Its amazing to see Bob Long and Dave Youngblood (DYE = Dave Youngblood Enterprises) on the same team. Two of the top marker/gear creators both on one powerhouse team. My how the game has changed. lol
I played during those years and was at 1993 and 94 World Cup in Orlando. Was a blast :) The reason most of us didn't wear lower face shields is because a paintball could possibly bounce on ur cheek instead of breaking. At this level, every man you could keep alive longer could mean winning or losing the game.
I am very proud to say that I have played in championship games with both the Ironmen (1986-1992), and also with the Paraplegic Turtles in various events in the 1990's. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the better team win with good planning, taking fast field position, patience, good shooting and most importantly (to me) taking such a humble approach about playing the 'top-rated' team. You're absolutely right about this game, Dale, it literally broke the once great Ironmen Team in half. Both Teams went on to have some success, but neither would be the dominating team that the Ironmen were on the early 1990's. Thanks for sharing. -- Rick Cendejas
jefferson johnson if they don't want cheaters on tv then they should ban almost every sport. Because one way or another someone's out there cheating. Whether it be steroids or something else.
Alec Wolf paintball was killed by the google ad ban on paintball advertising around 2012. ever since then we have seen a decline. because they aren't allowed to fucking advertise lol.
I just finished watching Infamous v. Dynasty in 2013 and I saw this in the suggested videos and I cant believe how much the sports changed. Half faced masks and gravity fed semi auto markers. This is crazy!
this is truly the great age of paintball. I wish modern paintball were more like this. slower fire rates and bigger fields. I played at paintball planet/peg leg paintball as a kid. I wish it were still open
PEZ1514 It will take a lot of work to find a format that is playable AND watchable. I think modern cameras will help in the effort. Individual player cams, go pros on quad copters, and massive home TVs to allow for multiple views may do what the cameras/tv's of the 90's couldn't deliver for home viewing. I dunno, I'm hopeful!
Here I am in 2024, reading your comment.... That was 10 years ago..... On a video of a game in 96.... and me thinking/feeling like it was only 10 years ago... Jesus.
The team with the sun to their backs had a huge advantage. The Ironmen team was probably blind as hell the whole time. Thanks for posting the video though!
wooooa! I seen this on tv when a kid back then! Never thought I'd bump into it on YT. Not until now did I know what I ever saw paintball related back then. Very cool!
Awesome to watch this video of the Turtles and of course you Dale. I am proud to have watched you represent paintball in Utah and have being associated with you during these past years of paintball, especially in pump play. Mahalo and always, you the MAN!!!
In 96 I was 11 years old playing in the woods with my friends with my pmi trracer pump. Fast forward 23 years I’m still playing every weekend and still using my automag in woods ball games. My cs2 is for speedball... but I play woods 10-1 over speed because that’s what I grew up playing and there’s something about lobbing a paintball just right through some twigs and knocking someone out.
Freaking awesome :-) this was just two years before I got itto playing paintball, but in 1998 when I got started, electronic markers began to become a thing, that's when angels and rainmakers started to dominate. Boy have things changed these last almost 17 years since this tournament happened.
I think this is still the infancy of tournament speedball. The late 90's to the early-mid 00's was more the "golden days/years of paintball." 1998 to 2004 was an era of rapid growth in the industry, drastic improvements in pb tech, and huge success in terms of publicity and increased overseas popularity. Last but not least was the culture of paintball itself. Not nearly as much style polarization as today, where woodsballers and tournament-style players never play on the same fields anymore. Hopefully the true golden years of paintball are yet to come.
Dale, I really miss your field in Lehi. I hope life is going good and thank you for the fields that gave me the opportunity for the best days of my paintball life.
Xtian C. They've already built housing where the old showdown was. Dale gave it a good go in utah man but the spot just doesn't have enough support in the state.
Damn!!!! These days of paintball were so much fun! Electronic guns are awsome and I love all of mine but the way it felt to play with automags and cockers was unbeatable in those days. If I could go back in time just for a day.......
This was before I got into the game. I started playing around '99 and in '01 I saw hyperball and air ball. The pallet field looks crazy! keeps the play soooooo linear.
