1976 Porsche 911 Targa: Dial 911 To Call This Ex-Police Car

- In the 1970s, the Belgian gendarmerie had its stable of national police cars bolstered by the likes of BMW’s 2002ti, and later on they counted the Golf GTI and Volvo 240 Turbo among their mechanized ranks, but no cop in the country-or the rest of the world-had ever kept the streets safe with the same pace as provided by the 2.7 RS-powered 911 Targas.
Until 1993, the small batch of 911 Targas that Porsche delivered to the Belgian government in 1976 were the fastest police cars in the world, and today they’re some of the rarest; of the original 20, only three are known to exist, with most of the rest succumbing to the rigors of the job. The lucky officers that drove these beautiful workhorses had to pass stringent testing, and Ari Epstein put in two years of his own hard work in order to find this rare specimen. Since cleaning it up and bringing it back to life he’s been sure to drive it often, always obliging the officers who pull the Porsche over so they can take a photo with their retired colleague.

My dad was a lorry driver transporting all sorts of goods through Europe. As a kid I would sometime accompany him on those trips riding shotgun and I remember a trip where on the motorway in either Belgium or the Netherlands a Police 911 car wave us on to go over the speed limit, this was in order for my dads lorry and other lorries to flow better with the faster car traffic - different times back then. It must have been around 1979-1981 and back then seeing a 911 was something special for me.
I will never ever get tired of Petrolicious videos on Porsche's. Another great video about a truly unique 911 with a fascinating history. And although I'm not a huge fan of the "cookie cutters," it's nice to see someone left this car the way it was born and didn't swap the wheels out for Fuchs. As usual, another very interesting car and car story, just like we get every week! Thanks Petrolicious!
This brings back some memories. We've had 509 police Porsches in the Netherlands, but never got the 2.7 RS engined Targas. Lovely car.
We had the 3.6 Carrera's, 3.2, 2.4 and 2.7's , a bunch of em actually: politievoertuigen.nl/Avd/Porsche%20911.html. Pretty cool to see!
I love the ending how the 911 is chasing down the e24 BMW M6!! Both are just gorgeous, Enthusiastic & timeless design classics! I Love it! 😍 👌
Wow. So much heritage all in one video. Love it.
Another passionate owner sharing his story. More please (& thank you)
Dear Petrolicious, plz come down to film in Japan
They should have Honda NSX police cars!! Not that German crap
Watch spotting: Black two tone Rolex Submariner 0:35
Blake Holden i was thinking the same :D Looks gooood.. but didn‘t know the name, only that it’s a Rolex Sub
I love how car guys are almost always watch fans too.
I have a 2$ watch from the cheap shop.
The love for well crafted mechanical pieces !@@thisnameistoolong9169
@@thisnameistoolong9169 we like high quality stuff with moving parts
6:57 ... that'll be 160 Euros please for entering the city of Antwerp with an old vehicle ...
This video... SO WELL FILMED! Amazing work on it. I just want to frame this and have the video play on my wall every day! Also, I recognized the southern part of my province (Zeeland), close to the Belgian border. I love the fact that Petrolicious came to film here in this beautiful environment!
This was filmed by a Antwerp movie Maker and posted on this channel ..
Can you imagine beeing back in the day, beeing a cop, trying to hand out a speeding ticket with a straight face, looking back at your porsche? Cause there is no way in hell those police officers didn't put their foot down every time they got the chance!
Ahh I remember the 5.0 LTR Ford Mustang police cars of my youth . I have an affection for old police cars. Also I love the old air cooled porches
What a lovely police car.
surprised and happy to see that 911 was used for different purposes back then...i wish 911 lives for a long time to come...
What you have here is truly a treasure. And to top it off - a car chase with 911 and M6🤩
No other UA-cam channel captures the vibe of owning a classic car like Petrolicious. Every video somehow makes me want to head out to the garage and start tinkering.
Ever seen Patina? New guys, pure magic.
Man, I love cars, there are a special feeling about the history of the automotive industry, I feel really bad about how the electric cars are killing all of that.
They are like a computer with tires, and zero spirit. Maybe is just me, who knows.
I'm grateful to you, Pretrolicious, for giving us a piece of art in every video.
that phone on the dash look so sick !! imagine before celular era..hahaha. And always another great classic car episode !! Thanks oo
What an awesome car. Look at that phone! The siren! Great stuff.
I love that you guys have videos from all sorts o countries, seeing car people from the country that I live in is so exilirating
Loved learning about this historical car!
