- One year and three months have gone by since I started my Animation Mentor journey and it's amazing how much you can learn... I know I still have a really long way to go and I'm really excited about it, meanwhile, this is the best I can do... for now...
Lillian, thank you very much! As I always say, it's great having these kind of comments because they push me to keep learning and getting better. Thanks!
Really an awesome progress reel! I also love the intermediates that introduce the mentors...really inspiring and fresh - will follow you from now on... Keep up the great work
Great reel. Nice natural acting and good use of the animation principles. One of the better reels i've seen (and also love your intro animation lol).
You are becoming so good! Keep up the great job!
Excelente trabajo!
Your new shot had me laughing out loud - better than most animation you see coming out of Universities these days. Cant wait for your final demoreel.
Really good animation, the render made it even better, good work!
I just signed up for the Maya Workshop at Animation Mentor partially due to your work, Juan :)
Amazing work!! 👌
Awesome work! I bet you've worked on some great stuff since. I've got Ray Ross now - Class 4!
Hey Ollie, I’m very glad you like it! I have worked on great stuff indeed. Animation Mentor is definitely top notch when it comes to learning animation. Please say hi to Ray and good luck in your assignments!
"Best I can do for now". Your best already looks amazing as hell. Any better and it'd be more human than a human xD.
you have done amazing work on BG too..cooler presentaion man ;)
Gracias! Me alegra que te haya gustado =)
Thank you man and thanks for subscribing too! Half of the background stuff is simple matte paintings and not actual 3D geometry which would have taken longer to render
very amazing..so good..really inspiring
Glad you like it :)
awesome real bro animations are really good keep it up i wish i cold do awesome animation like this.
Zac, thank you very much man... Sure thing, I have all of the blocking phases, a couple of them are already on my channel, just take a look or let me know which one you'd like to see.
Holy crap! You are amazing!
Still far from amazing but I appreciate it a lot! Thanks!
Juan Carlos Navarro No, truly brilliant! I love the Indiana Jones one you did. The lighting is great!
I likey like Mikey. Going to site now.
Great work, by the way, Juan.
I just checked out 3DTi and their student reels don't compare to this at all. This is amazing.
Wow ! that was awesome!
I'm just a beginner and really want to reach your level!
keep on!!!!!!!!!
Thank you very much! Well, I was a beginner too a couple of years ago and still working hard to get to the next level. You just gotta be patient and animate a lot. You too keep on :)
AWESOME MAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!
In the beginning, slow the hair slick down, should be a smooth move to show hes confident, when its rushed it looks like hes trying to actually fix his hair instead of a stylistic move, great job either way, but its the little things, I always recommend body language books. What you do it and how you do it, I.e. How fast or shaky, can set all your character apart.
Haha, it might change for my final reel, but thanks a lot for your subscription and comments ^_^
Some things are modeled and some others are just painted... The lighting is actually pretty simple once you know the basics. It's only 3 lights and a sphere with an HDRI as texture for extra color and light...
Haha, thanks... The idea evolved a lot from the first approach, hopefully for the best results, but I'm sure you know about it... Thank you for your kind comments mate, those keep me inspired all the time!
:O so inspiring. how do you do all that cool lighting stuff and scenery? it makes it a lot cooler
Hey Juan! I hope it's going well, mate. I was wondering if it was possible for us to have a quick chat sometime? Mostly about your experience in AM. I'm a student at animschool and your reels were a major inspiration for me back when i was working on my own to develop my skills. Regardless, have a nice day!
hey juan...u r work are ausome. m n learning animator. can u post a tutorial of clip or just ablocking of it. ?
Where do you learn to lighting and rendering like this ?
This is amazing, also I have a question... Do you model and render those sets yourself? Everything from lighting to acting is perfect
Thank you very much man... Answering your question: Yes, I did model and render the sets myself, I just used a few downloaded props for one or two shots.
That's fantastic. You have some awesome stuff, I'm planning on enrolling in AM this winter!
so good
Thank you!
Goog job Juan...i really enjoyed your animation and graphic look of your reel...where are you working for ? i mean which company.?
Btw...a lighting tutorial would be absolutely appreciated...even if it is only containing of some written steps..Greetings...
yeah, it's a great thing this animation mentor, but a bit of expensive unfortunately. it's not for everyone, i guess.
Your work is just enviable, really great!
Yes, it's expensive and yeah I agree, it's not for everyone. Fortunately there are some other less expensive options out there to study animation the proper way. At the end, it is an investment more than paying and getting nothing in return.
Also, thanks a lot for your words, I truly appreciate them.
I have a tutorial on lighting in my channel; it's in spanish though, but I guess you can pretty much follow what I'm doing there. I will upload an english version when I have a chance to translate it.
thnks man..u rock! :)
which software did you use and more also pleases can u just do like five tutorial on that software please i love to be animator but i still need more experience on animation tutorial
This was done using Maya. Animation is not about the software, it's about knowing how to animate regardless of the program you use. So my best advice would be to take animation classes.
Hola Juan!
Saludos :D
+Nico Burmester Hola Nico! Muchas gracias.
Saludos!
Do they teach you how to render ?
Now they do, the lighting/rendering program started a couple months ago... Check it out at animationmentor(dot)com
Saludos... Buen trabajo...
I SAW THE PIXAR EASTER EGG BALL !!!
congratulations man!
awesome lighting and render. really a good artist
very cool idea indiana jones. love it
how you make the hunter scene background? painting in photoshop?
Cheers
Henrique Ribeiro Thank you for the kind words! The background is a matte painting, yes; only the character and the main tree are actual 3D geometry
+Juan Carlos Navarro Gómez hey man well done :). Quick question if i'm very poor at art can I still be an animator
+Juan Carlos Navarro Gómez like they do everything on computer hey we don't need to draw
Is it you Esha ?? Anyways, thank you very very much, I don't think they're awesome but I'm working on it so they can be better in the future
Prices have changed since I graduated, but now it costs around 10K. We use Maya and yes, I am animating for a film right now. Thanks for the kind comments by the way
hey juan.....i m student animator. plz can i know how u render ur shots. which lighting. plzz.
Lol that being said I'm sure you're a pro by now, (just saw the date lol)
Hey man... Thanks for the feedback and you're right about the hair thing. No matter how old this thing is, I can always learn from looking back at my old work to improve my animation. Can't agree more on little things making the difference. Cheers!
Hhh no way I am failing all this when I start my course animation mentor. Ripping my ass of for it now
Hola!
Can you create the tutorial for our learning that how to interact between two 3d objects
chirag modi Sorry man, I don't quite understand your question very well :/
I guess he is saying how to in between idk either
Hi muy ñame Andrew im 8 years old i like it 🎭🇱🇷
Which Rendering software is used ?
Mental Ray

Hello... Juan.. great work .. as always..
I am the guy who stole ur idea from am reel... I really apologize for that..my intention was not to hurt you .. I took it as a reference.. but the other post is of my production demoreel... nothing is stolen in that.. so I request you to delete that comment of yours... 'coz i use that demo for job offers... I seriously apologize to you ... but if you think taking references from the work of artist like you is wrong...then its okay.. I am just less in experience... so it is important for me to take references of reels like one of these....last thing.. plz del that comment...Thanks.. and all the best
The only person you're hurting is yourself as you're ripping off someone else's work. Taking references is not bad at all, but a reference is just that. There's a huge difference between taking references and copying the setup, the layout, the posing and the acting choices. I mean, seriously? Even the blackboard texture is the same. I'll delete the comment in your reel and I hope you understand that you shouldn't do this again.
