I actually saw someone talk about kids feelings and everything. Even the slightest thing they do whether it’s trip and fall in front of family members or get laughed at in class because you got a question wrong is so much more traumatic for them than you can realize and this episode showcases that perfectly. Where even though the doll isn’t real he still hurt him and as adults were never understand why this hits deep but every little thing a kid does is 10 times more painful than we can realize.
I remember feeling so dumb yet angry whenever my mom never understood why I felt that way the way I do because I knew she used to be a kid like me, who used to feel things like these. But now I'm grown up and watching this video, I couldn't understand why Clarence felt that way. It's just a dumb doll that he ripped off. Why would he feel guilty? This kind of surprised me because it reminded me of my mom and I.
@@kiv3745 I understand. I still have that mindset. That everything someone does whether it’s the smallest thing gets to me, and it was worse when I was a kid.
I'd like to think its because of a lack of experience. As we haven't been desensitised to anything yet, EVERYTHING we feel has the impact of experiencing it fresh, even if in the smallest facet possible. This, compounded with a still-forming perception of the world, often times has kids doing one thing then equating it with another in their own minds - because they are aware of, say, the concept of "Murder", but not that it only applies to living people, as in Clarence's case where he sees the doll to be just as close to him as a real person is. This would outwardly be expressed only as an exaggerated reaction, when in reality their reaction is even by "adult logic" perfectly understandable (so long as we equate their action with what THEY perceive it as). If Clarence were a young adult and had just been imprisoned because of a close friend then killed said friend in a fit of anger, his consequent depression and mania seem much more reasonable. That's from me having been a kid who went through puberty early and so always got treated older than he really was. It may not be accurate to every kid who's felt this way, but it's my two cents.
I never realized how well these characters were written. I've worked in 3 different schools in my 20+ years of life and have worked with 6 Clarence's, 4 Sumo's, 3 Jeff's, 4 Belson's, and I've worked with 2 Ms. Bakers
I never watched the show but this resonated with me a lot from my own experiences as a child. Children don't understand the world like adults and sometimes the smallest things can have an impact on their world. I can't even count the amount of times I had something happen that was difficult to me, but it felt like nobody understood or cared why, so I get it so much.

For some reason this reminded me about my time in my school where I got punished for not walking fast enough into the building when recess was over. I wasn’t warned, and I’ve done what everyone else has done. Walking back to the building. But the teacher decided to punish me, and it was nothing bad. Just me in class where I can do anything I want. But for some reason I still think it was unjust even after these years and I was too afraid to question authority because it never goes well. Also I never seen this cartoon before.
Lmfao I still remember specific things teachers said/did to me YEARS ago. For some reason as a kid that sense of unfairness sticks with you. It also sucks getting older and realizing how some things your teachers did (or didn't do) were really terrible. I have a narcissistic parent who would yell and threaten me over schoolwork and grades when I was a kid. I was always terrible at math and at this point in 5th grade I was getting consistent D's or F's on math tests. I remember my teacher pulling me aside and saying that she was considering talking to my parents over my grades and I immediately started BAWLING and begging her not to and admitting to her that one of my parents would be so angry and I was terrified. What did this teacher do? Call that parent in for a meeting. Of course like any narc, they acted completely normal but then ripped me a new one when I got home for "telling people they're a bad parent". I blamed myself at the time for not being able to handle my parent's berating. I don't hate that teacher but I will never forgive her making a conscious choice to put me in that situation.
@@seaurchinted The sense of unfairness does stick. Got yelled at/publicly shamed for liking Minecraft in class by my teacher. She was a mixed bag. Last time I thought something was for free from the library so I took an eraser phone. I was showing it off until the same teacher asked me if I bought it. I said “no,” and she politely told me to put it away. When I put it away the library assistant I guess? Don’t know what her job was, just scanning books. She saw me putting back the eraser phone and she was like, “did you steal that?!” She was accusing me of being a little thief without allowing me to speak for myself, what was worse was another class was entering in so they had to watch this old lady yelling at me. She told me to “change,” my color which is some sort of punishment system and for some reason something that I hated doing. Think the levels were green, yellow, orange and red. Red is the principals office. There was another, which was blue, which meant you were super good. Anyways back to “changing,” my color and on the verge of tears the teacher looked at me and politely said, “oh no you don’t have to change your color, it’s okay.” Again, mixed bag. Good memories and bad ones, but hey. Kids are annoying at times, and not everyone can act sane when you have to deal with 10-20 of them. So I don’t blame her. Although the library assistant would always glare at me and the next day she was like, “did you change your color?” Every time I entered she would glare at me. But one day, she was gone and a new one replaced her. Which is weird because she worked for the school for years. But I was super glad that she was replaced and I never had to deal with her when checking out a new book.
Clarence is so underrated tbh its very good and jeff made me for the first ever time hate someone in a show bro got the steve head:]. Good vid as always man
Lesson of the day. Never assume something just based off how they are acting and give them punishments. You never know their side of the story and how they feel. You should always make a safe place for that person to open up, and if they don't want to be patient and let it take time. Never rush. ( if you want more tips ask^^ )
That'll last part at the end of is the perfect massage to anyone suffering from stuff like ptsd and depression letting get to you is never the right option
This episode was really touching and could even be the most memorable episode of Clarence, despite doing something completely out of their comfort zone. This episode brought to light the fact that the school system only focuses on punishing students rather than trying to solve the root of the problem that could have caused them to act so irrationally. Teachers and principals never take mental health into consideration, so they never act on it, and instead just punish students, worsening their condition. Even if therapists are available, they never actually HELP the student, they never give them advice that could solve anything, they just sit there and nod their head while you babble away. The lack of mental health awareness in students has caused self-oof rates in teens to skyrocket as a result that they aren't understood or that nobody will be there to help them. TL;DR: American schools are shitty at realizing when mental health is an issue in students.

