@22:17 my issue with this hot take is that Joy was purposely unlikeable. She was the “villain” of the story. She tries to abandon sadness for instance. She had to learn the error of her ways. So to say Inside out is bade because Joy is unlikable… is completely missing the point of the movie

    • @JustKen-lm5ts
      @JustKen-lm5ts 7 місяців тому +3

You said exactly what I was thinking I can understand not liking her but that’s the whole characters arc if she was likable throughout she would feel shallow that’s why the scene where she is in the memory dump is so important it’s the moment we see her realize her mistakes and that sadness is important it helps humanize her in way that makes me like her and sets up the scene and the rest of the movie perfectly

    • @kadenprows8079
      @kadenprows8079 7 місяців тому

Furthermore I think it's so interesting that a Pixar film had our protagonist also be the "villain." That's so cool!

    • @TheNumbersGuy-bm6bt
      @TheNumbersGuy-bm6bt 3 місяці тому +1

I personally wouldn't go as far as to say Joy is the villain, more so a misunderstood protagonist, her main intention is to make Riley happy which is not a bad goal but in the context of where she is she needs Sadness more and Joy just didn't realize that, not to mention Riley's mom already put kind of a burden on her to stay happy during a stressful situation which only put more pressure on Joy to make her happy

    • @joostine3720
      @joostine3720 2 місяці тому

You guys are all misunderstanding the comment. The first comment was saying _Riley_ is unlikable, not Joy. And the second comment saying Joy is the villain isn’t a negative thing nor is it a hot take, Joy was intentionally the antagonist that was the whole point of the movie

  • @SlipNJimmy
    @SlipNJimmy 7 місяців тому +27

The people who say Woody acted out of character in Toy Story 4 don’t actually understand his character at all. He’s not a one dimensional loyalty robot that automatically defaults to the same programming no matter the situation or circumstance. He’s a character with real emotions and internal conflicts. Every single movie challenges Woody’s beliefs and world view.
Woody acts “out of character” in every movie compared to how he acted in the previous movie. Woody in TS3 is DRASTICALLY different from Woody in TS1. He is constantly growing and evolving as a character.
Toy Story is my all time favorite film franchise and TS4 only made my love and appreciation for the world and characters a lot stronger than it already was. It’s not perfect. I do think it is overall the weakest of the four, but it’s still a great movie.

Finally, somebody who understands what the movies are trying to say instead of taking things at face value and reacting like an entitled man baby who thinks they know how to write characters better than actual screenwriters. Then again, that's most of the animation community in a nutshell, isn't it?

I find it interesting that a lot of criticisms call certain movies bad because the main character is unlikable, but that brings me to a counterpoint with a little film called "The Emperor's New Groove"
A movie where you could argue the lead is the MOST unlikable lead in ANY Disney/Pixar film, yet its deemed a huge classic because its humor makes you skim over that with how fast paced and clever it is.
I would argue that having unlikeable leads gives you that room to see the growth and development of the people you're going to be around with for the longest. If theyre already inherently good or perfect, its creatively more challenging to work in a storyline that could be as compelling as, say, Inside Out or Toy Story.
By showing them at their imperfect stages first, it makes the journey all that more fulfilling when Joy embraces Sadness and Woody befriends Buzz.

The Zurg twist is the biggest mistake Pixar has made since Cars 2. Anyone who wanted to see Lightyear wanted a film like the early 2000s Buzz Lightyear Star command Series, and instead the choice to deconstruct him and focus on his flaws shows that they'd rather focus on his mistakes rather than the good things he accomplished.

As a fan of your channel, we’re way more on the same boat with the last three (I guess 4 as I think Toy Story has overstated its welcome starting with the fourth movie… and then came Lightyear and Pixar really killed it with that one for more reasons than it’s money losses, making us wonder how they could possibly be worse at this rate… and then they announced the potential of turning into a reboot and sequel factory, which you did a great video about) hot takes not being too spicy than the first thirds of them.
      P. S. If you Chandlers saw ElectricDragon505’s videos (which you probably might), you’d really find out that he’s another one of those “Disney shills” (or for lack of a better term, a UA-camr that while ambitious as he does Animation Lookback and did The Epic Mickey Files and The Art of AniMat, can also be defensive of the current state of Disney even if they were better before the 2010s-2020s before they became more frequently safe and lazy to the point where my appreciation for the otherwise imperfect Universal only got bigger and bigger even if he may be more critical towards what they make, and this is coming from someone who used to watch a lot of his content as a teenager. Then again, he is the same guy who defended Lightyear over Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie, take for instance.)

