I lived in Chicago for 30 yrs. My deep dish go-to is Lou Malnati’s. Only would have it once or twice/ yr. The tried and true is tavern style, cut in squares.
We always did Lou Malnati’s for special occasions like birthdays and graduations. After each of my parents’ funerals we hosted the after meal at Lou Malnati’s. It was a nice way to end a sad day.

I think the debate has value as a fun, friendly rivalry between cities. As long as it's all in good fun, and no one's takin it too seriously, it's just a fun cultural thing for people to engage with. You end up with videos like this series, where people actually go and taste test and compare classic pizza places (or burger places, or hot dog places, etc). Of course, taken too seriously, the debate is meaningless. Which type of pizza is best? That depends entirely on the taste of whoever you ask.

@GP80888 There's a place in Cary called Uncle Jerry's that makes a great deep dish called sweet heat. They drizzle a spicy honey on it and it's amazing. It was reviewed by Dave Portnoy and he gave it a high score.
Lived in southern California all my life, and the only actual Detroit-style pizza I've ever experienced was from Little Caesar's. I started making my own and it's so much freakin' better, lol. Especially when the cheese "crown" comes out just right. LC's doesn't even really do the cheese crown, I think they just smash the dough up against the pan near the top to make it thinner and crunchier, but almost no cheese actually runs around the edges.
Stuffed pizzas are on a totally different level, I agree with ya georgeK. I was confused at first thinking, what are they thinking, but seen george's post and it click, deep dish is different than the stuffed pizzas. stuffed pizza is about 2-3 inches deep/thick I would say but so darn good from the right place.
The chunk Tomatoes and the Buttercrust are the primary reason Lou Malnatti’s wins 90% of all Chicago deep dish cook offs held in recent years. Eat the crust first and be amazed…it ain’t just for holding the sauce & cheese….it’s really edible. Add the sausage and you got the BEST in Chicago.
Lou Malnati's is the best. By the way, I usually get their thin. Still buttercrust, but not so filling. Your Pequods was not burnt, that's the carmelized cheese on the crust. Really good, but yeah, I don't want that much bread. And while it is almost as good is Lou's, it doesn't reheat nearly as well the next day.
Being from Chicago, I've only had deep dish pizza a handful of times. That's mostly a special occasion pizza, and for tourists and family that comes from out of town for a visit. Me and my family usually eat thick crust Chicago style pizza cut into squares. That's probably why I like Detroit style as well, and the fact that I have family from Detroit. 😅 The deep dish is cooked with the sauce on top because of the extended time it has to cook because of the thickness, they don't want the cheese to burn.
As a Chicagoan, my personal favorite has always been Giordano's. It's been awhile since I've eaten one - but, I would always get either the "Giordano's Special" or a deep dish Spinach pizza. 😀
Giordano's will always be my favorite, but I recently came across "Waldo Cooney's" out in Lansing and their deep dish is just as phenomenal lol. Take Care ...

Heyyy my people!!!! Glad to see ya!! All three places are awesome for pizza!! Very different but great in its own right!! I'm more of a thin and crispy pizza type like NYC style! Enjoy!!!!
There is no such thing as bad Chicago pizza. Only less good Chicago pizza. :) We're actually known for two different types of pizza - deep dish and tavern style, which is a thin and crispy square-cut pizza. Most locals will tell you that tavern style is the "real" Chicago pizza and that deep dish is for tourists or occasional splurge.
Oh, I'm glad you enjoyed your Chicago Deep Dish Pizza experience! Welcome. Pizzeria Uno is a huge tourist attraction loved by Chicagoans, too. Pequod's (Pee-Kwod's) Pizza is a favorite hangout for the locals. The "carmelized" cheese is an acquired taste, though. But Lou Malnati's is like Pizzeria Uno's for "the rest of us" who can't cope with going deep, down into Chicago. Lou opened up in north suburban Lincolnwood in the early 1970's and branched out from there. Wonderful Pizza! I hope two packed your yoga mats! LOL. Cheers.
That deep dish you were looking for is Giordanos….and that one is technically a stuffed pizza. Also a couple spots also are thick thick. Loumalnatis is the thinnest of deep dish in Chicago. Peaquods is a mixture of Chicago deep dish and Detroit cheese crust (my favorite thick pizza).
I'm a New Yorker living in Chicago and my preference is NY style first, Detroit style (total sleeper) second (obvious potential biases apply). Deep dish is ok if it's the only option but if anything else is available it's what I'm going to go with. The more typical pizza I've had here is similar to NY style 'tavern pizza' which can be pretty good.
