Just going through my late father's engineering tools and I found a slide rule, which confounds me. I spent countless fascinating hours as a child watching him at work with his intricate designs yet was never allowed access to the "tool drawer". Now, as middle-aged software engineer, I feel like "Dr. Who" in trying to figure out these vintage devices - particularly a Dietzgen Slide Rule #1732. Hoping your video will be the Rosetta Stone. Thank You!

Still have my N1725 that I purchased in Fall 1967 as a Freshman Physics major at U of Md. Although generally used it, I was seduced by the department’s 4 station Wang calculator (labs) and then later by the Univac 1108 timeshare at UOM. Recently got back into the N1725. You are right about addressing the mathematical fundamentals. How much I have forgotten!

I have my Dad’s Dietzgen N1733. I adjusted it and now it’s very accurate. I have the same black case. I think the case flap is leather and the case looks like very thick cardboard. No micro-adjust screw on the end.
I have a K+E Mannheim type rule (1939) which has S L T on the back of the slide. The slide can be pulled out and flipped over and read that way besides against the index underneath.
I’m learning my Dad’s rule and I’m thinking this is good so K+E must be better. Then I acquired a circa 1939 K+E rule and 2 K+E rules I found in the unloved old tools drawer in the office. They aren’t as good as the Dietzgen, the surface feels softer, more printing issues, crooked text, faded text. The Dietzgen is built under stricter standards, straight text, not faded, surface feels better.

This is a great series and I appreciate it. I think my dad had the 1725 and but don't know what happened to it. I would like to find one to add to my very small collection. Thanks for doing these videos!