Not trying to make this sound like a hot take (because it's not the hottest of the takes today) but I really dislike Incredibles 2.
It looks decent on the outside, but when you compare it to the first Movie (I consider the first to be Pixar's Masterpiece) you really start to realize how much of a downgrade is. The story is not really compelling or interesting, a lot of the arcs are half-cooked, and the worst aspect of it is that all of the parr family characters are insanely downgraded.
It's also a movie that is way too safe and just wants to pander to audiences, it never takes risks. The first movie has amazing twists like the superhero genocide reveal scene or high tension moments like the plane chase sequence or the suicide attemp scene. In the second movie the higlight was a bunch of funny jack jack moments that didn't even contribute to the main story.
It's not the worst one, but I would agree that it is the most dissapointing Pixar film. I believe that they should have made a time jump to see grown up characters to see the story actually go somewhere, not just another superhero movie.

Alright here are the Hot Takes:
Soul is extremely overrated. I find it long, boring, and very scatterbrained. It could’ve had a slam dunk of an ending but it didn’t take it.
Elemental is the worst Pixar film and Incredibles 2 is right behind it.
Cars 2 is in the upper half of Pixar movies. It’s extremely fun and over the top. It’s a Pixar movie that isn’t trying to force you to get emotional at the end, it just wants to be cool and fun and I like it for that. It’s a very unique film in the Pixar catalogue.
After Toy Story 3, the only Pixar movies that felt like home runs to me were Inside Out and Coco. Nothing else has hit that top tier since.

My hot take is that a lot of the beloved Pixar movies from the late 2000s- early 2010s (Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up, Inside Out) feel like bloated shorts. Ratatouille in particular feels likes a tech demo, while Up gets pretty bad after the first few minutes. All the best parts of WALL-E could be condensed into a short without all the fatphobia and repeated Hello Dolly songs. And I still maintain that "Riley's First Date" is better than most of Inside Out (although I do love me some Bing Bong).
Also, I guess liking A Bug's Life is a hot take now? Seems like this one has not aged well for most people. I like how it has a legit, non-twist villain.

  • @AetheriusComics

About your point on Turning Red, I absolutely agree! Why would parents be okay with wanting their kids getting all of their needs met from their friends. It sounds more like a 'choose your family' theme that strongly exists in the non hetero community.
Also, from my point of view, Turning Red was a non hetero focused film. Think about it this way. One of her friends, the tall one who looked kind of like a boy. Did she really have a big crush on the boys in the bands? Or was she putting on a front in order to stay close with her female friends that she's in love with? This is a common theme with non hetero girls who are only into girls, or barely into boys. All of the Turning Red girls were coded this way.
Even the mother was coded like a woman who married this strange frumpy man because of social conditions, but nothing about the couple showed any sign of romantic attraction. Nothing wrong about the film, the problem is the dishonesty of how these kinds of films are marketed to make people think it's designed for them.
And yes, what's with all of these deconstruction of male characters and turning them into broken old men? It's all for a different demographic.

She's still the living embodiment of happiness after all so she's mostly a friendly person at the end of the day. It's just those negative traits of her personality were just obstacles she needed to overcome within herself. Now imagine if she truly was the villain of the movie. So fixated on trying to make herself Riley's default emotion that she would callously push away the other emotions just to make herself feel superior and would especially treat Sadness like a punching bag moreso than an important asset to Riley's mind. I actually agree heavily with this. Woody is so damn unlikable as a protagonist in a way that really makes me not wanna see him succeed at all. People always seem to bring up Joy in that she's an unlikable protagonist, but Woody is so much worse in TS1. Joy is doing what she does to make Rileys life better, whereas Woody is completely selfish. I understand it's the single most important animated movie like ever, but from a purely critical pov, it's the weakest in the franchise for me.