@@sychavez7269 Considering it's an opinion I don't really have to explain. If you prefer deep dish that's fine. And there are a ton of toppings you can get on NY style pizza, no idea what you are on about with that one.
I love Pequods, although, the deep dish is more of a treat I only have a few times a year. Any other time, you're right, the thin crispy, tavern style just lets you enjoy more of the pizza. You can pile those little squares on your plate, and somehow always manage to go for just 1 more piece .
What I love is the variety, Chicago more of a pizza pie, Detroit is more of a pan style, New York is a thin crust... all are good and I enjoy them all based on my mood. Chicago hits the spot when I'm looking for a heavy wintery warm up. When I'm in a need of comfort and just need a food hug I go for Detroit. On a warm summer day New York style is a perfect fit. Why pick one? Of course based on where you live in the world only one or two might be available so I think that is why people become so stuck on one... it's a memory of home.
Ahh you would have loved the Pequod's (Pea-Quads) in Morton Grove IL back in the days with the founder, Burt Katz. Check him out. Burt sold Pequod's and opened another pizzeria aptly named Burt's. While Burt has passed away, the current owners studied under Burt and carry on the tradition. You will find other YT videos about Burt Katz. Deep dish pizza at Burt's is the only one Anthony Bourdain liked.
Giordano's Pizza is one my Favorite Chicago pizzerias,. They are so good they have expanded to other states. I'm really surprised it didn't come up on your radar.
Chicagoan here, the debate is always Lou's vs Pequods. Personally, its not close. Lou's is real deep dish. Theres a reason Lou's has 50+ locations vs just 2 for Pequods.
My favorite is Lou's thin crust spinach with caramelized onions. Yum. I live about 15 minutes from Pequod's, but I have never eaten there. I need to try.
Just because there's more of one place doesn't make them better! There's more McDonald's than any other restaurant and they taste like crap😂 Sometimes the more restaurants you have the more you're going to skimp on the product
@@ik7578you smoking good good if you think detroit better. And keep in mind chicago has more than deep dish we also have thincrust and pan pizza. Idk why people think deepdish is the only pizza we serve.
You have to go back to Chicago and try the tavern style/thin crust pizza. I’m originally from there and I would recommend (cheese, sausage and maybe pepperoni) in no particular order: Aurelio’s, Vito & Nick’s, and maybe Home Run Inn or Falco’s. There should be 2 categories of pizza from Chicago: thin/tavern and deep dish. I totally agree with your choice of Lou’s! Everything just tastes so fresh 🍕! I hope y’all get to go back!!!
Now you’re talkin' THATS real Chicago pizza with sausage. I agree about Pequads vs Lou’s…no comparison. We have tried both and PEQUODS isn’t even close to Lou’s….I wanna try Bert's next. Forget uncle Jerry’s as well. You want pizza…go to Lou’s
How do you know you prefer thin if you never had deep dish?? Just a question... and never try deep dish from any place that's not CHICAGO!!! You should order a Giordano's pizza from the website... get the special, sausage, green pepper, onion and mushroom.
If you ever come back to Chicago, there are 2 chain staples you missed and one smaller chain that is my personal favorite. Giordano's and Rosati's are the chains. And not far from Wrigley Field is D'Agastino's (also know simply as D'ag's).
As a Chicagoan, Lou’s is absolutely in a tier above all the others. Watching this, I really appreciated how respectful you both were about the food and yet not afraid to be like “this is not for me”. You should give a rating for each!
I grew up on the Chicago area and always loved the deep-dish pizza as a kid. Now, in my 40s, I prefer the polar opposite - a very thin, crispy crust cut into squares.
I lived in Chicago in the early 90's for grad school and we learned quickly to avoid the touristy pizza joints like "Uno", "Due" and "Malnati" with the touristy wait times in favor of less known but just as yummy spots. My 2 favorites were up in Lincoln Park, "My Pi" (actually the mathematical symbol) and "Bacino's" for their unbeatable Spinach pizza. I can almost taste it...almost.
I've lived in Chicago since 1956 and I've had deep dish maybe five times. My go to is almost always tavern style, thin crispy crust with lots of cheese and toppings. For Deep Dish I prefer spinach, mushroom, and onion.
Deep Dish is for tourists and special occasions. Locals typically eat Chicago Tavern Style Thin Crust cut into squares. Please give that a try instead. You won't regret it.