Seen this car in real life several times last weeks, verry nice :D
stefan rombouts was tijdens de shoot dan heel waarschijnlijk ;) fijn!
As a belgian guy watching I feel the pride for this car.
Can you please make the next video about that E24. One of the best looking BMW ever made.
Didn't know about this BMW... But I fell in love with it the moment it caught my eye!
That is not how this channel works... They don't do commissions like that!
@@iwontdieofdeath You are right, but wouldn't it be awesome if they did the E24 in an upcoming episode? 😄😉
nice video petrolicious, isn't it also the car that always opens the zoute grand prix every year ;)
Beautiful 911!! Nice chase seen with the 6er!!
WOW! Great vid you guys! Who the hell was on your production team!? Give them a raise!
The cinematography in this one was on Point! Blew my fucking mind!! Great job!
La reine de la route 👍.
Merci pour la découverte, les policiers Belge son chanceux 😊
Ils n'en ont pas profité longtemps, ils les ont toutes détruites en voulant faire des courses-poursuites.
Dammmn so cinematic. Congrats Petrolicious team!
So excellent
Wow, Nick, didn't expect to catch you here. Now that I've got your attention anyway, have a nice day!
'Stranger things like' cinematography! Thumbs up!
500.000 kms (about 300,000 miles) on a 911 Porsche? Just amazing... Una joya.
Peugeot 404 @ 4:12
Awesome car, built like a tank. Wish grandma hadn't sold hers 20 years ago.
Thank you for yet another beautiful car and video ,:)
Nice video on nice car. Targa - must've been a tough assignment during summer.
Could've sworn I watched a Petrolicious clip about a guy finding & restoring a Dutch Police 911 Targa a year or 2 ago, but can't find it now. Maybe someone else remembers too??
Ben, before climate change, people in temperate climates used convertibles and targas in the Summer. That's what they were built for. I imagine rain, snow and winter in general would have been the challenge, but then there's a roof too.
I remember seeing those a lot actually. Great to see one back.
We had the same situation in the Netherlands. That is why I wanted to have a Porsche 911 Targa so badly as a child. So my first car became actualy an old Porsche 911 SC Targa.
again, outrageous shots and insane storytelling...Petrolicious ftw
I would pay to take a picture with this car. It is phenomenal. Loved it.
Please tell who produced that episode? Maybe links on instagram or something

NOMUSCLEGARAGE tellallthepeople.tv, they are on instagram
круто,да?
Eddy SWAANS
Though I love the 60s to 80s 911's as hard tops...this incarnation as a Targa top beats most all!!! Such an epic machine!!!
That blue pickle light is like a cherry on a fresh cake!!!!! 👍
I remember these cars from my early days....good times.
Funny thing that time I didn't pay much attention, and now I would die to get one of these
omg what about those 2002's and 911's at 4.05 just beatiful gotta love it
you beat me to it!
Nice, I really enjoyed that! The 911 930 is my favourite car!
History+character=more value. This is the type of car worth having. You can't buy history into a car. Awesome. Well done Petrolicous, well done.
I watched that video a while ago, its even better than I originally thought, so interesting
It's even got a phone to take calls straight from the Gotham Knight!
Back in those days it was the only Porsche you didn't want to see in your rearview mirror :-)
Now, this is a car that one should call RARE!
This car is made ti drive, that touchs my heart.
I dialed 911 to call this police car and it sure as hell didn’t work... you lie!
No other country in the world? Wrong! In the Netherlands the police drove Porches from 1962 till 1996
He actually said Porsche sold police cars (1000s) all over the world.
Yeah, and Finland had the 356. I never new belgium used targas, I thought that was a Dutch thing
What did he pull the bmw for? Failure to signal?
Great episode!
I wonder if there has been books published on Police vehicles & the history of the vehicles used in Belgium ?obviously in either French or Dutch. I gather that there has been quite a variety of different vehicles for example: Volkswagens : Golfs,Polos,Beetles(Coccinelles/Kevers),Passats and Vans. as well as BMWs,Porsches,French makes, various Fords and even Japanese cars so quite a wide variety.
This video makes me miss Antwerp
Снято шикарно как всегда, жаль у нас в стране не прижились порше .
На какую камеру снимаете?
Actually the Dutch police, the neighbours of Belgium, used 2.4, 2.7 and later on 3.6 Targa's as well..
What a beautiful gem!!!👍👍👍
Thanks Petrolicious !
I love the 90's German police cars from Need for Speed high Stakes
I was thinking Porsche Challenge, actually... ;-)
The Gendarmerie/rijkswacht also had MK1 Range Rover V8's at that time.