I would say that Toy Story 4 is more necessary to the story than 1. 4 is worse but only because of the old characters. Andy has left Woody, now he isn't the favorite toy, so he can do what he was tempted to do. People hate on TS4 because TS3 was the perfect ending. I would argue it works better as the second last. TS4 just screwed up with all the previous characters. 2, 3, and 4 all tackle similar themes, none of which are in the original.

All the emotions she could feel were telling her to run away. Anger would of reminded her how angry she was that she moved. Disgust would remind her of how much she doesn't like San Francisco. Fear would remind her of how scared she was of school in San Francisco. Joy would remind her how happy she was in Minnesota. But sadness would make her realize how much she would miss her parents if she left. Also, what do you mean it is boring? IMO it is the funniest pixar film.

Joy being unlikeable is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Her being unlikeable for supressing the other emotions is not a valid critique. The movie calls it out as a character flaw and she realized what whe was doing was wrong, so then she lets the other emotions also control Riley because she realized there importance. It's like saying Mr. Incredible is a terrible character because he ignored his family. Sully is a terrible character because he focused on boo and ignored Mike. Simba is a terrible character because he didn't want to save the pride lands. Emperor Kuzko is a terrible character because he was a tyrant. Its called a character arc.

My thoughts on these hot takes:
    1. Toy Story 4 is not an abomination but it is not good and bottom tier Pixar. The only Pixar film I found to be an "abomination" is The Good Dinosaur.
    2. I understand the divisiveness of Turning Red but I'm personally on the positive side as I really like it. The message of the movie wasn't to put your friends over your mom to seek help but rather to accept your family instead of turning your back on them for your friends.
    3. This was me back in 2013 when I was 9-years-old and even had an MU party for my 10th birthday in 2014. I still love the movie as of now and as a college freshman (incoming sophomore) myself, it hits harder to watch a movie about a college freshman. My only flaw with the movie was how they did Randall dirty.
    4. I go back and forth between that but I think Incredibles 2 is Pixar's most overhated movie. It's way better than what people make it out to be for.
    5. To quote Winston Deavor: "I disagree strongly" nothing else to say.
    6. Ok this is too much for me. Sure, Pixar started releasing misses after Toy Story 3 but saying they should have stopped after that is too far. There are modern Pixar films that feel like classics such as Inside Out, Coco, Soul, etc. (why does no one talk about the latter two?)
    7. Cars is my favorite in the trilogy and I view it as a guilty pleasure but that's only because I'm not a Cars fan at all. This franchise is not for me.
    8. Lightyear is a good movie and gets way too much hate, but the Zurg twist wasn't good. It made no sense. But I will say that wasn't my biggest problem with the movie. My main problem with Lightyear was how the tone felt inconsistent. In the first 30 minutes, you could tell the film wanted to be a grounded and serious movie but then we get introduced to characters who turn out to be comic reliefs making goofy ahh jokes and dumb decisions. The 2nd half of the movie didn't feel in line with what the movie was striving for.
    9. I'm not mad that someone called Inside Out the worst but I hate the reasons for it. Riley being mean spirited in the movie is just Riley being human as human beings can be assholes. And the fact that your brain can be a mess is just a part of life. I do think Inside Out is amazing but I prefer the 2nd one.
    10. I do think the Toy Story franchise is a tad bit overrated in a sense that there are better Pixar films out there than the Toy Story movies like The Incredibles, Wall-E, Ratatouille, etc. I even prefer Soul and Coco over the first 2 Toy Story films. Toy Story 3 is easily my favorite one.

I’m surprised by all the hate I see Up getting. It’s my comfort pick along with Cars for my 2 favorite films from the studio. Russel, Doug, Carl, and Kevin are just fun to see go on an adventure with. I also love the arc that Carl goes on with Ellie and it leads to a emotional and satisfying end to his character when he finally lets her go and decides to live, the metaphor of him throwing away his stuff to get the house to float is perfect, he’s finally getting rid of the baggage that’s been holding him down his whole life. Doug, Russel, and Kevin are all very lovable side characters too, especially Doug.

Is there going to be a sequel to this video?
    1. Inside Out is an amazing and thematically emotional film, but I couldn’t get into its speculative elements.
    2. Coco is Pixar’s worst film, but in terms of general movie going experience (no Pixar bias), it’s just an okay film. You can still like Coco. But if anyone says Elena Rivera, Miguel’s grandmother, you are a monster!