Im from Chicago and I didn't know it had a special name lol! I agree, Deep Dish was never a regular thing for my family. We always ate the Father and Son pizza.
Detroit with well-done pepperoni and crispy edges...tough to beat. But Chicago with a full round of sausage under the sauce is pretty spectacular as well.
I grew up in NYC and thought that there were no comparisons, but the pizza in New Haven, CT is really up there. Sally's and Pepe's are great, but I love Modern. US Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro recently testified on the floor of the House that New Haven has the best pizza in the US. Olympic, World and US Figure Skating Champion as well as Yale graduate, Nathan Chen is apt to agree
My favorite American pizza is Detroit Pizza hands down. It's spectacular ❤❤❤ I can't wait to see that video! Neapolitan is my all time favorite and my top choice. 😋🤤
The ingredients need to be layered the in a certain way: Copious amounts of cheese is always the bottom layer to form a water-tight seal and prevent the crust from getting soggy. The most common topping, Italian sausage, is usually applied raw because the pie needs to cook for a long period anyways and precooked sausage can become overcooked. The sauce needs to go on top, again because any other ingredient would scorch cooking for that long. Though the logic is kinda circular, the pizza needs to cook for so much longer than thinner pizzas entirely because it's so thick.
I’m not from Chicago but I do know that San Marzano tomatoes are usually used in tomato sauces/pizza sauces. That’s likely what you’ll get from Chicago/Ny pizzas
My favorite over thin crust and deep dish is stuffed pizza. Pretty much deep dish pizza, but on top of the cheese and other “toppings” like sausage is a another (very thin) layer of crust, then the tomato sauce is put on top and baked on. Sooo good! Chicagoans eat thin crust pub/tavern (i.e., cut in squares) pizza the most. Deep dish is more periodic or special occasion pizza. I love Connie’s Pizza the best, but sadly all of the locations except the original were closed. I eat Giordano’s mostly now for deep dish. Somebody probably said this already in the comments. Pequod’s is pronounced “pea-quads” Glad you enjoyed the pizza!
Great job guys! I love your reviews the very first pizza, deep dish that my parents took us to was Uno’s still absolutely love it. Also, I get more Lou Malnati’s since I have one in my backyard. Also love Lou’s and one you didn’t try, it’s called Giordano‘s. But maybe next time you’re passing through but great job.!
I’m a Lou’s guy myself but I love the burnt crust from pequads. Next time you’re in town try to get the tavern style thin crust. That’s what most of Chicagoan’s eat when they go out for pizza. Deep dish is for when family comes in for a visit.
right deep dish and stuff are for family or friends that come to visit. we Chicagoans that live here do tavern style or pequods. also most of the tavern pizzas that are good are on the southside
Y'all some lame Chicagoans if you only eat deep dish for only special events and family gatherings. I switch off weekly(Fridays are pizza night): deep dish one week, tavern style the next, and on and on.
I at a lot of Lou Malnati's when I lived in the Chicago area. I never made it to Uno's. My favorite was Gulliver's on Howard street, but they are no longer there. Now thin crust pizza in Chicago is a whole nother discussion.
@scottsoloway I count myself lucky that I have been able to try deep dish pizza at all of the pizzerias you listed. I've always liked Lou Malnati's pizza. However, after trying other deep dish pizza joints including Rocko's, Nancy's Pizza and even Uno's, Gino's East and the other big names in deep dish I think Burt Katz's creations and collaborations tasted the best. I never had a chance to meet the man himself, but I give a tip of my hat to him, and now I just make my own deep dish pizza from the dough to the gravy and according to my family and friends, say they all love it.
@@ursusjyn If Burt were still living he would tell you that his pizzas are pan pizzas, not deep dish. One distinguishing feature is the thicker bottom crust.
I live outside Michigan City and when my dad and I go to Chicago for a Cubs or Sox game we always go to Giordano's. We have tried Uno's and Gino's East. Not heard of Lou Malnati's or Vito and Nick's. At Pequod’s I’d go for the thinner tavern style. 🍕
I know you were only doing deep dish today though.
I love Pequods, although, the deep dish is more of a treat I only have a few times a year. Any other time, you're right, the thin crispy, tavern style just lets you enjoy more of the pizza. You can pile those little squares on your plate, and somehow always manage to go for just 1 more piece .
In Herman Melville's Mody Dick, the Pequod is the whaling ship most of the book is set on. PS - Great video!!!!
Chicago Deep Dish is the way to go!
