Not only does he prove that he's still a badass, but he proves that he was badass the entire time!
He purposely played the "idiot" to make his soldiers think, thereby creating a stronger army.
Genius!
Plus he acknowledged that it was a double edged sword and got serious once someone finally decided to challenge his command.
Yeah, also the Resolute movie is a way better movie than the 1987 animated film. Also, I read the 1987 animated movie was non canon due to being bad reviews and a terrible story.

I gotta say, this version is my fave as, like you said, it fits his original description. "Most dictators and would-be Napoleon types are hampered by the need to pretend that they are pursuing a noble and just cause. Cobra Commander doesn't have that problem. This guy's in it for the money and the power, and if anybody else is interested in these things, they can pick up an assault rifle and get in line behind him"

Well I think that's because most people believe there was a single Cobra Commander, when in fact there were multiple people who assumed the post and it's obvious that this ain't the original snake 🐍 commander but in fact a psychopath pretending to be him, but he still needs to be recognized as him to have the legitimacy in the command structure, Gi joe probably know this as well, but most average Cobra commando members might be unaware of the original true purpose of the Cobra organization and the original identity of the true Cobra commandor.

The cartoon slot format really didn't do justice to Cobra Commander. For cartoons of the time, he had to lose, _every time,_ in 18 minutes or less or risk losing the audience.
I don't really understand why the bad guys could never once score a victory outside of a two- or three-part episode, but that's the way producer thinking was in the 60's-90's - and f***ing hell could Cobra Commander have been _delicious_ as a villain had things been different..
Villains in 90s cartoons started to win more often. Examples: David Xanatos, BW Megatron and several villains from DCAU
90s cartoons, the DCAU and Young Justice villains and were way better then past and current Villians in cartoons

@@blackbulls8783 Apparently, his cowardly persona was just an act to weed out any competent traitors. And judging by how things turned out, I guess it worked, what with Major Bludd being dead and Dr. Mindbender and Serpentor not being seen at all in this series.
In a way, the previous CC was less evil because he was actually able to enjoy the good things in life. He was more of a hedonist, which, in a way, made him less dangerous to the world. Give him his good food, good wine, good sex, his fat wallet, and his big house and he was happy.
The new CC doesn't give a flying fuck about any of those things, he's a man on a mission and his mission is to be the most powerful and most feared man in the universe and that's all he cares about. He's a mad dog.
Why the fuck haven't they made a sequel to this?!? This is by far the best G.I. Joe ever made since the originals. Instead there's the shitty live action drivel they continue to crank out and they ignore this? WTF?!?

I relish the thought of this Cobra Commander blaming Serpentor for the failures of Cobra and remains silent when Serpentor begins his rant on what a grave mistake the Commander has made, but half way through Serpentor's rant on how he will be punished Cobra Commander slits Serpentor's throat with a dagger hidden under his tunic in front of the other members of Cobra watching Serpentor's lifeless body fall from throne, while he murmurs "You have served your purpose long enough," and then he turn to the other members of Cobra with their faces reflect off his mask and cover with blood asking if anyone will take over his command.
I can imagine it going something like this.
Baroness: And you botched our desert campaign
Destro: We had won but you countermanded my order
Baroness: your medaling brought us defeat again and again and again
Dr. Mindbender: You're not just a fool you're Cobra's curse
Xamot and Tomax: Inept insuficent in excusable.
Cobra Commander (laughing): It seems as though my act has served it's purpose, and each of you shall be well rewarded for your courage to speak up as you have.

I needed a decoy to draw their attention away from me and to preserve my cowardly appearance. But it seems my act has gone on long enough, and the time has come for me to resume my command. It was nice of you to keep my seat warm Serpentor.
Serpentor: You'd do well to curve that insolent tongue of yours Commander, if you know what's good for you.
Cobra Commander: Don't make me laugh. You who poses the knowledge of Kings and Generals yet refuse to learn from their defeats. You, a mere child pretending to be a man. You are of no further use to me.

the 2000-2010 revivals of old shows, turning questionable almost comical villains into credible threats. Cobra Commander, Shredder, Mumm Ra, Skeletor. in this era, you knew not to fuck with them.
The 2003 series was made sure it was done right because co creator of the comic Peter Laird step on as the story consultant

@@murderouskitten2577 The 80's, like every decade, had its share of horrible music. Rick Astley, anyone? As for cars, did you ever see what they did to the poor Mustang in the 80's? It went from muscle car to the automotive equivalent of mom jeans. As for beer, they sold the same beer then that they do now. Budwiser then is the same as Bud now. Or Rolling Rock or PBR or whatever you drink. We tend to focus on the bad stuff of today and focus on the things we liked from back in the day while forgetting the bad stuff. We remember GN'R and Metallica and forget Wham! and New Kids on the Block.
But yes, this Cobra Commander is by far the best we've seen on any screen. The only time they did him better was in the Larry Hamma Marvel comics from the 80's. They did a great job with him in the comics up till about issue 50.