  • @Complexitor37

My hottest take is that Nemo is the worst Pixar film
Massive Problem #1: Only three scenes are crucial to the plot. The scenes where Nemo gets taken away and when he reunites with Marlin, along with the turtles scene that transport them across the ocean, are the only scenes in the movie that couldn't be easily written out of the script. The shark scene, the seagulls, the jellyfish, even the fish tank scenes don't affect the plot. Marlin does find the mask during the shark scene, but that could happen in any other scene. Also, neither of the 2 climaxes affect the plot. The net scene and the chaos docter scene are both unnecessary if the fish had escaped.
Massive Problem #2: The adventure across the ocean is run entirely on luck. They accidentally run into the sharks where there just so happens to be a mask that tells him the location of his son. Marlin just so happens to run into a fish that inexplicably can speak whale and can read. (It isn't explained how she can do either of these things until the sequel.) The Angler fish that almost kills them gets trapped by the mask completely by accident. They run into a group of fish that can tell them where they need to go to get to the current that brings them to Marlin's son. The Jellyfish form a convenient opening for Marlin and Dory to escape. Once they get out, they faint and wake up in the current they were trying to get to. Eventually they end up on a dock next to a pelican that can take Marlin to his son. Marlin's journey to find his son was run by luck, not by him making decisions, like it should be.
Massive Problem #3. All the characters are horribly written and 1 dimensional. Marlin is both extremely annoying because of his lack of redeeming traits. He is overprotective and has a cliche backstory. He isn't funny. Dory has short term memory loss. She can inexplicably read and speak whale even though all marine life appear to speak English in this film. Crush is shown to be "so cool" Bruce, well, Bruce gets his own section. The fish that inexplicably have perfect coordination to make shapes mock Marlin for asking them to stop quizzing Dory on ocean animals so they can help him find his son. The worst offenders are the tank gang and Nemo. The tank gang includes worse Doc Hudson, germaphobic fish, germaphobic crab #2, fish obsessed with bubbles, starfish with no traits, a puffer fish, and a fish that thinks her reflection is her sister. They send Nemo into the cleaner because of a obviously bad plan made by someone who notoriously makes bad plans. What could go wrong? Nemo, scared of a girl he heard a legend about from fish he just met, attempts to execute the plan he had nearly died the last time he tried. Also, why did the fish call the bubbles the "Ring Of Fire?" Those are bubbles. You have a fish that is inexplicably addicted to bubbles that would tell you.
Massive Problem #4. The shark scene makes no sense. An over intimidating shark subverts our expectations and makes us think that he is going to eat them. No, he runs a group of sharks that want to quit eating fish. But then why was he so overly intimidating to the fish. And why did he make Marlin and Dory confess to eating fish? Based on the way he saw them first, he clearly didn't mistake them for sharks. Scenario 1: Bruce originally thought they were fish, but then changed his mind and thought they were fish. Scenario 2: Bruce assumed that Marlin and Dory are cannibals. Scenario 3: He thought they were some other predator of fish which would explain both scenarios. Also, why did he assume Marlin was lying, but believed Dory. He didn't know about her short term memory loss, which would only make him less convinced if he knew.

She got uprooted from everything she knew and tried to adjust. The ONLY way for it to be 'overall boring' or to see Joy as the villain is to miss the point of the movie entirely! everything doesnt have to be action pack all the time, sometimes the movie is in the dialogue and character development. FOR REAL! like just bc you have to have your brain over stimulated and entertained all the time, does not mean every movie is boring if it doesnt match your dopamine addiction. Joy is JOY for a reason, its going to conflict with sadness, the the POINT OF THE MOVIE!!! she learned at the end why sadness is important. This movie depicts and shows emotional development in the best way! Rant over