I'm surprised people who do videos on Clarence never point out the obvious Autism trait that's implied. Or well, I mean I guess it's not even implied, Clarence straight up just has Autism. Alot of the show is definitely a big narrative about Autism and the way children with it are treated. This episode being one of the more prominent ones in that regard. Like, the kid didn't have a "weird obsession" with some weird doll, it was a hyperfixation he was excited to share with people he saw as his friends. It was cuz of his autism he likely couldn't see the social cues around him, the most obvious being everyone's extreme discomfort with the doll. Honestly I see alot of myself in this episode as my childhood was more or less the same way. Not the....not the doll part, of course. But moreso the constant punishments that always came with just trying to be myself, and it eventually led to me internalizing those punishments as something wrong with me. Constant "outburts", constant "bad behavior", it seemed like even the days where I really really tried were the worse somehow, three to four school transfers, and eventually I just stopped being anything at all. Majority of school is a massive blur to me because of this. And it's nice to see cartoons depict this and how important it is to try and understand "misbehaving" children rather than just eternally punish them.
Honestly, I thought about mentioning the possibility of autism, but it being something I’m really ignorant about, I didn’t dive into this topic But thanks a lot for sharing this, it helps all of us understand more about it 🫡🫡

People are dumb, present company included.
Even if you wouldn't get upset about it, surely you'd understand why a kid is upset.
I never realized how well these characters were written. I've worked in 3 different schools in my 20+ years of life and have worked with 6 Clarence's, 4 Sumo's, 3 Jeff's, 4 Belson's, and I've worked with 2 Ms. Bakers

I can't even count the amount of times I had something happen that was difficult to me, but it felt like nobody understood or cared why, so I get it so much.

Glad you enjoyed bro!
@@seaurchinted
The sense of unfairness does stick.
I love how the one girl who can't stop stroking her hair stops when she sees the doll. A lot of the kids' quirks stopped out of the sheer horror.

The giving away of one's possessions is a sign of suicide, and I'm sure any adults that were watching that episode with their kids, younger siblings, young cousins, nieces, nephews, grandkids, or a kid that they were babysitting were deeply disturbed by it and had to change the channel. I know I would've told my younger brothers to turn it off. Cartoon Network probably got some angry phone calls from a lot of adults who were upset by the episode. Hope Cartoon Network issued a content warning before the episode aired to give a people a chance to change the channel or turn the TV off.
After a bit of research, it seems that this episode is a depiction of one of the showwriters negative school experiences.

Honestly, I thought about mentioning the possibility of autism, but it being something I’m really ignorant about, I didn’t dive into this topic
But thanks a lot for sharing this, it helps all of us understand more about it 🫡🫡
