greek songs in Greece, those songs which people really love, which have meaning and also just beautiful songs. When I learned Italian I discovered many great singers of the 60-s, 70-s, 80-s.. there were many beautiful songs at those times.

I would like to add that it's also very helpful to understand the logic of the language, the etimology of the complicated words, the different prefixes ecc. For example the prefix ξανα- helps a lot to understand the meaning of many verbs. It would be also very useful lesson for us to know more of this kind of rules.
This is true. Monolingual learners' dictionaries are helpful, but although their levels can vary you have to have made some progress with the language already before you can use them effectively. I don't know about Greek but for example, learners of English have available the "Oxford Elementary Learners' Dictionary" but I think somebody learning English from scratch would find it too complex.
@stevekaczynski3793 I agree! The complexity of the dictionary makes a big difference and I was lucky to find one designated to language learners. I have it in pdf
This is exactly how I am learning Spanish and Russian. Keep immersing yourself with the language through listening to various types of sources.
Once you do that, you can then start to read and write and eventually knowing the context of words and phrases start to click.

Cause before I said: Θα σας είναι πιο εύκολο
1. ΝΑ μαντέψετε τη σημασία της
2. και το κείμενο ΝΑ βγάλει νόημα.
We say it's easy+ to even in Greek so that's why I am using να instead of θα.