Define evolve? This was far more fun to watch and imo required more skill than things such as ramping and just shooting paint in a lane. Obviously the players today are far more athletic
Reading the comments it's crazy how little some people don't know about some of the history of the sport between the players here, the gear, and the companies lol. I started playing the year after this game and this goes back to some good memories but glad to see things have evolved. Those cockers are sexy though
These rules are awesome! Does the NXL have the same rules or is it too fast paced? I recently got into paintball havin a blast but love looking at its roots
this is completely different today, they try to make the all paintballs in their hopper, and they dont spam the bunkers all the time and conserve their ammo
Hence the invention of drop forwards. This was before 4500psi, but just as many pods were being dumped so people would be using 100+ ci tanks. It made the gun feel long as a yardstick, and you could only move the tank so far forward before it would bump into the frame. Hence drop the tank down then forward. It is goofy to see people still rocking a drop w/ a peanut tank, some dudes just cant let go.
Great video... very mythical paintball back then. I just dont get the 5 min and 10 min rule. even the refs were great, they were not afraid to check players all game and even carried around the chronographs
friends of mine played with these guys every weekend in vacaville's "carpet bobs" field. Made squeegees in marty bush's basement. miss those days. if you read this marty, how have you been?
I had a neighbor and he was on the turtles I forgot his last name but I remember that his first name was Matt and i was amazed when I found out because I loved the sport of paintball (and yes it’s a sport)
The golden days of paintball!
It's so different now... I learned to play around 2007-2009 when the NPPL in Huntington Beach was HUUUUUGE
Aaesir Fails at stuff no
Did u play on one of those teams
+COCwith Joshy
he was the captain of the turtles.
+Mad Man Productions oh hello there. love your videos man!
Its amazing to see Bob Long and Dave Youngblood (DYE = Dave Youngblood Enterprises) on the same team. Two of the top marker/gear creators both on one powerhouse team. My how the game has changed. lol
The days of No eyes, 9volt hoppers, un-timed Cockers, Barrels that extended 21 inches long, but the JT flex at 15:17, now that is forever.
I played during those years and was at 1993 and 94 World Cup in Orlando. Was a blast :) The reason most of us didn't wear lower face shields is because a paintball could possibly bounce on ur cheek instead of breaking. Why can't they broadcast paintball on ESPN again :(
Plainly because, paintball is dying. They don't want a sport on espn full of cheaters and gun stealers.
jefferson johnson paintball isn't dying,it is just hitting a low as the industry continues to change
jefferson johnson if they don't want cheaters on tv then they should ban almost every sport. Because one way or another someone's out there cheating. Whether it be steroids or something else.
Devan White o
Alec Wolf paintball was killed by the google ad ban on paintball advertising around 2012. ever since then we have seen a decline. because they aren't allowed to fucking advertise lol.
As someone that only knows the modern game, this is insane. Paintball is back on ESPN!
is that the bob long that created the bob long piantball guns
Yes, that's the man himself!
Was gonna ask the same thing.
yah and dave youngblood made dye
troy noda paintball? Paintball
troy noda yep
I just finished watching Infamous v. Dynasty in 2013 and I saw this in the suggested videos and I cant believe how much the sports changed. Half faced masks and gravity fed semi auto markers. This is crazy!

450/400 Man you and me both
Golden age was 04-06 imo
From one old school to another, thanks for posting Dale! I started PB in 1994. Back when there were 2 guns. Mags and Cockers.
we need to get paintball back to this level of televising! why should tennis, ping-pong, golf, and cricket players get payed more than us?
because they are traditional sports that have been around for ages , look eventually paintball will get their.
paintball is a sport impossible to watch unless ur good at tournament ball
cant get a fan base outside the players

I dunno, I'm hopeful!
Because it's boring as fuck to watch on TV. Not to mention expensive for the average person to play.
Exactly
Bob Long, Dave Youngblood, Bryon Benini, and Shayne Pestana... holy shit
So cool to find this and thanks for reaching out my friend ❤️💛💚
I am soooo old. I watched this when it first aired.