I love deep dish pizza as a meal and New York Pizza as a snack😃🇺🇸💙
The best thing about Chicago is that has *all* the pizza. Stuffed, pan, pub-style, Neopolitan, Detroit style, NY Style, etc. Something for everyone!
If you want a really thick pizza, you need to try a stuffed pizza in Chicago. Giordano's is the best!
11:00 is considered part of the lunch rush, after 1:00 is a better time
Good to know for next time. 😀
Great point , Well made! It's great to appreciate the different styles of pizza based on your mood!
I'm excited for you guys to try the detroit deep dish pizza! My state! Detroit Deep dish is amazing!!
We did! Hope you check out our video. ua-cam.com/video/d3iZgUvwE9s/v-deo.html
@thebritstry I did and enjoyed it! Glad you guys are enjoying yourselves!
So glad your getting to try this. Thanks for the great content.
Giordano's Pizza is one my Favorite Chicago pizzerias,. They are so good they have expanded to other states. I'm really surprised it didn't come up on your radar.
I agree. Lou Malnati's is my go-to for deep dish.
It was delicious! especially the butter crust. Thanks for watching
Lou Malnati’s is where it’s at. The butter crust is crisp and buttery, and the cheese is so perfect!!
So True! Lou Malnati's is the bomb! That butter crust and cheese combo is unbeatable! Thanks for watching
Never been to any of these places but Pequod's looks like it would be right up my alley.
There's more McDonald's than any other restaurant and they taste like crap😂 Sometimes the more restaurants you have the more you're going to skimp on the product
lou's is deep dish and pequods is Pan and it's different.
You have to make reservations at Pequods just to be able to get in. Lou’s has been sold out the Chinese just like portillo’s has. Sad.
So McDonald’s is better than most burger places, because there are more McDonald’s locations?! 🤡
The problem with Chicago deep dish is that you'll be in a food coma after eating it! 😂 I'm intrigued by Detroit, though
Deep dish pizza can definitely be heavy, but it's so worth it! Detroit Video will follow very soon! Thanks for watching
Detroit is better it's just not as well known as the Chicago or NY styles.
@@ik7578 comes down to preference. I've great pizzas in both cities.
@@ik7578you smoking good good if you think detroit better. And keep in mind chicago has more than deep dish we also have thincrust and pan pizza. Idk why people think deepdish is the only pizza we serve.
@@tnxjesus I KNOW Detroit is better, and I don't have to smoke anything like you to think otherwise. 😂
You gotta try New Haven pizza too. Modern aPizza is good, but I’ve heard zeneli Pizzeria e Cucina Napoletana is even better.
Thanks for sharing! tavern style pizza sounds delicious and we would love to try it. We just ran out of time on this trip.
Thank you for sharing your pizza preferences! Your enthusiasm for Lou's is contagious. We will have to look up Berts next time. Thanks for watching
Looks so good. I've never had deep dish pizza - I prefer thin and crispy more. Looking forward to Detroit and NYC.
How do you know you prefer thin if you never had deep dish?? Just a question... and never try deep dish from any place that's not CHICAGO!!! You should order a Giordano's pizza from the website... get the special, sausage, green pepper, onion and mushroom.
@@bigernmacrackin6176Exactly 🤣
Come on Detroit! My favorite.
Up next!😀
I a peqoud fan. You should have gone to the original location in Morton Grove .
Thanks for the advice! next time we will give the other location a try.
If you ever come back to Chicago, there are 2 chain staples you missed and one smaller chain that is my personal favorite.
Giordano's and Rosati's are the chains. And not far from Wrigley Field is D'Agastino's (also know simply as D'ag's).
It's nice to hear an unbiased opinion of someone that's not from another major US metropolitan city.
Thank you for your kind words!
As a Chicagoan, Lou’s is absolutely in a tier above all the others. Watching this, I really appreciated how respectful you both were about the food and yet not afraid to be like “this is not for me”. You should give a rating for each!
Thank you for your kind words and feedback! we will definitely think of trying to add some kind of rating
Lous is my all time favourite pizza, I was in Chicago for work for a few years and I miss it so much 😢
It's so good! We loved it! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing your favorite pizza spots! we'll have to check them out next time we are in Chicago.
But did you try the tavern style? Choose a favorite at your peril!!!!😨😨😨😱😱😱
Thank you for the suggestion! I love trying new pizza styles, so the tavern style is next on my list.
Malnati's is a corn meal crust pizza. Pequod's crust is caramelized, not burnt.
