    For this series, we will be making leather journal covers in a veg tan and a chrome tan option.
    In this chapter, we will be making the pattern for a field journal cover and a portfolio cover, Chuck will demonstrate how to measure so you have enough room to stitch and create a pattern for the inside flaps.

    Hey Chuck. Never been into leather before, I discovered your videos last week. The moment I got home on the weekend I told my mom we need to go find a leather store! I only have a box cutter, rivet setter and snap setter so far but am already enjoying the hobby. Thanx for the great videos please keep it up!

      I got a beginners kit of tools when I was 12. That was 48 years ago, still have the tools and added more over the years. You can make all kinds of stuff that will blow people away.

      Hello,
      We would suggest using the same concept as the journal cover, use the measurements of the album you will be covering to create your pattern.

      There are all kinds of wedding related visuals that would work nicely for the cover and spine (floral, bells, corner designs, celtic, stamps with a date or a quote…)! An oval or round picture of the couple would sit nicely in the center, or offset, with some kind of design around the pic and flowing into the balance of the cover. Tooling the couple would be incredible, but, that is WAY
      out of my skill level. I hope this helps and I hope it’s a beautiful gift!

      @@WeaverLeatherSupply Have you done any videos on doing an inlay? I've searched but have not found one. I want to do a journal cover with a star shaped exotic inlay!
      thank you SO very much! I ADORE Chuck!

    Great, but how could cut panels and simply glue them onto the exterior of the book?

    • @WeaverLeatherSupply
      @WeaverLeatherSupply  4 роки тому

      You could do that, you just wouldn't be able to replace the journal or notebook once it's been filled.

    I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I want to make a cover for a standard 7.5x9.75 Composition notebook. I followed your example, measured out the notebook 15x9.75, added 3/8" all around the notebook but when I test fit the outer cover I have a piece that is 15 3/4" and flush to the edges of my notebook. Can you explain what I'm doing wrong? I'm going to have to cut another piece that's an addition half inch or so, and use the piece I have cut and died for a moleskin or something. I think where I'm messing up is not fully understanding adding for the thickness of the leather, 4-5oz veg tan.

      Hi Nathan,
      Everything in leather sounds so “cut and dry”…and it’s not…ever! I’m sorry you’ve had trouble here. I imagine it’s the bends. If you have a good 4/5 oz. it can, technically, be 5 oz. or a bit more and this can really draw up distance on the spine. Additionally, the thickness of the book/journal can add more than what it looks like it possibly could. Usually, 3/8” is enough to give us an additional ¼” and then an 1/8” to sew, but, the bends and the thickness may add just enough to chew up ¼” or even 3/8”. I think you have the right idea by adding another ½”, but, check it by cutting a 1” wide strap of the same leather and use that to gauge your length. That will get you very close! See if this helps?

    I love your videos, I just wish, oh I wish!! that Americans started using metric system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    This stuff with inches drives me nuts!

    Don't make the journal cover like this. I did but you can't journal in the journal because the button connector stops the journal from laying flat. I should have seen that coming, but being a beginner I just did what the series showed. I appreciate these videos but I think this series is bad for a beginner. I used veg tan and after dying I could not find my chisel holes and had to do them again. Does the leather swell when it gets wet?