Joshua Pantarotto you are not forgotten
Here I am in 2024, reading your comment.... That was 10 years ago..... On a video of a game in 96.... and me thinking/feeling like it was only 10 years ago... Jesus.
Thanks Dale! What a great look back to a great era of paintball!
I started playing in 1991.
Very cool!
those JT straps and clear proshields though!
I was thinking the same thing. Those look sick!
+askloglog They'll be whippersnappers.
Awesome to watch this video of the Turtles and of course you Dale. I am proud to have watched you represent paintball in Utah and have being associated with you during these past years of paintball, especially in pump play. Mahalo and always, you the MAN!!!
i love how some profiles pictures looks like mugshots, great video! :D so good to travel in time
holy shit no lower face shields
Ikr
It was a game for real men . But I’m sure you could hurt your eye if the ball got up under it the right way .
Thanks very much for posting this! Awesome!!!
In 96 I was 11 years old playing in the woods with my friends with my pmi trracer pump. Fast forward 23 years I’m still playing every weekend and still using my automag in woods ball games. Cant beat a good brush shot
u are my biggest inspiration dale !!!
Freaking awesome :-) this was just two years before I got itto playing paintball, but in 1998 when I got started, electronic markers began to become a thing, that's when angels and rainmakers started to dominate. Boy have things changed these last almost 17 years since this tournament happened.
Wow, what a blast from the past!
Wow! I think I actually watched this game. First time I ever saw pro paintball. Funny to see how different things are now.
20:51 we need more of this in paintball.. sportsmanship!
Faust Xrio95 right? The split of woodsball and speedball kills it. Seriously.
I LOVE these videos - thank you so much for Sharing them!
This is awesome. Love seeing the roots of the sport!
Dale, I really miss your field in Lehi. I hope life is going good and thank you for the fields that gave me the opportunity for the best days of my paintball life.
Sad I moved to Utah after his field(s) closed, they looked so incredible. I hope Dale is able to re-open Showdown again!
Xtian C. They've already built housing where the old showdown was. Dale gave it a good go in utah man but the spot just doesn't have enough support in the state.
Yeah it sucks, but there are many places a new field could be built upon
Xtian C. Yeah, it'll be hard to hang onto them since the state would rather build houses on it.
I played a bunch at his Lehi field back in '99-02ish I think. I drive by where the field was everyday and often think of the great times I had there.
I love watching the glory days of tournament ball matches, back when Cockers ruled the field.
Did you play Chicago NPPL 99 ?
paintballl has evolved so much
Define evolve? This was far more fun to watch and imo required more skill than things such as ramping and just shooting paint in a lane. Obviously the players today are far more athletic
Bob Long the legend :)
Reading the comments it's crazy how little some people don't know about some of the history of the sport between the players here, the gear, and the companies lol. I started playing the year after this game and this goes back to some good memories but glad to see things have evolved. Those cockers are sexy though
Bob looked like a complete badass commando, just check out those power suspenders
those should have came standard with jt pants
3:01 BLABABLABABLABABLABABLAB!
Bob long looks so majestic at this age
He's wearing........... a Shell Suit.
This is the best thing ever.
I remember being sooooo disappointed in that field design. Even back then. :(
Wow paintball before it was more fun , less place to cover , I love it it look dangerous .
BOB LONG AND DAVE YOUNGBLOOD (founder of Dye) PLAYED ON THE IRONMEN TOGETHER?? :'D
Wow
such beautiful sounds from this era of the game, markers sound nothing like this now
Glad they changed to ballon bunkers. Fills out the field. But dayum. 10man is wild.
Love those turtle jerseys!
Damn i cant belive how old this was
I remember watching this while building and autococker spare parts
3:29 " I DONT THINK SO BABYYYYYY" lmao
Wow way cool. I remember peg leg paintball, those were good times. Way to rep Utah paintballers, almost 20 years ago lol
dale price.... with these vids, you have a pod on me.
boy has paintball evolved
Bob longs ironmen!! Blast from the past!
omg those autocockers with right feed hoppers xD
automags and cockers..I remember those days
this is sick
3:38 "just about 10 minutes into this game now" **timer shows its been 2 min and a couple seconds**
Bob long? OMG I'm star struck.