Wow - a k-mart blue light special.
Ahh,yes that Sound!!!Delightful!
What an awesome vehicle, and a fantastic story!
The rarest Targa u can get...oh my god
Awesome! But an open roof in Belgium? It rains so often there!
More passionate and wealthier I dare say.
Yeah, he neglected to say that as well as being more passionate than the next guy, you'll also need more money than him too didn't he?
Amazing car, great video.
Very cool car. If someone wants to see one in the metal, there is one in the permanent collection of the automotive museum (Autoworld) in Brussels, Belgium.
911 likes! What are the odds?! Tempted not to hit the like button. Darn it, liked it so much and now there are 912 likes.
amazing cinematography
How cool! Anymore Japanese cars in queue?
Perhaps the essence to true motoring.
These Porsches were actually cars of the gendarmerie, which, at that time, was a policeforce of the MoD.
Very similar to the 911 Targa used bye the dutch highway police (rijkspolitie) hard to find cause when they retired they were sold cheap and either raced to the bare metal or crashed only s few are preserved
RARE.
Awesome thanks
Enjoyed the history and info bout these Porsche police cars. My question is.... why the targa model, as opposed to the hard tops? I’ve yet to see why the targa was the preferred choice. I love an enjoyed both models. Forgive my ignorance in asking this question, I’ve often wondered!?
They must have used both because the vintage film shows a hardtop delivering organs.
In the Netherlands they were always open! In the winter they used white long motorcycle coats and these helmets you see racing drivers use in 60's racing cars. White, with an orange strip, of course.
I think I jizzed. M6 plus this Porsche, unreal.
where are these 3 stipes on B pillar above "targa" name?
Amazing history of car!
What are the names of the awesome sound tracks in this video!!??
The best designed Porsche
Strange how the perception of powerful is relative to the era to which it is applied.
1970`s powerful 210bhp, 1980`s powerful 280bhp, 1990`s powerful 300+ bhp, now in 2021 powerful 700, 800, 1000+ bhp. Where will the power race end ?
Amazing clip😍👏
What a beautfiul garage! 1:39
Great finding 👌👌👌👌👌
the market price for that car?
911 is the best sports car
it's not porsh, goddammit!
Belgians just say it like this :)
Pommes frittes?
as a guy living in switzerland (multiple languages, you know?) i DO pronounce all the german, french and italian cars correct. and as an mx5/miata owner...
why? out of respect!
a french could say "porché" and it would sound right.
@@mixalisstathis274 Well, as a Belgian (multiple languages, you know) I for sure don't use 'the proper' pronunciation, even if if I know them, in there original languages. It is just not done that way, and i am sure you know that very well. A French speaking Swiss person will pronounce 'Mercedes' very differently than a German speakin' person and i dare you, as the mx5/miata owner you are, you for sure don't pronounce 'Mazda' the Japanese way ... Just look it up.
touché.
with people not common to the proper pronounciation of mazda i use the local way to not seem to be (too) cocky, with my close friends or even people from/in japan i do differently.
a french-swiss person for sure uses german car brands in a slightly different way (audi becomes "ohdi"), but there the problem seems more to be the proper use of english (and i do not try to point this out in a mean manner). it's just amusing, living with a french speaking lady i'm forced to listen to francophone radio as couleur 3 (which i love, btw, for it's sense of humor). but all hell breaks loose if i dare to laugh about her english-skills. arrow becomes an error and serge gainsbourg did not better in that interview with whitney houston.
maybe i hate this "porsh-thing" due to the cultural arrogance of the average american, might be.
so you? you came for the pommes frittes?
😉
and me, i'm greek, just for the record, used to live in france, england, germany and italy, but was raised in switzerland. quite confusing but i never got bored. i think my father always insisted to stick to the proper pronounciation of names and brands, except cities and regions. might be a family-thing, who knows. but i still can't stand the impression, people giving a shit about how it was ment to be spoken. including my own name.
Gorgeous Porsche!!!
Great video. Would be the best but he says porsch, which pisses me off. Porsche (the e isn’t silent)
owners on Petrolicious take themselves too seriously
The comment section Porsche fans are worse. "It's not Porsssssh!" 😉
Just WOW. Edit. Car. All!!!
As seen on Belgian roads in the 80’s...
another Porsche video but not so boring due to original footage, partly.
I knew that thumbnail looked familiar
Great video but 240 top speed for a 2.7 ???
240 kph = 149 mph
Но шестёрка всё же круче! E24 the best .