Gino's East is the corn meal crust
Corn oil I think. Not meal.
Audio quality and overall production of your guys videos are getting better and better each upload! Keep it up!!!!
The neighborhood where Uno is located was already loud, and they opened a casino across the street in the last year, too.
Thanks for sharing! watch our new Detroit pizza video from Detroit out now!
1000x better than this joke "pizza" style from Chicago.
My favorite American pizza is Detroit Pizza hands down. It's spectacular ❤❤❤ I can't wait to see that video! Neapolitan is my all time favorite and my top choice. 😋🤤
Lou's Cornmeal Crust will always complete your trip to Chicago.
The ingredients need to be layered the in a certain way:
Copious amounts of cheese is always the bottom layer to form a water-tight seal and prevent the crust from getting soggy.
We just recently got Lou Malnati's in Indiana not long ago. Best pizza I have had so far
I’m not from Chicago but I do know that San Marzano tomatoes are usually used in tomato sauces/pizza sauces. That’s likely what you’ll get from Chicago/Ny pizzas
Chicago style pie hits a bit different in the winter when you walk around downtown and the wind chills your soul . Lol
Oh yes, it sounds like it the hearty meal that you need in the winter. 😀
Pequod’s is pronounced “pea-quads”
Glad you enjoyed the pizza!
Thanks for sharing! Looks like we need to head back to try the pub/tavern style
Hey, thanks for the love and for sharing your pizza journey with us! We'll definitely check out Giordano's next time, thanks for the tip!
There is still a Gullivers pizza in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. The son of the Howard Street location runs it there.
@@ursusjynGulliver’s was confounded by Burt Katz, who sold his share and founded Pequod’s. He then sold Pequod’s and opened Burt’s Place.
@scottsoloway
I count myself lucky that I have been able to try deep dish pizza at all of the pizzerias you listed.
@@scottsoloway
Thanks, I can see that.
I live outside Michigan City and when my dad and I go to Chicago for a Cubs or Sox game we always go to Giordano's. We have tried Uno's and Gino's East. Not heard of Lou Malnati's or Vito and Nick's. Also, for a unique pizza check out Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder. They make a pizza pot pie. I've been there a couple times when my sisters have come out to visit.
Thank you for your recommendations! It's awesome to hear about your pizza adventures. we'll definitely check out Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder next time I'm in town. Our New York Pizza video is uploading today!
Good morning y'all. I hope you're well! Ma'am your smile is lovely. Look at you enjoying lovely tomatoes 😀
Yes, we were! thank you
Deep dish is really tourist pizza, special occasion pizza. 99% of the time on any given night, we order tavern style Chicago pizza. Thin crust, crispy, cut in squares. We order deep dish when your cousin from another state to visit.
Good to know!
Northwest Indiana here. the deep dish is great at Uno's, but I like the tavern style in the area. Enjoy New York and Deteoit style... Don't forget New Haven style
Thanks for the pizza recommendations! we'll make sure to try them all out in the future
Lou mahlnati’s is king. I live a 10 hour drive away but it’s so worth the journey.
LOVE THIS VIDEO !!!! thanks guys
Thanks for the Amazing comment, it has made our day! glad you liked it! Thanks for watching,
Love this entertaining channel
This Jersey Guy loves Vito n Nicks !! One time 7 years ago and still dream about it !!
Pee Quads btw
Thanks for the tip! we will have to give that a try in the future.
Lol! thanks for the pronunciation advice.
I have had Chicago style pizza in the Columbus, Ohio area and the restaurant is called Giordano’s. And I have heard that about marmite and Vegemite in Australia. It’s either you like it or you don’t. I really enjoy your videos ❤
I'm glad to see you visit my hometown! I haven't lived there for over 30 years but I Def miss the food! My dad is from St. Louis & they have Imos Pizza ( a thin & crispy pizza that I craved with my youngest daughter- I drove down from Indianapolis just to stock up - I visited family too but I was there for the IMOS!😂) Toasted Ravioli is a must have in St. Louis also
3:38 You keep forgetting the cheese in your list of layers! Is there not enough on that thing?? LOL! (UNO's crust is _really_ good, definitely buttery!)
Deep dish is nice but the Chicago thin is good as well also one of my favorite
I was at that same Lou Malnati's a few days ago, and am already craving more. Luckily I live near Chicago so they're all over the place!
So good! we are so jealous! we will be back in the future though, our new Detroit Pizza video is out now.
For pizza, New Haven CT is King!!!!❤🎉