The nostalgia
Lol. They did a commercial break in the middle of the game.
These rules are awesome! Does the NXL have the same rules or is it too fast paced? I recently got into paintball havin a blast but love looking at its roots
Dave Youngblood before dye was ever out lol.
cazperz 15:35 apparently he did already have some products.
Good ole days of mags and cockers dominating the field
i remember watching this in 96
Ahh, the days of cockers, revvies, and vl-2000's
And just goggles instead of full masks.
And Automags!
this is completely different today, they try to make the all paintballs in their hopper, and they dont spam the bunkers all the time and conserve their ammo
Wow! I forgot how big some of the tanks were. Looked like Youngblood had a scuba tank under his cocker.
talk about old school, don't even have lower face protection haha
Imagine taking a random dynasty player back from today to then with complete gear haha
basically had the same though haha. drop an LV1 on the field haha.
What kinda guns do they use
COCwith Joshy Autocockers, think I saw an agd automag as well
bring this style back . and put it on tv speed ball is to boring to watch on tv but this us excitement
+nooloo3000 This is speedball too. What you know as "speedball" is Sup'Air Ball
Omg I would hate to get hit in the mouth while yelling something......yikes
Damn those tanks are huge
Hence the invention of drop forwards. This was before 4500psi, but just as many pods were being dumped so people would be using 100+ ci tanks. It made the gun feel long as a yardstick, and you could only move the tank so far forward before it would bump into the frame. Hence drop the tank down then forward. Great video... very mythical paintball back then. I just dont get the 5 min and 10 min rule.
even the refs were great, they were not afraid to check players all game and even carried around the chronographs
+Ryan Clayton Methodical, mythical is different
wow there were more players back then
wow paintball sure has changed, for the better I think
BOB LONG!!
Bob long that'd made the company was the captain of the iron men in 1996!?
this is so dangerous with half eye protection imagine if they had these now
+Remy Reyes It's not half eye protection, it's full eye but no mouthguard.
The golden age I never got to be apart of
Riley Laursen right. But look at the sport now
Sure classic.
friends of mine played with these guys every weekend in vacaville's "carpet bobs" field. Made squeegees in marty bush's basement. miss those days. if you read this marty, how have you been?
Oh the days when full face protection wasnt required
All the best in one game
Freaking epic.
2:54 THE DUDE IS MISSING A FUCKING LEG!!!! WHAT!?!?!
+Edgyjeans Yup, that's me with one leg. Shows you that it's not all about shooting. It actually takes some brains as well to win.
+Dale Price although the game has changed, this is killer dude. I respect your dedication and your balls.
Dale Price MAD RESPECT BROTHER.NOTHING CAN EVER OUT WEIGH THE MIND.
Dale you opened the stores but you should have designed guns! :)
Bob seemed pissed!😂
if this was on espn why isn't paintball on espy now
For such an exciting sport, its fairly boring to watch.
Still loads better than golf though.
+gesus44 I think if the would do a better job with the camera angles, and include zoomed slow mo replays, it would be much more exciting.
+Rey Figueredo they already do
+Rey Figueredo , are you in South Florida? Former WORR and Bad Karma Player?
Yea I am in South Florida, but haven't really play for any teams
10 years before I was even born.
I had a neighbor and he was on the turtles I forgot his last name but I remember that his first name was Matt and i was amazed when I found out because I loved the sport of paintball (and yes it’s a sport)
We had a couple Matt's that I can think of. Matt Wilmsen and Matt Hambleton
Yeah he let me borrow his planet eclipse ego to play speedball and it worked great
I wanted to buy it from him but I just ended up buying a empire mini gs
wow all those sandbagging ironmen getting dogged. shows anyone can truly win
did this guy create the Bob long guns or what I don't know this I'm new to this sport
yea he did and Dave youngblood made DYE lol...
how fast do those paintballs shoot?
+Marcus Durand 298 feet per second, roughly
Badass as fuck being able to do this with one leg!!!!!
Back when a battery in a hopper was high tech.