    My opinion on each take:
#1: Mixed Feelings; I wouldn’t call Toy Story 4 an abomination, but it does have some flaws in my mind that hold it back from being a great Toy Story film. I think it’s good, but very flawed.
#2: Agree; Turning Red is a movie that I just didn’t connect with at all. I thought the message was terrible, I didn’t care for any of the characters, and it was targeted too heavily to an audience where it wasn’t relatable for me.
#3: Mixed Feelings; I think MU is good enough. I think the message is good, and the building friendship between Mike and Sully is a lot of fun, but the story feels much less imaginative because it feels like a generic high school sports movie.
#4: Disagree; I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, I think Incredibles 2 is kind of sloppy. The storytelling is pretty messy, the villain is totally nonsensical, and the plot is just a rehash of the original.
#5: Disagree; I think Finding Dory is fine, I don’t have any gigantic issues with it, but again, it feels derivative of the original film, so I’m more likely to rewatch Finding Nemo.
#6: Heavily Disagree!!! I still think Pixar has a good track record after Toy Story 3. Sure they’ve had their misses, but their films just went from special to good in my eyes.
#7: Disagree; Cars 2 is a film I grew up with, but it’s probably the dumbest Pixar movie. If they had made this a spin-off direct to video movie which had Mater in the lead, that would be fine with me, but as an official movie, I don’t think it works.
#8: Mixed Feelings; The twist does feel like a big retcon of what was established in Toy Story 2, but I think the twist serves for Buzz’s character development. I don’t love the twist, or the movie all that much, but I don’t think it’s horrible.
#9: Couldn’t Disagree More; Joy is meant to be somewhat antagonistic but gets to grow, it’s a beautiful and creative story that’s relatable.
#10: Disagree; While I think the film itself is quaint compared to animated films nowadays, it’s historically important and that cannot change. It’s still a lot of fun, I understand the concept of Woody being unlikable, but I think his arc works.
This took a while, I hope you enjoyed my voice in the conversation. 😮‍💨

My thoughts on each of these
    1. I agree with the haters. I think Toy Story 4 is one of the worst Pixar movies.
    2. I don't agree. I think Turning Red is a fun movie. I don't think it's the best one, nor the worst one, I consider Turning Red to be a middle tier Pixar movie.
    3. I agree! MU had a great message. The haters are just middle aged men who are way past their college movie phase. But to many of us, MU is probably the first college movie that we'll ever watch. And it is great!
    4. I don't agree at all. Incredibles 2 feels like a direct-to-video sequel that just got a big budget and a theatrical release. It's not as big, epic, and grandiose as the first Incredibles movie.
    5. I don't agree, but I kinda get where people are coming from. When I watched Finding Nemo and Dory back to back, and not gonna lie, both felt pretty equal. I just like Nemo a little more than Dory. Probably due to nostalgia.
    6. I don't agree at all. While I do understand the saying "you either die as a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain", Pixar is still a business. And if they just decide to call it quits after Toy Story 3, that's honestly a pretty stupid move to make as a movie studio, or business in general.
    7. I don't agree. However, I also don't agree that Cars 2 is the worst Pixar movie of the bunch. Because it's far too enjoyable compared to something boring like The Good Dinosaur, Toy Story 4 or Lightyear. Cars 2 has a lot of action going on.
    8. I'm split. I still think the Lightyear Zurg twist is really really stupid. But I do agree that it does create the conflict of the movie. The idea that Buzz learns from his mistakes was sorta neat, but it was executed horribly. And I agree with you that Disney's old man deconstruct cliché is getting old, and they should stop ruining our childhood characters this way. Lightyear is my least favorite Pixar movie of all time.
    9. I don't know what to say. I don't think Inside Out is Pixar's worst movie, but I kinda agree with the problems these people brought up. Inside Out 2 hasn't released in my country yet, so I can't tell if it's better or worse than the first one yet.
    10. Yeah no. Toy Story is film history. These people need to understand how important Toy Story is to the movie industry. While I do agree that the characters are flawed, people need to remember that pretty much every character in this movie goes through an arc. Woody learns not to be jealous. Buzz learns he isn't a real space ranger, and that's okay. Andy's toys learn that everything was a big misunderstanding. Sid's toys learn to stand up to their oppressor. And Sid learns that toy lives matter. So yeah, everyone starts off as a flawed character, but they do go through an arc. So I kinda agree about the unlikeability part in the beginning of the movie, but they improve by the end of the movie, and the characters become far more likeable in Toy Story 2 and 3, which is definitely one big reason why I prefer Toy Story 2 and 3 over Toy Story 1. But I don't think it's overrated.