I really like the design for this Cobra Commander. It takes elements of all of the previous designs & manages to create a menacing look.

This was an awesome mini-movie. I just wish they had made an entire series like this. This was the single best version of G.I. Joe that we've ever seen.

Cobra Commander has always been my favorite GI Joe character.
Okay, this CC is cool and Charlie Adler does a great job here, but I still really like the previous versions of him. Chris Latta and Michael Dobson's performances always bring a smile to my face because they're just so fun to listen to. Besides 80's Cobra Commander gave us "Cold Slither". You can't beat that.

I am seriously liking this new cobra commander, the design is very sleek and threatening, yet keeps to the original design, the voice work fits with the motions of the character and I like this voice here better then on bay's starscream
The writers of the Sunbow GI Joe said Cobra Commander didn't come into his own until they stopped trying to make him Hitler and wrote him like Yosemite Sam. This CC works too.
Whoever wrote Resolute must have figured out how to write a Hitler-esque Cobra Commander.

"for children" is simply a crutch for cheap animation and sub par writing. its all an excuse. you can turn any cartoon idea into the most interesting piece of media with a budget, creativity and love for the source material.

Cobra Commander: If you are the Emperor, then consider me... your usurper. Allow me to let you in on a secret: COBRA was ALWAYS mine. The fool you refer to was but merely a facade, meant to inspire in our forces what you abhor: Initiative.
(Cobra Commander rises back up, looking down derisively on Serpentor)
But in the end, I suppose I was being too subtle, given that 'the progeny of kings' was too engorged by childish fantasies to see it.
(Serpentor finally bleeds out, falling to the foot of the throne. Cobra Commander walks up to the throne and takes a seat, using Serpentor's corpse as a footstool.)
Cobra Commander: Get this garbage out of my sight (as he resumes his seat on Cobra's throne) Does anyone else have a problem with my leadership? (stunned silence) Good, now we have work to do. Now, assuming that there are no other challengers...
(The rest of COBRA stands motionless and silent in shock and horror, having witnessed everything that has just transpired.)
Cobra Commander: Good. The time for such folly as passed. For now, there is business to attend to, but first, know this: Should any of you decide that you would like my position, remember the example that Serpentor has so graciously set for you. 'This, I command.' (Laughs) Pathetic! Now, for your punishment!
(Entered Cobra troopers, who siezed the rest of Cobra Command).

He sounds like a younger version of Lord Zedd from Power Rangers.
This has got to be the scariest version of Cobra Commander. This is definitely someone I would be afraid of. Not like the one from the 80s.

1) it doesn't upset the fans
2) it means that Cobra Commander is now the sole active Cobra leader (since destro, baroness etc are captured and the rest dead) - It would have been great if there was a post-credits scene where CC is shown alive and well and its revealed that he planned this all along.
3) It just goes to show how badass he really is if he can survive such an explosion at ground zero!

amsablan Well the original GI Joe storyline was a Nick Fury Jr vs HYDRA story that later got adapted for the GI Joe toyline. Nick Fury Jr and his group became GI Joe and HYDRA turned into Cobra.

The real Cobra Commander & not the faulty 80's cartoon version. The comics were around before the animated series. The tone was altered for the animated series. The comics were more darker than its animated counterpart. Oh! Yes,Cobra Commander did kill Serpentor in the comics. He also murdered his own son.
Zartan killed Serpentor in the Marvel comics.

People, this is a darker version of GI Joe. Serpentor of this timeline would be a complete nightmare, he already had above human strength in the cartoon and he feared nothing. If written correctly he would kill the Joe's by himself and Cobra Commander would just stay in his place. If written correctly.

This was a natural extension of the storyline - many years later - updated for today... Think of it as an 80s version - with BALLS!

I've got the collected "Cobra Command" storyline and "The Origin of Cobra Commander". And you're right. From what I've read so far and from what I've gleaned in interviews with the writers and artists, this new Commander is a freaking nightmare.