While I enjoy some Pixar movies, I will always kind of have a personal bias against them, just because of the fact that they basically killed 2D animated movies from Disney and made them just go fully with the CG animation. And I just don’t really like the way CG animated movies look. I think 2D is so much better and I kind of wish that Disney stuck with that style for their movies and just let Pixar do the 3D style.

Do not like Incredibles 2. All the lessons Bob learned about family and letting go of his past as THE superhero to be part of a team and family just disappear overnight. But the second film starts the next day. It has almost no real character development or meaningful plot elements. It is just an empty popcorn flick. With a truly awful villain motivation. Why wouldn’t she be most mad that her dad was too stupid to have his super hero phones in the safe room? And supers were already illegal. Why would she try to make them legal just to make them extra super duper illegal? It is just a bad movie. Not just a bad Pixar movie but a bad movie. Like most of the post Endgame MCU - empty super hero flavored junk. Bird is one of the best directors and I cannot believe he came back for that. He has my two favorite Pixar films, probably the best MI movie and the Iron Giant. Just baffling.

Also, I think "Incredibles 2" has more action in it when compared to the original. I think they definitely stepped it up a bit with more action sequences that are in the sequel. And there are definitely a lot more superheroes in it when compared to the original, as well. I mean, you've got all of those different superheroes with so many different super powers in the movie. And they're utilized quite well when the Parr family is on that big boat near the end of the film. The Parr family is the Fantastic 5 taking on a bunch of different superheroes on a big boat in the finale! And it's just totally freaking awesome! I do love the original "The Incredibles," but "Incredibles 2" is my favorite of the two. Both movies though are some of my favorite Disney films & Pixar films ever. 🦸‍♂

I haven't even seen Inside out, but even I can see the charm of it. I've watched, maybe, the last like 20 minutes or so and I think it's a genuine heartfelt movie.
Cars 2 and incredibles 2 are both some of my favorite pixar movies. Cars 2 I get the hate, because it's pretty inconsistent in its tone and it's kinda cringe, but i really like Lightning's character arc and the message about corruption and fossil fuels. Now incredibles 2 was a movie where I never understood why it got so much hate.
Lastly, I think toy story 4 is a pretty good movie. Nothing great like the og 3 but not the monstrosity everyone makes it out to be.

Here are my reactions to these flaming hot takes:
    1: Toy Story 4.
While I don’t think it’s an abomination, I do agree that it cheapens the perfect ending of Toy Story 3. It ultimately just feels so unnecessary!
    2: Turning Red.
I am yet to see this film so I can’t comment but from I have heard, I don’t think I will like it anyway and I have no real interest in watching it anytime soon!
    3: Monster’s University.
While I don’t think it’s a bad film, I do think it fails to capture the magic of what Pixar is known for.
It’s just a rather forgettable film that never really leaves much of an impression on me.
    4: The Incredibles 2.
I definitely disagree with this one!
The first Incredibles is one of my favourite films period.
I was so excited for a sequel and while I didn’t exactly hate it, I did feel both disappointed and underwhelmed by it.
    5: Finding Dory.
Another one that I wholeheartedly disagree with!
Finding Nemo is an absolute classic and I have always loved the themes it explores.
I think Finding Dory is a fun but forgettable film that doesn’t hold a candle to the original!
    6: “Pixar is dead”
I think Pixar has struggled a lot recently with failing to capture the magic of their past films but in no way do I think they are finished as a studio!
Pixar is an incredibly successful studio despite some recent misses and disappointments.
They just need to get back on track with what they used to be good at!
    7: Cars 2.
While I don’t think it’s as good as the first film, I do think it is a little over hated in my opinion.
In all honesty, I would say that I prefer Cars 2 to Cars 3!
    8: Lightyear Zurg Twist.
I think the film had potential but it ultimately squanders this and not only is it a disappointing prequel to the far superior Toy Story films, it’s also a rather frustrating watch!
    9: Inside Out.
Unpopular opinion here but I think Inside Out is a tad overrated!
I think it’s a good film but not a great film.
It’s just never really been a film I hold in high regard.
    10: “Toy Story is overrated”
The first 3 Toy Story films are some of my favourite animated films as well some of my favourite films of all time!
They are light years (pun intended!) ahead of any animated film that comes out these days.
